AIWA CA-20 - the flagship of the 80's

hifitom - 2010-02-22 02:29

Hello

After a long search I found the Aiwa CA-20. I wanted this unit because I think it's something for my Hifi-Ghettoblaster collection (the broshure says that it got a sound like a home hifi unit ... hmmm, let's see).

It got a lot of goodies on board - 2 servo tapes with a freely programmable music search system (with 10 extra buttons), DSL with a 3D passiv radiator in the box, 2 x 12 watts, 10 kg heavy ... only problem, I got to wait a hole week (!!! ... ahhhhh, I can't stand this ...!!!) till I could do the first soundcheck.

My question:
Who got this unit at S2G, and how is the sound quality???

Thanks for your help -
best wishes
TOM

Tom,I had a CA-W20 once apon a time. I would say it sounds pretty nice, but not what I would call "HI FI".

agree with skippy--
dont expect hi-fi
but you might really enjoy the sound

Hmmm, that sound not realy good ... thanks my friends! I gone let you know what I think about it after the first soundcheck ...

I already had a few Aiwa's, but never find one which surprised me with a smooth, rich and fat sound ...

I love the tweeters on that model. Very creative styling.

However I heard that the 3D membrane often needs re-foaming.

That's right

I had a other model (just one tape and no freely programmable music search system - can't remember the typ) that also has this 3D system. They 3D passiv radiator was no more there (it lieing loose inside) and there was just a empty space.

The 2-way-speakers has holes on the side, a kind a bass-reflection system that blows the wind inside the bbox (just work when the speakers are on the bbox!) to the passiv radiator. Not shure how/if this should realy work ... hope the passiv radiator on my new bbox is ok, so I can tell you about it ...

Best wishes
