Sharp WF-939 - Slow Tape Decks - Help ?

kidofthe1980s - 2009-12-16 08:57

Hello All

Recently got myself a Sharp WF-939 !

The sound is amazing, full dyanmic range, minimal distortion - even when volume is push up...in the process of cleaning her up...but need some help when it comes to the tape decks.

Both tape decks run fine, however both decks run slightly too slow for my liking. I've taken her apart briefly and taken a look at the motors and belts and they all seem in order...any ideas / guide of bringing them back to the right speed, would be much appreciated ?

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks, kidofthe1980s

sounds like it could be something more than just belts if they are both the same!!but you could try changing the belts just to rule it out!!! cheap repair first!! That's what I'd do anyhow!!

Have a look on the motor,if there is a small hole/opening with a rubber cover inside then you can adjust the speed of the motor with a precision screwdriver.Be careful though,a tiny adjustment is all you need.

Did you get this from china ? these are megga rare in uk..
most sharp double cassette radios have some adjustable Vr's on the board, there's usually 4,1 each for each deck speed, and 2 more for high speed dubbing speed, just be careful you dont mess up all the speed controls for the decks though,..i really like these radios, they are a monster, just too damm hard to get hold of,tooo rare in uk..

Hello All....thanks for all your advice...you wouldn't have an images or diagrams of where I should be looking, what they look like, to adjust the speed of the decks on the WF-939?
Thanks again, Kidofthe1980s

well this is not the correct radio ...
but this is what you are gonna be looking for once you get inside of your's and look for this
lil motor-cassette and the
little 'black' hole there is where you stick a lil Jeweler's [ spade or flat tip screwdriver ] into ...
hope this picture helps in giving you an idea as to what to look for inside of yours...
you wont be rotating this much not more than 1 or half of a turn - if that much to adjust, OK?

Cassettekid is correct this is where you need to adjust the tape speed. The best way is with a 3khz tone recorded on a tape and use a frequency counter program(just Google for it) on your pc to monitor as you tweak the motor preset. Turn the preset screw very slightly, certainly less than quarter turn.

Hope this helps

Cassettekid..thanks for the image and advice...will be taking the WF-939 apart this weekend to locate these little black holes on the back of the drive motors..will take some pictures and let you all know.

In the mean time 'gettoman', where are these adjustable Vr's, any images and pictures of what these look like...

Thanks, Kidofthe1980s

[vr]- do you mean like a variable resistor if so where on the [board] = pcb = printed circuit board ???

Just how far away are these from the wires to the motor since I Dont have the Schematic for these ... ?

To get a proper speed you need to make
a 60Hz or 50Hz test tape with a good tape deck.
Than use two resistors and a LED
as a speed indicator.
Connect the Led to one speaker, the resistor to
the 12 VAC of the power transformer.
LED will flash slower as you get to the right speed.

Probably going over your head with this one.

If you need a 60Hz test tape I could get one to you.

Gosh darn, I need a diagram of this procedure?

Connect to 12 volt AC side of transformer
not the 12 volt DC, not the 120 volt main.

Play test tape and turn up volume a bit
to see the led start flashing.

I got the same sharp wf-939 mate

Awesome sound ain't it, had the ipod playing on mine tonights

I also have the tape decks running a little slow, they seem to have improved since using it. not sure if it's a single motor yet, as I ain't took it apart, alot of later stuff was, else I doubt the motors would be out on both.

Shame Xmas getting in the way else i'd get a look at mine this week and let ya know what I find

kidofthe1980s - 2009-12-22 04:31

Thanks bods....the sound is indeed amazing, plus the additional spectrum analyzer...such a amazing looking box...even Mrs Kidofthe1980s likes it !

Didn't get round to opening her up yet, what with Christmas activities around the house...hopefully after Christmas will have some proper boombox time...to sort this issue out. Play with decks last night and they are still slow for my liking...also have a feeling, their isn't one of these 'little black holes' on the back of the motors to control the speed...will take pictures when I have crack her open !
Cheers, kidofthe1980s
