My new Altec Lansing Imix IMT800 boombox.

skippy1969 - 2009-10-26 14:27

Well a few of you guys were wondering about this unit,so here is a little review of the Altec Lansing IMT800 boombox that I got today and all I can say is WOW!!!
I'm totally happy with it.
It can well packaged today through U.P.S. factory direct from Altec Lansing.
It is smaller than I though it would be. It is about the same width as a JVC RC M70,but shorter in height and about twice as thick. It is light and easy to carry and handle.,especially with it's top mounted carry handle and the twin carry handle/speaker protectors on the front.
The remote is very cool and works very well and controls almost all the function including the EQ settings.
Speaking of EQ setting it has quite a few.
It has,
1. seperate bass and treble settings.
2. Preset EQ settings Rock,Pop,Hip Hop,and Altec factory default set.
3. Seven band EQ with 60hz,160hz,400hz,1000HZ, 2500HZ, 6300HZ and 16,300HZ settings.
The Ipod dock will charge the Ipod while it is in the dock and while the main unit is plugged into the wall even when switched off. But the Ipod will not charge while the unit is being operated on batteries,no biggie there.
Then there are two inputs that you can plug in two other Ipods or MP3 players or anything else you want to play through it.
The unit has great sounding speakers.
Two clear sounding tweeters,
Two clean Midranges with heavy speaker grills with a no scratch rubbery type of coating on them.
And one subwoofer with a matching bass radiator.
It is supposed to run up to 30 hours on 8 D cell batteries. The display and lighted buttons work while running on batteries, which is very cool to me.
Th FM radio works great. A very good digital tuner with 4 presets. It also has a nice heavy duty retractable antenna.
Sound quality.
Overall I think it sounds great.
I was surprised at how loud and clear it can get.
The bass is quite good, very clear and clean.
I would venture to say it is not quite as bassy as a Kaboom. But it is very very strong and clean.
The build quality is second to none, very well constructed and the switches have a nice feel to them.
There is a cool sliding aluminum guard with a rubber bumper that touches the Ipod to keep your Ipod from falling out.
What do you guys think? Big Grin or Roll Eyes

Skip, that box is totally awsom man, love the look of it..just looks pure quality, and i love the display, does it have dab radio ?? i think in time everyone will end up with one, like the kaboom..

skippy1969 - 2009-10-26 16:08

Thanks Gman! No it doesn't have dab radio, just FM. Wink

I love it too. How much and where do you lift it? I have an original Apple portable Ipod boombox and was thinking of putting it on ebay and upgrading. Post a pic of the handle up? Nice.

skippy1969 - 2009-10-26 20:11

Thanks Ash. Actually the handle in the top doesn't move. It is just an aluminum strip with a rubber grip. It is heavy duty though. Wink

Great mini review! It's nice to see a company pushing out the boat with a new fresh design for a boombox. It sounds like this could be the Kaboom of the future, going from your review.

Does anyone have audio specs on the Altec or the JVC.......like number of IF stages for the AM & FM, use of filters, and harmonic distortion of the audio output, etc.

I would think that both would have fairly high fidelity specs. since they are pricy units

boomboxnut - 2009-12-12 07:24

WOW, skippy! That's a cool looking box from Altec Lansing. Cool
