New JVC Kaboom RV-NB50/51/52...

isolator42 - 2009-10-13 10:18

Ok, so let's all pick to pieces the new JVC Kaboom (if this has already happened elsewhere on s2g, please somebody guide this old fool in the right direction - thanks Smile)

Well... I'm liking the better iPod integration & the fact that JVC haven't yet abandoned CDs (heck, they only recently removed the tape deck).
Also like the new colours. Disaster Area sun-ship Stealth black for me please.

Still a shame that there's no tweeters & the spec saying it's now 40W (5W x 2 plus 15W x 2), as opposed to the previous 52W might be a concern (or it could simply be a different or more honest measurement).

Anyone seen one actually for sale anywhere yet?

71spud - 2009-10-13 10:53

I don't know... the power rating is at 10% THD. That is hardly more realistic. Music is unlistenable at that level... at least for me. Take it down to 1% and now you have something usable.

It is missing more power, larger drivers and totally missing tweeters. They are still missing the mark for me, but for the cr*p most kids are listening to these days it probably fits it perfectly.

alvinm - 2009-10-13 11:03

I'll get one.... Smile

themightyrepairer - 2009-10-13 12:36

wow.. finally you U.K. folks get lucky.. it's only available there by the looks of it.. i hope they bring it state side.. here's a link for price.. boomblaster 13cm subs.. 5 inchers by the looks of it.. would love to see a review on this puppy..

themightyrepairer - 2009-10-13 12:38

ahh just seen available Nov 1st. well there may be luck for us Americans after all..

themightyrepairer - 2009-10-13 12:47

the more i look at it the more you gotta love JVC.. i like the new ports in the lower front.. it has the typical solid design of past Kabooms.. i bet it kicks.. good huntin btw Isolator.. gettin all excited now.. please let it come state side!

alvinm - 2009-10-13 16:55

Does that come out to $475?..... Eek

jerryjg - 2009-10-13 17:39

Is the previous Kaboom better soundwise?
Is it still also a guitar amp?

bendycat - 2009-10-13 17:52

jvc's new cash cow Laugh Out Loud

black at the back looks best - but they have a look of G.I.Joe / action man plastic toy Frown

isolator42 - 2009-10-17 04:38

thanks for the info guys.
Good spot on the forward-firing ports.

I paid only just over half as much for my RV-NB10, I think £300 is too much for this machine. Still want one though... Smile

obtuse - 2009-11-07 13:46

As long as the amplification/speakers are the same as the old model, they probably have a winner. Sure hope they improved the tuner section though.

I'll stick with my trusty RV-B99BK. I do like the iPod integration (though mine works just fine using the aux input), but I also like having a cassette player (now that it's working again).

At the very least this may mean lower used prices on the older models.

im.out.of.hear - 2009-11-07 14:15

iso,my mate bought a RB V20? I think thats the model, its the one that can play mp3,grey and silver,he paid £40 for it off his friend,he bought it to re-sell but soon as he heard the sound of it he soon changed his mind,he wont part with it for anything..he did'nt get a remote with it but he bought one from the jvc website..

themightyrepairer - 2009-11-07 16:14

hmm this was supposed to be available Nov 1st.. but still listed as not available.. hope it's still commin out..

retro.addict - 2009-11-08 08:31

I think it's ugly. The nicest looking Kaboom, in my opinion, is this one...

RV-NB10

alvinm - 2009-11-08 11:16

They look pretty much the same.... Confused Little changes here and there.

isolator42 - 2009-11-08 16:30

Good to hear that R-A.

I may be selling my RV-NB10 (Christmas to pay for Frown)
...very good/mint condition, remote, strap (plus spare strap), instructions, original box & packing.
I wonder what I might get for it?

im.out.of.hear - 2009-11-08 16:36

I'de get that kaboom straight on ebay iso, kaboom fans will be all over that like stink..

isolator42 - 2009-11-10 06:07

GM, you could be right...

drew - 2009-11-10 18:08

Why is the distortion rated at 10% THD, thats worse then many mid range bbx's from the 1970's. Better units from the 1980's are often at 2% to 5%.

I don't know what this JVC costs, but it should have have a high fidelity audio stage if it wants to be rated as a quality bbx.

$400.00 w/out box is best that I have seen for this model ... oh wait, you are SELLING yours... oh!

isolator42 - 2009-11-11 04:08

10% THD seems to be quite a common output power rating for boomboxes. Yes, at 10% harmonic distortion things would sound pretty apalling, but at least it's a standard we can compare with, unlike those stupid PMPO figures.

Currently trying to wiggle out of having to sell the Kaboom.
...unless any of you lot are interested? Smile

gld - 2009-11-11 09:35

I heard a Kaboom for the first time two months ago. I was glad to hear it given all the comments about it but I must say I had mixed feelings about its sound. It definately needs a tweeter and a little more power for mids and tops.

Sounds very nice, Paul. You may get around £100 for it, I paid £50 for my green RV-B90, which came with strap and remote, but without the instructions and box.

you've got to hear the Panasonic RX-DT680 I personally think it gives the Kaboom a run for its money. Even in the bass department

isolator42 - 2009-11-17 05:16

I've got an RX-DT610 which is a few down the range from the 680 & it still sounds better than most of my other boomers. So much so that it's the "kitchen radio", with an iPod dock added & also connected to the TV digibox... Smile

not familiar with this slang - ( trop cher ) - what does this mean ?

reli - 2009-11-25 18:08

It means it's a ripoff.

How is it worth $400, when I could buy a halfway decent home theatre system or DSLR camera for that price?

Seriously, electronics are cheap nowadays.....That thing should only cost $200-225 max. Hell, I bet the manufacturing cost from China is only about $100.

themightyrepairer - 2009-11-26 14:52

well the news was lackluster for a few weeks.. but now it's all over the web.. it will be released in Japan the end of december.. lookin good now! so i assume the U.S. will follow close behind.. i have an ipod touch 3G and listen to internet radio through it.. Last.FM/Pandora so this will be the ultimate portable for me.. and the bass... the awesome bass it will produce.. price doesnt mean nada to me.. this will be my main boombox when it is finally released state side.. hehe i have never been this excited for a Kaboom.. go JVC!!!

ste - 2009-11-29 12:47

Will the NB50 have DAB radio ? or is it just FM

themightyrepairer - 2009-12-02 14:09

well the news is getting better.. they registered the product with Energy Star soo it's looking real good! man come out already!
