The JVC PC-5 arrived - soundcheck !

hifitom - 2010-03-05 05:07

Hello

I bought this unit because I think it's a great looking one, and as I could read in S2G also a good sounding unit.

I bought "the cat in the sack" because the photos from the advertise didn't look that good so I was full of expectation what the postman would bring to me.

The unit was ok, wear some marks of time, complete (expect from the back wire cover) and the speakers looked great.

First soundcheck: great! Very nice sounding unit (as good as the Aiwa with the modified speakers), but after 3 min. the foam of the speakers came of Frown

So happy that I bought a long time ago speakers from a PC-3 (same type) so I could exchange them. With some help from "gettoman" (thanks!!!) how to open the speakers the exchange was no problem. Only problem: after 10 min. also here the foam came off .... ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Frown

So I had no luck with this unit and I'm looking now for some exchange speakers, or, how to refoam the originals (what I would prefer). But I never did that before. Hard job??? Any infos, a link, ...???

Thanks for your help

Oh Dave

are you shure? Last time we had a deal it was a hard fight ... and after you made me mad at the seller corner I blocked your ebay adress.

Is this mybe the reason why you contact me here in S2G?

Send me a PM to talk about this ...
Best wishes

Hi Tom,Sad that the jvc bass have rott, instead of replacing them,i would strongly recommend refoaming the origonal bass, its not that difficult,i've done it many times now..

Here is a guy refoaming his,He is called Goodhifi,he sells replacement foam surrounds on ebay..here is his video..

Hello again tom,the sound after the refoam is good, makes the speakers like new again,i have refoamed 3 pairs of pc5 speakers now,and i would always go down the refoam route everytime,i too will love to hear you opinion if you do refoam..if the foam rings are only cheap, maybe you could get 2 pairs and refoam the pc3 speakers aswell,,i had a pc3 in the 90s,its a nice little radio..

Hello Bogdan,i always like to help a fellow pc5 owner,i love them and i am a big fan of the origonal bass speakers, for the size of them, the sound is amaizing..most people dont refoam, they just throw them away and replace them..shame..

Here are some pictures:

Left old, right new speaker ...

As you could see the old foam was not in a good shape. Already dents in there ... the new one looked good ...

Same type of speaker: left PC-5, right PC-3 ...

Before and after cleaning + exchange ...

And the complete unit before the first soundcheck (with the new speakers ...) ... what a beautiful, great sounding, little unit - I love it!

Best wishes and many thanks for gettoman's support

Thanks Ghettoman, just bought a pair. Time to finally get my PC-5 box in top shape.

hifitom,
I was just sitting here listening to my dt680 and admiring it's warm smooth sound. You've got to get you one. I think you'll like it. It does an excellent job with the sub bass, it's got awesome power, and it does an incredible job taking advantage of a rooms accoustics. Make sure you sit it in a corner, elevated on a stand. The bass is eerily good for a box. I bought a dt690 and I agree with you - I'm not impressed with it's lack of sub bass either or it's overall soundstage. I also have a JVC PC-55. It sounds good too and makes an excellent attempt to reproduce even the most subtle of bass passages, but the 680 definately outpounds it and produces cleaner airyer bass while also attempting at the subtle bass passages. Congrats on your JVC pc-5! I may look at getting one of those next.

Thanks Panabox

If I can get one for a little money I will go for a DT680 ...

Thanks and best wishes
