Aiwa CS 880

ash25 - 2009-11-28 06:51

I spoke Friday evening with Driptip as I usually do once or twice a month, and he was asking me if I saw the Aiwa CS880 that ended on November 4th. I told him no and he gave me the ebay item number and it was the rare silver model. I wanted to know if anyone here bought this and was it posted here on the forum in the for sale section. It only went for 155.00. I cant believe I NEVER saw this on Ebay as I am constntly checking for newly listed boomboxes. Bummed out as I surely would have tried to win this.

Ash. I won this and price was good but this was an exceptionally rough one. I've got it apart right now, all over the place. It needs all the belts, it needs a thorough interior cleaning, it has "custom" wires all over the place (if you know what I mean), the grill needs removal to straighten and remove dents (which is truly a huge undertaking) the outer speakers are foam rotted, the passive radiator is missing, the antennas corroded (but cleanable), the handle chrome is not salvageable (lots of rust and pitting) and will need to be stripped, then maybe painted. Finally it suffered some shiping related damage. All in all, a good buy but the purchase price belies the the actual and final completed cost.

Hey Normin. Congrats I guess. Didnt look that bad on Ebay but pics lie sometimes.

Hey Norm every Aiwa I have ever opened had the sloppiest wiring ever, like spaghetti in a windstorm. Is this just how they wired Aiwa's or are these just tinkered with more than others?

Sloppy and spaghetti for sure. But this one has been tinkered with. Some locations clearly were resoldered, and I think it was resoldered with acid core flux (the kind used in soldering plumbing fixtures). The wires already corroded off the pads on some spots. Also, I say rewired because it wouldn't make sense to have 12 guage wire on the positive post but 22 guage wire on the negative post, right? Somehow, I don't think that would be factory from Aiwa.

i wonder though as my 660 has some fairly odd wiring choices as well. maybe we had the same electrician Laugh Out Loud

Yeah. The same unlicensed, uncertified electrician.
