Art or Crime ?

bendycat - 2009-08-22 09:53

Don't know what you guys think - i kinda like the way it has been done and would mind doing one my self ( on some thing that won't ruin a classic)

so is it Art or Crime to do this to a box ?

cheers B Wink

If is still working, I'll call it art cause I like it, Kind of reminds me of the breaking movie Nod Yes.

Artist's are thevies anyway! According to U2, from their Actung Baby era.... Smile

I love graff boxes... it adds a flavor of the street. Gives it a place in art history. Ive had two such boxes commissioned by a local writer. Gave one away as a gift, and traded one away to an established member who had to have it.

billy.the.binman - 2009-08-22 13:32

if it was done back in the day rather than by some plum to make it look all 80's then yeah thats safe. but if said 'plum' bought it to paint on then no, it sucks balls. imo

l.lopez - 2009-08-22 15:16

Her is one of my favorites:

bendycat - 2009-08-22 17:02

so billy it can only be on there, if it was done back in the day ! Frown

there are some great artist out there and i think if it's done well then it belongs - but not on a box if the box can be resto'd up to full glory - if the box has had a good life and shows it - then spray away Wink

Well, in a free world, I guess you can do anything you want. To my eyes, that's nothing more than grafitti but no one ever accused me of having an eye for art. I've nothing against the perpetrators, ahem I mean, owners and admire their courage to deface, no, I mean decorate their boomboxes.

2steppa - 2009-08-23 00:23

Never been a fan of graffed up boomers personally, but to each his own Smile

newjackrichie - 2009-08-23 00:32

A buddy of mine is a graf artist. I am going to get him to do a custom job on one of my boxes.

gluecifer - 2009-08-23 06:37

I really love the idea of graff'd up blasters, when done like most of the above it looks super cool. I always wanted to make some custom grills for my 777 that I'd then do some work on, or get some work done on.

Like this absoloute gem.

I think some boxes lend themselves more to being done up than others though, there needs to be a fair amount of real eastate to use without going over meters and such.

I think the Sharp 9494/9696/9090 would work great with the big speaker grills and most of the controls on top.

Always something I keep in mind anyway.

Rock On.

Humm... Criminal art.

ghetto.blaster - 2009-08-23 14:17

hahaha

i like that criminal art.... Smile

madclout - 2009-08-26 17:03

I have to say im torn!
Art yes!
Crime in the sense that these boxes are gems yes!
Some of you who were a part of The HipHop movement in the 80's, clearly must know that the biggest box merited the most clout with the fly girls, bboys and so forth. It wasnt uncommon for
ghetto youth to have a moniker, handle, etc. and it was less uncommon for HipHop practitioners to
lace their boxes with art!
Boom Boxes in early HipHop were the staple whether painted or not. And I can understand that Now a day Boom Box afficionados dont appreciate the art on these sacred ever so forgotten electronics that we highly drool over and collect.
Me personally dont encourage the painting of older models anymore.
Never the less Check out my collection of unpainted boxes and you will feel me.
Thanks for reading.
MadClout!

transamguy1977 - 2009-08-30 19:25

Art yes But on a rare or desirable box???
Maybe a crime
Here is a classic that most may remember

andyboombox - 2009-09-14 04:51

for me its like my cars. they should be left just how the factory intended. none of that poncy, poxy side skirting souped up engines and blue lights crap.
needless to say i accept that many dudes in the 80s did up their boxes with grafitti, different speakers etc, because that was part of boombox culture, and they wanted to personalise their box to their own taste, so it didnt look like everyone elses.
i mean, i look at my boxes now and wouldnt dream of doing any changes to them. the most i do to mine is use 'em and clean 'em- as often as i can Wink
so for me its a crime to mess with a box- but each to your own!!!!
andy

ford93 - 2009-09-14 05:08

If it's done right why not as long as is a box that you don't mind.

I knew lots of graffiti artist back then in New York. I know for sure if they were to do a blow up on a box it would look bad ass!

I say is art and it represents that time! Nod Yes

isolator42 - 2009-09-14 10:09

If it's done well, it's art, IMHO.

Even better if you can just do the grilles like in the pic in Gluecifer's post above.

Even if you don't like it, its several steps above the fate most boomers have - i.e. the dump...

stbnyc - 2009-09-14 20:04

totally ART ..

im.out.of.hear - 2009-09-16 11:38

defo,i`m with fuzzy,i dont mind paint jobs but i would`nt do it to mine no way !
its ok to jazz them but aslong as its reversable,e.g,on the grills coz they can be resprayed back to the way they were, and aslong as it does`nt touch the main unit..but if the box is pretty beat up,suppose tagging and spraying it would cover up the scratches and damage (breath new life into it)..
