Whats your fave tune to play on your box ?

im.out.of.hear - 2010-03-03 12:23

i've been playin some tunes on my sharp 575,i've found that it cant take the modern stuff, the led vu meter, all light up and barely flash at all,so i tried some old skool funk/soul from the 80s,and it handled it really well, alot less modulation and clearer sound..
check out some of these..if you can download them and try them out on your box, you'll find the sound more pleasing..

Cool selections - I think I've got all these 12" vinyl singles. (A lot) of modern stuff is mastered very loud almost to the point of digital clipping and then compressed to make it seem even louder - horrible.

The old 80s clean crisp dynamic productions lend themselves well to blasters I find.

mellymelsr - 2010-03-03 12:43

...Burn Rubber by the Gap Band or any tune from Parliament or Cameo...something about the funk sounds good on a box...

I would agress totally. Too much processing in modern music. Even more on the radio.

If you look up music compression on the web I think there is a group that is lobbying to stop compression in music. They say that because the signal is not very transient it is very annoying to listen to (I agree). Also, it has a similar effect of putting DC current through your speakers.

I agree with mellymelsr; 80's music on an 80's boombox can't be beaten Nod Yes

YES! I Agree "Funk Funk" by Cameo and "Cosmic Slop" by Funkadelic are tunes I use to test new boxes when they come in. Cameo from that period usually has nice, lean bass and drum tracks, while Funkadelic has guitar and bass (Bootsy!) that will put any box through it's paces.

I Agree
+ Commodores
+ Earth wind & fire .......

andyboombox - 2010-03-04 02:06

i cant stand anything modern anyway-music wise, cos gettomans right- it plays havoc with those led meters.put something on from the 80s-like my nik kershaw tape,or tears to fears and the like, and were away!i dont have the added bonus of owning any disco tapes yet-when it comes to hunting for em you have to sift the trash from the treasure.oh, and ive also got squeeze, madonna, beatles, eagles, etc etc all on tape.ill either get my 8989 or 525 going for my tapes.

gld - 2010-03-04 02:37

That's a nice selection ghettoman. I prefer the original to 'Happy' by Hi Tension - British Soul band. Nod Yes

'I'll be Good' is another total classic but 'Attack me With Your Love' by Cameo really gets me every time. Sounds brilliant on the boombox. Those old funk bands really new how to play with sound.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-03-04 05:18

Yeah All your links are awsom guys,serious..its good to here different old skool stuff, and i also learnt another thing,i was'nt aware of this compression of music,i just thought its all recorded at a high modulation,i have no idea why they do it because even my kenwood 6 piece hi fi struggles and over modulates sometimes, and the spectrum analyzer bars all light up and barely bounce,,its really stupid why its like this..people that produce the music, they must be aware of that..

Wow Blaster,Two sisters takes me right back, not hurd that for years and years,i had the Two sisters album in about 84'
Playin these old tunes have kinda made me apreciate the sound of my boxes again, for years i've been playin modern stuff and my boxes have been sounding awfull, thats why they've been abandoned in my spare room, but hopefully when summer breaks through this cold,i might take them out and give them some fresh air Smile
And carry on with any sugestions as to what to listen to..any links..

black sunday cool!!

2steppa - 2010-03-04 09:54

80s soul & funk is just awesome for blasters, it's what I always played and enjoyed on mine and back in 84 is when I started collecting those types of tunes on 12".

Paul Hardcastle/First Light/Direct Drive always winners Cool

Plus tunes by Kashif, Melba Moore, D-Train, Cameo, The System, George Benson, Kleeer, I could rattle on for hours and come out with all kinds of obscure but incredible funk tunes Big Grin

Parliament, Funkadelic, most big late 70s and early 80s Funk.....

And every now and again some Heavy Metal from the mid to later 80s.

But funk/soul would be the main type of tunes for my Boomers!!!!!

muto - 2010-03-04 13:51

Anything from this netradio http://www.kohina.com/

andyboombox - 2010-03-06 01:09

oh and add a few rock groups-bon jovi, guns and roses, metallica, and the rest

ash25 - 2010-03-06 01:13

Thats what I am talking about Andy. Hairmetal bands for me all the way.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-03-08 04:01

i just been listening to some old skool beastie boys and run dmc,,that was surprisingly clear,i still think its down to this modern garbage being too loud,i even tried to record some with the record levels down, still no good, the high levels are kinda built into the actual music..something gotta be done about it,they should produce music the way it used to be done years ago..

andyboombox - 2010-03-10 02:11

hey ash
quick story-going out with a gorgeous babe as i was back in the 90s when take that were on their fist time around-had bon jovi tickets-my then girlfriend said sell the bon jovi tickets and take me to take that instead-well, as she really was gorgeous, and i thought we had a future,i did it-only to find that she ditched me,before the take that concert but after the jovi concert dates-so i missed the jovi concert and got next to nothing for the take that tickets-talk about gutted Laugh Out Loud

cman750 - 2010-04-02 16:43

Inner City Vibe for me vintage Hip-Hop Rap 1980-1986 my vision is pure beats kicking it on a court, gym, street corner, hand and hand together the Box-and this Genre of music, Zapp, Gap Band, Edwin Birdsong.Meant more than listening to my i pod today, not the same feeling.

kballenger53 - 2010-04-05 07:57

I can dig where you're comin' from Cman750. 80's music was made for The Box. So was hard pumping Disco, and House Music.

Great for taking to the park as you've mentioned.

By the way, that Avatar is KICKIN'!!! Cool
