Which boxes sound BETTER than you expected?

reli - 2009-12-18 19:13

1) Panasonic RX-F4: For a mini it is very crisp & loud, packs a wallop for its size, the 4" speakers are wound nice & tight for crisp detail. And of course Panasonic's "ambience" setting is awesome and makes techno & pop music sound very spatious & intergalactic.

2) Panasonic RX-5500. After my experience with the somewhat muffled, distant-sounding 5150, I wasn't expecting much. But the 5500 surprised me. VERY accurate sound quality, especially acoustical guitar, vocal, and classical. Sounds like you're actually there. Probably my most "precise" sounding box. Not a bass monster, but very well-balanced across lows mids & highs.

3) Aiwa TPR-950: Good bass at low volumes (with the "loudness" activated and bass dialed all the way up, of course). Good highs as well. Reception is very good, better than Panasonic. Cheap control feel, however.

im.out.of.hear - 2009-12-19 01:54

i'de say Sharp QT77,these are only mini's with tone control but they belt out good bass, they stay rather clearat high volume..

Also..jvc pc5,they are just amaizing,4" bass, thunderous bass, these will blow almost any big box away..if you want a pc5,buy one from uk ebay, they go for nothing..
this sold the other day..dirt cheap,i would have bought it but i already have 3..

well i bought a Panny RX-DT670 cheap and honestly didnt expect a whole lot from it.. but man was i waay off on that.. this box has some serious Kaboom challenging bass! it's bi-amped.. ported cabinets.. 5 band EQ.. i have to say it really impressed me thumptitude wise.. and it gets very loud with no distortion.. it's from 1993.. and the only negative is that it doesnt have an AUX IN.. so i modified a FM transmitter to carry a stronger signal.. and run my MP3 player that way.. works like a charm.. if you ever see one anywhere buy it.. you will not regret it..

themightyrepairer - 2009-12-19 03:45

probably shoud have added that i've owned 6 of the DT680's and 6 various Kabooms.. and the DT670 trumps the DT680 bass and highs wise.. and can ride side by side with the Kaboom.. and due to the tweeter one the DT670 it can do what the Kabooms cant.. hit the high notes.. (not dissin the Kabooms.. they are sweet too)

themightyrepairer - 2009-12-19 03:52

After the weight of opinion on here about Sharp GF-9000's and their mediocre sound for an 8 inch speaker box, I have to say I don't consider the sound QUALITY to be bad at all, quite nice in fact. OK, not a 'heavy hitter' but still sounds good with the right source material, sensible volume settings and careful application of the bass & treble controls.

bogdan - 2009-12-19 07:02

PHILIPS AR774.Did not expect to much from it but when arrived the sound is very good and smooth like having a tube amplifier.

baby.boomer - 2009-12-19 11:19

Can't believe the throbbing bass and crystal clear midrange and highs (not to mention high volume at low levels) from a midsize, generic box (and its aka's). A surprise every time I listen to it!

lil.ange - 2009-12-19 11:54

jvc 550, i didn't think that box would sound as loud as it does, that bad boy is really loud for only having 1 10'' on it.

Only a 10"? That thing is huge, what would make you think it wouldn't be loud...lol Those suckers are loud..Not the best sound, but LOUD.

skippy1969 - 2009-12-20 12:29

I was simply blown away by the sound of my new Sanyo M9982F. When I saw it I thought it was going to sound cheap ,but it sounds brilliant.
Great highs mids and nice bass.

aa.fussy - 2009-12-21 16:46

Sanyo M7024-only has tone control, but sounds very nice.

retro.addict - 2009-12-22 06:14

My Sanyo M9990L surprised me the most. It sounds awesome, has very deep bass and good treble.

blah.blah.blah - 2009-12-22 07:53

the Samsung ST-537. Mine was a mess, a fat midsize box. when i plugged it in it was banging! The stereo matrix just sounds so rich and deep i was blown away.

l.lopez - 2009-12-25 02:02

I was very impress by the sound of the Sansui CP-5 it hits bass hard considering the small speakers it packs, I guest is like they say great things comes in small packages. Nod Yes

superduper - 2009-12-25 02:10

(1) The kaboom. I put it away because it's not pretty to look at but each time I dust it off to put it to use, my amazement is renewed by it's party box prowess.

(2) The RX-5250. At first glance, this appeared to be an RX-5150 with double LED VU level meters instead of a single one. But I couldn't be more wrong! Brilliant Highs, suprisingly strong lows, very good volume and quality feel to it's controls (as opposed to the RX-5150 which had a cheap feel to it). Sound is accurate, tonal controls are responsive.... This is a box that begs the question: what's not to like?

(3) Sony FH series. OH MY GOD! These thing rock so hard it is downright scary! Way exceeded my expectations by far and I'm officially and truly impressed with this line. The best kept secret --- shhh!

(4) Sanyo's line of minis. Mini size. Nothing mini about their features or sound. Very impressive indeed and makes you wonder how something that small can produce sound so big. The first time you hear one, you may be tempted to look around to see where the "real" boombox is hiding.

i do agree with you, i have one of them, is not a loud box, but the sound is very good, nice and perfect base,

the one i was impressed with the sound is the Realistic SCR8, i can say that the sound is almost like the sanyo 9994 hardly any distortion at high volume.

Power wise are the 670 and the 680 rated the same? IS it the larger cabinet size and the dual ports that gives the 670 the edge over the 680? Because I think the 680 hangs with the kaboom too, but I've never heard the 670.

themightyrepairer - 2009-12-28 14:19

well i wanted to be sure before i responded.. i have a pair of DT680 speakers from a dead main unit.. so i hooked them up to the DT670.. and honestly they had bass.. but more a mid bass.. not the deep bass that the DT670 speakers produced.. i also hooked one of the DT670 speakers with DT680 speaker.. and the bass from the DT670 speaker overpowered the DT680 speaker.. like i said i wasnt expecting much from the plain jane look of the DT670.. but it is now my favorite of the platinum series.. (i own a DT707 too) which is sweet in it's own right.. the good news.. DT670's are not in demand.. so you can get one for a song.. bad news.. there aren't that many seen on the Bay.. but you might find one locally.. and like i said.. it's only weakness is the lack of a aux in.. (but works great with a modified Belkin Tunecast 2) you can get those off Ebay for as little as $8.. and the antenna mod can be googled..

themightyrepairer - 2009-12-28 14:25

and to completely answer your question Pana.. the dual ports probably add the the bass.. and the cabinets are about a half inch higher than the DT680's.. they wiegh about the same.. but the DT670 speakers seem beefier even though there the same size as the DT680's.. and the cabinets of the DT670 seem to be a bit more sturdy feeling.. hope this answers your questions..

could you open up one of each speaker and see to be sure that they use exactly the same driver in each or is it possible that the magnet may be larger in the better speaker and could you also post a side by side picture of these from the inside back?

pioneer - 2009-12-29 04:30

Hello there those small mini's not all of them though. man they are way under rated i have a few and these little guy's sure sound like a bigger to mid size box not bassy just some good clean sound ...so yeah those mini's u just dont expect them to sound good.

Just out of curisoty, is it rate at 57W like the dt680? If not, what is it rated at? Thanks.

themightyrepairer - 2010-02-13 03:29

it's rated 52 watts..

A 3-piece Panasonic from the 90's without aux-in? That's ridiculous! What were they thinking?? Confused

I only have a handful, so I haven't many to compare nor do I have much experience, but:

After reading about it I was expecting the new Lasonic MP3 box to sound awful. Besides, it's cheap and it's plastic. For what it is it's actually not half bad and even better after the cabinet mod.
In comparison I have an old GE Blockbuster that blows it away, but for it being something modern I was pleasantly surprised especially for the price.

lav.loo - 2010-07-08 05:26

i was most surprised by the GE blockbuster i got from DRIPTIP, very nice sounding box for a midsized, great highs, mids, and great bass, 10/10 for sound.
another box which surprised me was a panny rx ct900 i recently picked up, i was blown away by the bass it pumped out Nod Yes Wink

It has plastic panels inside that act as a sort of enclosure. The panels need to be removed so the speakers can breath.

A big thanks to MONOLITHIC for pointing this out.

More cabinet ventilation would help too because there's not enough vents on the back of it, but I'm not sure how to add more vents without it looking like a hack job.

retro - 2010-07-08 10:09

I'll have to go with the Panasonic RX C-100. Tight bass, crystal clear highs, and it's really loud.

Hmm, I see what you're saying, but I prefer sealed speakers, because they allow the bass to reflect and magnify inside the enclosure, and it also makes the enclosure act as a resonator, adding to the warmth of it. If you open up a bunch of vents or holes, you might increase the overall volume and spaciousness, but I think the quality will go down.

For proof, consider the Telefunken Studio 1. The woofers are only 4", yet they produce more bass than any other boombox I've ever heard. They are housed in sealed, non-ported enclosures.

mellymelsr - 2010-07-08 15:30

For me it was the Sony FH7 series. I thought I had heard every great sounding, powerful grail and then I go to a friends house and here is this little unassuming, box shape boomer...and then he turned it on and WOW!!!...most impressive box I have heard to date...but the Kaboom ranks a close 2nd with it monstrous bass, every other one piece pales in comparison...

There's nothing wrong with a good sealed speaker if the cabinet design is decent. In this case it's just a thin plastic space that's too small to be effective. It's just a little bit deeper than the magnets so it not resonate at all. That and there's no dampening in it. Most if not all sealed enclosures have gaskets to form and maintain a good airtight seal. That's not the case here. Inside it's just plastic on plastic and the speakers are simply screwed down to the frame, so I have little doubt that it leaks a great deal and isn't really sealed at all.
Instead of sounding nice and tight it's a bit strangled. Think dead room.
