never seen one of those in particular but we used to have similar in the classes at school. they were called 'coombers' i think.

they just played tapes of people speaking french, talking books, etc so the whole class could hear. dance and gym classes would also use them for music and the like. basically a utilitarian ghetto blaster

These (like the Coomber machines)were designed for use in schools, village halls etc. They are usually capable of a really nice and loud sound and are very well made.

I used to have a coomber one of similar appearance which produced a huge volume of sound! Coomber still make tape based machines, by the way, and they are not exactly cheap. . .

Clarke & Smith were another manufacturer of such things, but I don't think they are still in business.

Ahhh, I remember the teacher getting 'the big Coomber cassette player' from the AV room at school!

We used it for Drama and sometimes Assemblies.

Massive black box with a 10 or 12 inch speaker and a cassette deck on the top.

Hey, it has a pitch control! Get another one (or a Sharp GF-9696) and a mixer and you can beatmix cassettes instead of records. Smile
