ferguson 3t13

andyboombox - 2010-03-18 07:31

high guys, and i hope ur all allreeeeeeet!
now, before i get down to business i want to set the record straight about the ferguson brand.yes, they made tvs and vcrs, and in fact were more commonly known for these, but their radio range has always recieved a bad reputation for poor quality.
i am here to set the record straight-with my weapon-the 3t13.so here goes.hope you enjoy the review.
looks
the 3t13 from ferguson is a well-made,mid sized boombox.never intended for street action, more happily seen in the average kitchen or teenagers bedroom.it has basic looks i agree, but so does the jvc rc656 from the same period-and if you squint a bit and look at each models features they are awfully similar.
but there is a 5 point led meter and a nice, big brushed aluminium top panel on the case.so there are far worse looking machines out there.
sound
the 3t13 features a tone and volume control only, no seperate bass and treble controls.but frankly for its size it doesnt need them.this unit while not supper bassy does pick up clear tone, and has enough bass to make the output sound of at least good quality.other machines of similar age and size do do it better, but this machine sounds much better than any equivalent size hitachi of the time.even a couple of larger hitachis.and it runs rings around the equivalent smaller toshibas of the time.in the long run the 3t13 is competent, can hold a good quality tone, even at higher music levels.even if your music choice is heavy rock.
quality of build
the 3t13 has to be the best made of fergusons 3t range.it is surprisingly heavy, even without batteries (8 d cells).and it is extremely well screwed together.gives the impression it could take a lot.
verdict
all in all it is definately a box worth considering/finding.and because it has a lower reputation, you can pick them up for peanuts.
so go on, forget the rumours and buy a ferguson.if their tvs were good enough for andre previn, their radios should be good enough for you.
hope you enjoyed that!
please feel free to add your own pics/ferguson stories/reviews good or bad!
any brochure pages would also be well recieved!!!!!!!!

I've also had a Ferguson 3T13, and I agree that the build quality was very good. My main reasons for getting rid of it were the looks, the plastic squareish woofer grilles weren't really to my liking, and the real biggie was the fact that the FM tuner only went up to about 105, not 108 as is the case with the majority of FM radios. The brushed aluminium top was nice though, as were the chrome bits at the edges of the tuner window.

yeah man-the fm is a bugger-its only up to 104-my fave station is real radio-106!
yeah and i do agree its looks are a bit plain-jane, but i stand by my word it doesnt sound bad!
just goes to show though that ferguson could sell at least one decent radio.

It's much better than the 3T20. I've had one of those too but didn't like it.

andyboombox - 2010-03-20 02:22

yeah the 3t20 is a bit puny-got one with a busted speaker in the bike shed.

andyboombox - 2010-04-01 04:50

cant see your pic,mate-im on my library computer-but i seem to recall you do have the same model as mine from a picture you once posted-what are your thoughts on it?

viennasound - 2010-04-01 05:20

Yo, it´s the same pic i posted longer ago.
At mine is the tuning receiption a little weak.
But the box is in perfect mint condition. Nod Yes

andyboombox - 2010-04-01 05:52

youre not alone vienna when it comes to weak reception mate-mines the same-all i can get on FM is about 2 stations-and am and lw are even worse-if you can get worse than that.mines in slightly poorer condition than yours- i remember from your pic that yours really is mint.apart from the reception, and considering its a ferguson, i love it.
