cant quite believe my luck

andyboombox - 2009-10-07 06:13

what a day! just found my second sharp gf 8585!
at the local british heart foundation, for £8!
its in really good nick- tape works, so does the apld feature- a little cleaning and it could be mint. it is in fact in slightly better condition than my other one but i love them both- so theyre both staying. anyone got a spare grille bolt as this one has one missing.
also this morning, while working at the ymca charity shop, came accross 2 books that the assistant manager let me take. first ones a smash hits special from all the 80s- yes, i know it was originally a girly mag but this book has a couple of nice things in it- including a full page add for a pioneer 3 piece box- (forget the model) and a nice 2 page spread showing buying radio cassette recorders from 1983(with certain pop idols of the time demonstrating them). ill try and scan them to the site as soon as i can.
also at the carboot picked up a nice pair of huge 70s headphones and an old philips radio from the 70s.
all in all, was worth getting up at 6.00.

great news!!! I can't seem to get anything from our charity shops as they don't sell eletrical stuff!!Most of mine i get from the dump!!!

Sounds like an incredible deal for 8 quid.

And I love old Smash Hits magazines, I've got the (1987) annual somewhere too.

hey saxonman,
unless you live in a small village, your nearest town should have a british heart foundation furniture shop. they are typically bigger in size than the ordinary stores, but they also sell electrical goods too, as they have technicians that test everything before it goes on sale. i love getting my boxes from here because you know that everything works on them, or they cant sell them. the gf8585 i got yesterday fully works as i said, unlike the other one which has deck problems. needless to say boxes dont turn up there frequently, and you have to be a little patient. however in 4 months ive been collecting ive had off bhf:
hitachi trk 3d8e £10
sharp gf9090 £7.50
sharp gf8585 £8.00.
granted that was off both the pontefract and barnsley stores though. the average price i guess from them is between £7 and £15- although ive not seen any at the latter price but that is what i was originall y quoted by the stores.
2 steppa, yes - amazing for 8 quid. and what a find the smash hits book, for free! when i work out how to scan the pages ill do it for you.

Sorry, is that a great deal?

bendycat - 2009-10-08 08:59

Confused

Confused

ao - 2009-10-09 07:29

Didn't mean that to sound quite so pissy, sorry.

I just never thought the 8585 was that great. If you really need a nice medium sized Sharp with twin VUs, treb, bass, 8cm woofers etc then why not stretch to a £40 9090 or a 9191, the poor 8585 just seemed a bit 'watered down' with drivers smaller than the speaker grills, never a good sign.

However, this is just my opinion. If I saw a 8585 at a charidy shop for £8, i'd probably pass on it. Some obviously wouldn't, that's cool.

andyboombox - 2009-10-10 04:55

i know what you mean about the 9090 agent- got one of those too- does sound excellent. but i still rate highly the 8585!
