Fake tweeter?

reli - 2010-04-11 17:32

Notice how the script says "2 way box".....implying that there are 2 speakers...

But then look at this so-called tweeter....It is some kind of solid metal disc....Like a coin.....I cannot detect any sound from it.....I looked behind it, and there ARE a couple wires hooked up to it......So my question is, why? Were they trying to "ground" high-frequency sounds in order to get rid of them? I do not understand. This is certainly not a real tweeter. Confused

its a cheap ass piezo, garbage, most likely has stopped working.

reli - 2010-04-11 18:45

But I thought piezo were at least flexible, not a solid metal coin like this

kittmaster - 2010-04-11 18:52

I've seen the solid coin with a red and black wire hanging off of it. They are cheap and eventually break down. They have a much lower SPL level, as mentioned, mostly junk.

reli - 2010-04-11 18:54

How do they break down? There doesn't look to be any moving parts that could break Confused

typically delamination of the piezo material. Mostly likely cold to hot transitions over time. Anything really could cause the failure.

Another point is that piezo tweeters don't like high power. Cone and dome tweeters can handle much more volume before expiring!

Edit:Oops! just read Kittmasters identical reply.

Most of those piezo excuses for 'tweeters' make so little contribution to the sound that you probably wouldn't even notice it had 'broken down'. Big Grin

Yeah, they do not reproduce much, sound wize.

Did you know that the Sharp GF 9595 has those! Confused Go figure!

walkgirl - 2010-04-14 06:58
