WHICH BOOMBOX TO BUY? HELP!

mix.masta.mullet - 2010-08-16 11:28

hey people.
im looking to buy a nice boombox from, probably the sharp gf series (are the better makes?? im open!) there are obviously loads of different models and i was just wondering the pros and cons. i basically want one which looks dope AND sounds good. a combo of the two. and probably want to spend around $200.
which sound good?
which are collectable and 'considered' the doper of the series?
where should i get one?
(im in the uk and am looking worldwide on ebay)

... i looked at this one and obvisouly thought it looked dope AND the speakers look to be made of that slightly better than usual material.. a good buy? - (im aware its loads on postage, its just an example of the type of thing id like)

AND IMPORTANTLY - the boombox i chose to buy NEEDS a line in for a phono cable, to plug in an ipod etc.

right im done!
any help or advice would be very much appreciated, i dont want to make a bum purchase!

peace!

are JVC better? as good?

lav.loo - 2010-08-16 12:38

hi there MIX MASTA, it,s quiet hard to say which box to go for really cos there,s that many different types and all have different quality,s Nod Yes
if you want quality and good sound you should go for a trusted brand, e.g PANASONIC, SHARP, JVC.
but if you want big and flashy, you should go for a LASONIC or SUPER JUMBO, depending on your funds Nod Yes there,s just so many great boxes out there to choose from, stick around here a while and you will get all the info you need, hope this helps you Wink

mix.masta.mullet - 2010-08-16 12:52

thanks man! haha you arent wrong about there being so many out there, ive just been looking around and its insane! but daunting Frown
thats cool that you mentioned those brands - panasonic, jvc, sharp.. that helps. flashy is cool but sounds more important to me and ive seen some very good looking boxes from those companies.
i hope someone can suggest some models to narrow it down, im not great on decisions like this!
peace.

yea saw that dude. i like it a lot, but am feeling a chrome number for my first box. i fully intend to collect some, and that would be a nice entry, but at the mo just want one im really feeling to rock until i can afford more.
ive seen a phillips d8614 for sale which i love the look of, and by the look of the speakers should be pretty good on the audio tip too. your thoughts sir?

im.out.of.hear - 2010-08-16 13:57

Well the 8614 are a cool box but unfornunately i've never owned one,i reckon lav is the best man to speak to about this one man,he has one and loves it..

lav.loo - 2010-08-16 14:02

ye iv,e told him to go for it G,MAN Big Grin

im.out.of.hear - 2010-08-16 14:09

That one IS considered "dope" because of its classic styling, and it is very popular, but I wouldn't recommend buying from China, they often do not reveal all the problems a unit has. Also, the Phillips D8614 sounds better in my opinion.

I Agree i know PHILIPS are not everyones fave brand, but to the people who have never given the d8614 a go...your missing out big time Nod Yes Wink

I think for a first time box you can't go wrong with a Sharp. They're easiest to work on inside and in my opinion are better build quality than most other big brands. A Sharp will give you something to mess with for hours but wet the appetite for more. Learning from a Sharp is a good way to start in my opinion.

jameswp67 - 2010-08-23 10:33

A Sharp 8989 or 9191 are awesome first boxes imho...

lav.loo - 2010-08-23 10:47

I Agree i have a 9191 and love it, these mid sized sharps are nice detailed boxes and good sound too, i suggested the philips d8614 because it leaves the sharps standing in the sound quality department though, and has the look, and i think it,s sound and looks he,s after, so with the philips you can,t go wrong Wink

by the way JWP67, you should really give one of them BIGBENS to me Nod Yes i would love one they look cool Big Grin

mix.masta.mullet - 2010-08-24 00:39

yea im going up to see paul next week, he has a 9191 and 8989 for me and i think they look awesome. i may also get a jvc from him, pc 3 i think, for some variety and to hear the difference in sound. i really want a philips d8614 too, they visually appeal to me a hell of a lot and lav assures me they sound great. there was one on ebay for £20 and the women ended up selling privately in the end Frown gutted about that. if anyone knows of one of those philips going please let me know Smile
