Sharp boombox found in local clothes shop

retro.addict - 2009-12-08 11:57

I walked into a local clothing shop today and heard the shop music playing from a speaker just above my head. Wondering if it could be a nice '80s speaker, I looked up through the strange mest thing that the lights were in, and I could see the speaker on it's side, it was placed on the mesh. It was a silver detatchable speaker from an early '80s boombox, with chrome woofer trim and tweeter covering. I looked close and saw the Sharp lettering on it. I walked further into the shop and found the other speaker resting on the mesh at the back of the store. I approached the shop owner about them, and asked "They're from a portable system, right?" To which he replied "Yeah." I asked if I could maybe see the main section and he said "No, it's upstairs." I asked him if I could maybe buy the stereo off him or bring a replacement, but he wasn't at all keen on the idea. It was probably all the speaker wiring from upstairs to downstairs that he didn't want to disturb. He also said "We've had it for years." I'm really interested in the box, and I had recognised the design of the speaker cabinet. It's from the really rare GF-990, the one with the keyboard. Here's a pic, sorry for stealing it Gettoman.

It had the really tall tweeter coverings just like the speakers above. The only thing is, the grilles were different, they looked like dark grey plastic grilles and I couldn't see the woofers behind them. Are there any other Sharp 3-piece boxes with speaker enclosures like this?

My gf-700 looks the same as or close to a 900 but no music processor.

If he doesn't want to disturb the wiring just offer to take the speakers and main unit, leave the wiring in situ and organise your own replacement wire when you get the unit home.. Even do a 'one 4 one' swap with another 3 piecer.

you must get it,retro-dont miss out!
i once had a similar experience in a charity store with a little sharp qt77 in red- was in the shop playing their music and i wasnt allowed to buy it.i think i remember offering a tenner or something for it-they still refused.went back a few weeks later to go at them again and it had gone-and despite them having my mobile number in case they ever do wish to sell me it!they told me it had gone to a regional office for disposal!!!!!"unbelievable" i told them.so never count your chickens with shop-owned stereos-but keep trying,man-at least while its still in the store!if it is a 990 its too good to lose out on!
good luck, my son.

I don't think he would be too bothered about the wiring on the boombox (which I'd be taking of course), it's the wiring in the shop. He's probably thinking about the fuss and disturbance when the shop's open to customers. I suggested bringing another stereo as a replacement but he still didn't seem keen. I really want this GF-990, IF it is a GF-990. I walked past the shop again today and tried to look at the speaker again, but it's in a position where you really have to be in the store to see it when you look up. I didn't realise but the owner I was talking to yesterday was walking towards the store as I was looking in, I assume he was coming back from his break. He obviously saw me looking in and smiled at me.

Hopefully if he sees me taking enough interest, he'll realise I'm serious and might consider selling it to me...
