Hate GF9191 !!

im.out.of.hear - 2010-04-30 13:29

dont talk to me about 9191,i bought one yesterday for £30,its the worst piece of crap i've ever had, tape decks are crap..nothing but trouble !! when i got it,everything seemed fine, for about half an hour, then the deck packed up,the leading spool was'nt turning,so i stripped the deck, the small rubber sleeve on the capstan shaft was mush,so i replaced that..then the speed starting fluctuating,so i replaced the pinch roller and the main belt, then the apss decided to give up,stripped it down AGAIN to investigate, found that the spring on the solanoid had gone awol..finally i ended up replacing everything, after all that, put it back together, pressed play,it decided to create a wobble sound like the capstan shaft is bent,so i completely lost me temper and smashed it up in disgust, now its in pieces on my bedroom floor..never again !! i hate them..infact,sometimes i wonder why i bother collecting at all..£30 down the drain..

Eek g,man sounds like your well peeeed off about the 9191, i have to disagree thow, their 30 year old now, the one you got might of took a hammering before you got it Nod Yes you don,t know how many people have been inside it before you.
mines perfect in every way that,s why i disagree with you there.
i don,t know where abouts in manchester you are but i presume you know afflecks palace.
theres a mint one in there but the guys askin £80 bit steep i know but you could probly knock him down.
theres also an intersound discolite in there, don,t think it,s for sale thow.
if you know ryans vintage on oldham road theres quiet a few in there also, i bought a trk 8600 out of there but ended paying a ton for it Eek
just a thought mate that,s all Wink

Man, you shouldn't have destroyed that box! No No Even with a dead tape deck, it could've lived out the rest of its days in a happier home. Nod Yes Or you could've parted it out to somebody here who needed the case or whatever and got your money back... Frown

I understand your frustration, but these boxes are getting harder and harder to find. You smashed up that Sharp, but what if it was an M90 or or another top grail... I hope you can maintain your temper the next time a box gives you trouble. Nod Yes Besides, maybe the next man can fix what you can't. Wink

There are always 2-3 on Ebay Germany every week, so it wouldn't be hard to find another. Personally I am not sure why they fetch such a high price (usually 150-200 euros). They DO look very nice, one of the best looking boxes of all time... but the sound is only slightly above average. It isn't in the same league as an M70, Crown 850, TPR-950, or Universum 16000. And then there's those horrible slider controls. Whoever came up with the idea of making 2 volume sliders should be shot.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-04-30 19:22

Reli..That was My Exact Thought !! just average sound, and if i turned the bass up,instead of getting nice bass, all i got was flap and pap and distortion..

Sorry guys for upsetting you,but when you spend hours upon hours, caring and repairing, changing belt after belt, pinch roller ect, then find that it ends up worse than you first started, that just winds me up !! i normally have a very calm nerve, and can concentrate for a long time, but this just took the p*ss,so it got what was comming to it..payback !! sorry...but i regret buying it,and i wont buy another...

i sympathise with you slightly g-man-i used to have a 9090, and one minute the deck worked beautifully, and the next it gave up the ghost-but i guess its like what lav says-30 years old its probably took a beating in its life-but ive lost temper with a couple of mine in the past-when yhis happens i stick them in the garden and watch the rain rust them away Laugh Out Loud

I wouldn't. You know how much we hate seeing destroyed boomboxes on these forums. I remember someone linked a YouTube vid of a group of kids deliberately smashing up an Aiwa CS600 for no apparent reason apart from their own pleasure, and it created an uproar. The majority of members here like to see boxes preserved and polished, not in a destroyed state.
