Sony CFD-5: if it isn't on yr wish-list, it should be...

isolator42 - 2010-02-09 05:59

Damn, this boomer is quality.
The build is from the era that built Sony's reputation as one of the very best (IMHO, that reputation is currently being seriously undermined by some of their stuff from recent years, which is clearly re-badged gear).

Anyway, back to the CFD-5.
This one fulfills the thing in life that always makes me happy: it's better than it needed to be. That is, Sony went that bit further, making this boomer special.
The tape deck is the sort of thing you'd normally find in an decent Sony home setup from the 80s: rock solid pitch, full servo, flippy-head auto-reverse, music search, Dubbly, metal & even stuff like CD synchro & rec/play timer (did anyone ever use that?).
The CD is a lovely example of the 1st generation: big, squary shiny buttons & "DIGITAL" plastered all over the place. It manages time & track info on the LCD display at a time when many settled for 2 digit LEDs showing track number only.
The tuner isn't digital but partly makes up for this by having a tuning light as well as an FM stereo light & an FM mono option.
The (detatchable) speakers have real (non piezo) tweeters & those oh-so 80s cool square APM woofers. Also there's a forward firing bass reflex port across the bottom. Wonderful.
A five band EQ on a boomer this old? Excellent.
Proper Aux/Line-in on a boomer with a CD player is unusual & (decades after it was made) extremely useful.
If I had to pick holes, I'd whinge a bit about the twin-slider volume control, but that's just me...

Everyone who's seen it at work has said the same thing: ooh, that looks expensive.
Nuff said:

btw, I got mine from s2g member jeff, who I've been nice about here Smile

It also has the honor of being the first CD boombox on the market. I'm a fan of the 1973-83 Sony's - but I'm progressing to these units...they're nice ! Amazing...the CFD-5 is now 25 years old.

i never noticed these things had full-logic tape decks.

i've always wanted one of these. early CD players are fascinating to me.

That sure is a professional looking boomer. Nice catch isolator! Cool

On the 5 band equalizer, the huge Panasonic RX-5350 from about 1982 had one. Smile
