The AIWA CA-20 arrived - soundcheck !

hifitom - 2010-02-24 04:57

Hello

15 min. ago the postman brought my new Aiwa, the top bbox CA-20, which is running at the moment in the backround.

Firt soundcheck: I love it!!!

This unit got a great sound, very nice bass (overall, from deep- till kick-bass) and a great stage. The tuner is also very nice, sounds powerful and very clear. I already owned a few big Aiwa units, but this thing is the best of Awia - this for shure! If the JVC PC-5 sounds (should be arrive in the next days) that great I'm very happy.

Also: this thing got a great production quality! It's small (thought it would be much bigger), the knops at the tape are more like from a home hifi unit. Servo driven, very smooth ... exactly the way I love it. And the look! Look at the bass speakers! What a babe ...

If you guys get the chance to get one of these units, don't wait and go for it. It's now in my personal 10 list - never thought a Awia would reach this ...

Best wishes

Just wondering about the bass speakers - in the broshure they are colored white, with a much smaller dust cap.

The speakers looks original - any infos about this???

Thanks and best wishes

Tom,I would say the speakers in your are not original.
The CA-W20 I had had the original Aiwa white woofers. I had mine refoamed.

hifitom - 2010-02-24 07:51

Hey skippy1969

I want to clear things ... so I opened the speakers, and you are right. These are not the original woofers, they are JVC's. Just wondering that they realy fit perfect - if they where not badged as JVC I would say they are original.

I don't know where these are original fitted, but they are sooo good. Great deep bass + all over + had punsh. It showes the potencial of this unit, and also showes that the original bass-speakers sucks!

Now I know why this thing sounds so sweet!!! I'm not for "tuning" a bbox, but as I told you I already had a few big Aiwas, but their problem was that the bass was much to flat. No deeps as all, but what these JVC's doing with this bbox is unbelievable! + they look so much better than the originals ...

This Aiwa is realy the first unit where I don't care if everything is original, specialy when it got such a great sound!

Look at the woofer's screws, they are not int the original holes. What is the wooden stick at the back panel doing? Just a support? Glad you like the sound, it must be quite good!

redbenjoe - 2010-02-24 09:57

glad you like it, tom

so , expect to like your pc5 -
at least, that much.

hifitom - 2010-02-24 10:30

Shure, the screw holes are not original - that's right. But the frame at the front fits perfect at the rubber.

I was also wondering what that wooden stick will do at back panel. But it fit's also perfect on the magnet of the woofer, makes the front and backpanel of the speaker (plastic) more stable, nothings shakes on the speakers - even at higher volume.

I think the guy which did the work on the speakers knew what he did. They sound perfect - very nice.

I'm shure you would love this sound also. Perfect speaker tuning - wow!

This is a very pleasant looking box.

I think us boombox lovers need to be forgiving of these boxes. They weren't designed for moderm music programmes; with extreme highs, sub-bass or high compression. Most music was of a frequency that naturally came from the instruments being played. Now, these extreme frequencies are synthesized. I think this is why speaker replacements are so successful.

I remember boomboxes back in the day sounding just awesome and I think this is because they where designed for the music being played at the time.

Looks like the previous owner did an impressive job.

hifitom - 2010-02-24 12:03

I don't think so.

Boomboxes from the beginning where designed and made for young people. If you listen to old disco music from the 70' or breakdance music from the 90's, there where always hard beats (the best sub-bass comes from some 60's music, my opinion). Propably that was the success from the Telefunken hifi studio, the sound spectrum.

The speakers of the JVC are new. Produced in 20th - these days they got more technolgy and materials to produce a real sound. To produce such a speaker back in 1984 (CA-20) would be much to expensive or mybe not possible ...

Did you open it up to check the 3D membrane?

muto - 2010-02-24 12:19

Can i have one,please! Smile

Woofers looks to be a good quality ones.

I'll bet that stick transfers some of the bass waves to the rear, making the particle board panel on the rear vibrate and act like part of the speaker. Some super subwoofers, especially for home theater actually use the floorboards to produce the low waves. There are even some wall mounted speakers that mounte behind the sheetrock making the entire wall act like a large speaker. In other words, transfering some of the bass waves to the rear may make the speaker perform as if it were a larger speaker.

Congratulations Tom and I agree with Norm...

There is some modification here to get the Aiwa to perform beyond original design.

And to a point, you are correct regarding music, however, if you listen to an original analog recording with no equalization from say 87-88 back before the TR-808's were pushed super hard and extended low frequencies built into tracks in greater numbers, boomboxes did just fine.

I did a review of the Panasonic RX-C100 and noted that you could get it to distort, but not just at low frequencies but highs as well.

You have a unique box that can do some good things and as long as your happy, modified or not, that's what counts. Smile

Hi Tom,
You can find out where parts came from by going to PartStore.com
Type in the part number and click on "See all models that work with this part"

From your pictures they are VGS1201-008 speakers.
These speakers go in the JVC UX-A4 Mini Stereo System.
