My M90 restoration

mellymelsr - 2010-07-16 08:54

When my M90 arrive it was in excellent working order but physically, the paint was faded and had some spots and stains. First I completely stripped the front case of all components. I found the woofers were in excellent shape and still dark blue. I sanded the case with 400 grit sand paper for the rough spots and 600 for a smooth finish. One of the most difficult parts of the project was finding a paint that would match. With the original paint being faded a perfect match would be impossible. I found a paint that was very close but modern paints have more metallic content than the original. Indoors it is almost a perfect match but in the bright sun you can see the slight difference. For me it is close enough to suffice. I applied 3 coats of paint and 1 coat of clear. The clear made it way too shiny so I sanded it off and reapplied one more coat of paint. after it cured I polished it to a smooth finish. I also painted the rear cover, the handle, speaker and tweeter grills, cassette door, and the black trim inside the tweeter surrounds. I polished all chrome parts and idividually scrubbed all knobs and buttons with a tooth brush and Orange Glow cleaner (trust me this is a long process). To protect the area with writing I applied 2 layers of carnauba wax to remove residue and give it a freshly waxed look. Internally I dust and apply de-oxit to all controls and switches so the inside looks just as clean as the outside. Hope you enjoy the pics cause I think she is a looker now!

So you put wax on top of the lettering, so that you could spray paint over it without worry? Or did you just mask off that whole area?

I masked off the lettered area...everything else was stripped, sanded, then painted.

Thanks Skippy, this is an easy box to get infatuated with and the sound truly puts all 1 piece boxes to shame. It is very rich and detailed and the tweeters are the best I have ever heard. I was lucky to get this one after missing out on so many others. After hearing the constant hype of this box you wonder if it deserves it...to me it definitely does because it is the flat out best 1 piece box made...imho...your time will come Skippy...and thanks for the great comments Lav Loo... Mellymelsr - Wow! Belive it or not I have to JVC RCM-90's. The first one I bought myself in NYC when I was 16 (1983), saved up money from my job at the grocery store and plunked it down for what I thought was that most bad-ass boombox going. Then, about 15 years later I found a guys selling an RCM-90 at a fleam market for $25! Bought it on the spot without even knowing it worked. It did (tape deck is a little messed up). In any case, they both need a reconditioning. Wish I could hire you!. Best - 40ozManiac

What an awesome job. I have done many things to my boomers but I'm not sure that I would try to repaint my M90. Good for you - the results are stunning

eddy - 2010-11-15 11:44

Sweet looking work Melly. That's the problem with the 90 .You cannot completely paint is because of the lettering.

millertyme - 2016-09-06 17:14

Hey Mellymelsr can you tell me what paint you used and did you primer or use a adhesive promotor first

davebush - 2016-09-06 22:02

This thread is 6 years old.......He doesnt usually frequent here any more.....try the other site

mellymelsr - 2016-09-06 22:55

I'll can check for you...have to look through my box of paint cans in the garage. I'll get you the info tomorrow.

mellymelsr - 2016-09-06 23:02

Adhesive promoter wasn't needed. Just stripped, sanded till smooth, primered and painted. Still looks exactly the same today. Not a chip or scratch on it.

Yes that is the color I use for repainting. It has a little more metallic in than the original M90 finish so if you use it for touchup on scratches, it might show. Overall, the best color match I have seen.

I painted the cassette door on the M90 shown below.
