dreaming....

andyboombox - 2010-01-25 05:03

yo guys and babes
well, my grandparents house has sold, and i will be richer soon to the tune of £7000.
after taking my 5 year old to disneyland paris, giving my girlfriend a grand for Ellies future and myself a lap top and camera, im looking to spend about £500 on a decent box.
has to be 1 piece
has to be famous for fabulous sound and fantastic looks/must have vu needles
preferably in uk but may look further if shipping okay
what do you guys recommend?
could i get an m70 etc for that?

2steppa - 2010-01-25 05:15

You could get a very very nice M70 for that.

Or a nice Sharp Gf-777

Or Sanyo 920

Just don't let that 500 burn a hole in your pocket, ask advice here before pulling the trigger if in doubt, despite the temptation of 'all that glitters' - you'll be gutted if you waste 500 quid on a junker. No No

andyboombox - 2010-01-25 05:50

cheers 2-s.i know, ive fancied an m70 for a while.but ive also hankered after a big sanyo.
but what id want (what id really really want)believe it or not is an aiwa tpr 950.
i just love the look of that baby.

2steppa - 2010-01-25 10:20

The TPR950 is an incredible box. I heard one of a members on here when I visited and it's like the boombox equivalent of the tardis - small from the outside but what a BIG sound and gorgeous clarity. And looks sweet too. Smile

bogdan - 2010-01-25 10:41

I AgreeBut you can consider a m90 too.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-01-25 11:28

i just got a Tpr950..needs work though eg ariels..got to agree, for its small size, its a heavy box,the sound is great, loud and clear, got good bass, looks nice and feels solid,i like it alot..

saxonman - 2010-01-25 12:22

well I'm a sharp man myself but go for the one you REALLY want!! if it's a big sanyo thats the one you should get!!!go for it and don't go for anything not top shape if you're got the money!! I did think of buying a doer upper 777 before i bought the 767 but the cost of doing it up wasn't worth the bother!! and even tho i bought the lesser sharp in the end I got a fully working and in tip top condition box!!good luck on your hunt

The TPR-950 is a great box, it has one of the most effective "Loudness" switches to increase bass & treble at low volume. When you crank the volume it is no louder than other boxes of its size, but when it's left on low volume it has more depth than any of them.

Also the "Wide" setting is just as good as Panasonic's Ambiance.

I wish the top metal trim was gray or black, though........Not greenish-teal. Leaving

200 bucks... Eek whats my TPR-990 worth then?

geoffhartwell - 2010-01-26 11:31

be patient andy, you can get some real bargains on ebay, i got a 777 for £100 a m70 for £100 a sanyo 920 for £90 a aiwa 990 for £65 and an aiwa 955 for £50. all in realy good condition, but most of them did need new bets, if you can change belts it worth going for non working deck, you can save a fortune,

drmz - 2010-01-26 11:42

Wow, I didn´t know, that these aiwas sell that high in the US. I paid less than 50 Euros for a TPR-955.
However I think they are great boomboxes but not as good as a M70. I would compare it with a Panasonic 5500 in build quality and sound.

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-26 14:10

and let's not forget a couple of pounds for nice simple camera ("innit?" Big Grin) , my friend, we really need pictures of all your cool stuff :].

The 5500 has better build quality when it comes to control feel, especially the tape deck controls.
The TPR has better reception, however the 5500 provides smoother transitions between stations.
The 5500 has Dolby, the TPR doesn't.
The TPR has loudness and stereo wide settings, the 5500 doesn't.
The 5500 has soft eject, the TPR doesn't.
In terms of sound, however.... They're about equal.

still we'll see, and seen as though now im beginning at the bhf as an electrics sorter/tester,i might even find one for a tenner!!!!!!!!!!!!

drmz - 2010-01-27 04:19

You should check german ebay! Shipping is not much to GB and no customs inside EU. And I see TPR´s there sometimes.

brigadier.vytas - 2010-01-27 05:20

TPR 950A is my first but for me it's simply the best sounding and looking box. Maybe only metallic CS- 80 looks more pretty

also, i wish i had one day their little sis TPR 840 :]

If I were in your shoes, I'd set my heart on an M90 & bide my time...
It's what I did (not the money part, of course), & I've never regretted it.

...hmm, I must get it out again for another airing Smile

andyboombox - 2010-02-01 08:09
