I seem to have got to a point...

retro.addict - 2011-01-25 14:50

...where I'm not very interested in boomboxes. At the moment I have my Crown CSC-950 playing, for the first time in a few weeks. I'm only playing because I feel guilty. I hate feeling like this. I've been thinking today, I have about 40 of these big space taking things that pretty much all do the same thing (or less depending on whether the cassette deck works or not), yeah they look different etc, but do I need them? They seem an awful lot of hassle. I'm seriously considering trying to sell the majority of my boxes and keeping my GF-777 and a few others I would call favourites. Does anyone else feel like this sometimes?

litfan - 2011-01-25 14:55

Yeah, but, believe me retro. That feeling will go off. Don`t get shut bro. Been there. It`s not nice.

billy.the.binman - 2011-01-25 14:58

yeah i no the feeling, loss of mojo. happens to everyone.

i personally try to only keep a few at a time, it can be a little daft having so many.

cool to have 40 though!

im.out.of.hear - 2011-01-25 15:09

same as me retro..i've sold alot of my boxes over the past few months, gave some away, thrown some, even my 777 and my old lasonic 931 got sold,i fell out of love with boxes years ago,i think i only have them now out of habbit more than love of collecting..alot more are going to go soon now my paypal is sorted out,i think its due to me getting older,i just cant be bothered anymore,i'm not much of a music person either so they barely get used, maybe once a year "if that" ..
also..boxes were made for taking outside, but i cant take them out,so what else can be done with them..not alot really..

lav.loo - 2011-01-25 15:14

i too have felt like that before Nod Yes although i have never had 40 at once, i did get up to about 15 at some point and felt like i had a few too many Big Grin it's great to have so many if you have the space though, (unlike me).
i would say the same as LITFAN, you'll only regret it.
i would say if your feeling this way, sell some on, just a few, and see how you feel.
there you go, that's my humble advice RA, oh i almost forgot, dibs on your 9000 Big Grin Wink

retro.addict - 2011-01-25 15:17

My boxes will get a lot more use when I move house, it's just not convenient playing them where they currently are, there just isn't enough space. I need a room where I can easily move the boxes, have all my cables and music collection etc, somewhere I can boom them really loud and appreciate them for what they are, not putting up with them as it is now.

Thanks for the advice and guidance Lav, sounds a very good idea. Believe it or not, the 9000 doesn't excite me, it never really has. Though when I got it, I loved it due to it being my biggest and coolest looking box at that point. It looks mint too. The cassette deck doesn't work on it, a massive shame. And the bass is very poor, the rest of the sound is good but it really lacks proper bass. It disappoints me every time I play it. Even the GF-777 disappoints me slightly, the tweeters don't make enough noise so it lacks treble.

lav.loo - 2011-01-25 15:24

hey how do you think i feel, mine are all boxed apart from the 2 in use Nod Yes
i can't put them on show yet for various reasons, but atleast i know their safe and dust free for the future Wink

driptip - 2011-01-25 16:08

been there done that, but i am with the guys, sell some and see how you feel.

im.out.of.hear - 2011-01-25 16:16

R.A everything you've said about the GF9000 and 777 is correct,my 9000 has no bass, and all the 9000s i've ever had was the same, but i do have one where i changed the bass speakers and it sounds alot better,my 777 sounded quite good compared to most sharp 1 piece models, but the subs were abit tight, and they flapped,my favorite sharp with the nicest sound is my GF9500,i just love the looks and the sound is great, but its a 3 piece, personally i love 3 piece but most people dont...

retro.addict - 2011-01-25 16:35

Ghettoman, the subs on my GF-777 are fine and sound awesome, but the outer speakers and tweeters are not so good. The outer woofers themselves can more than handle the power and can go loud, but they lack definition and precise clarity, if you know what I mean. Don't mention the tweeters, they're terrible. Oh and one of the subwoofers is always slightly lower volume than the other, a fault I know is there, and it annoys me.

lav.loo - 2011-01-25 16:44

cheer up guys, it's like a morg round here Big Grin

im.out.of.hear - 2011-01-25 16:49

yeah my subs sounded good but aslong as the sub levels was kept at a moderate volume,my GF999 is kind of simular but i much prefure it,everything about it is better, its got abit more kick than the 777,and the looks are completely awsom compared, and the 999 does'nt have the front panel that can suffer pitting or corrotion like all the others, its just normal silver, not chrome..

retro.addict - 2011-01-25 16:56

Sorry LAV, I'm just feeling a bit down about boxes at the moment. With your new moderator privileges you could probably delete this topic if you like so it doesn't pull the forum mood down! Laugh Out Loud By the way, you know I don't take things personally on here, it's all fun and in good taste. Wink

lav.loo - 2011-01-25 17:05

me delete this topic...naah never, im just here as an extra pair of hands, it was very good of RETRO to put me forward for the job, although it will take a bit of getting used to it, it involves more than just deleting and stuff Wink

blaster - 2011-01-25 17:08

id say keep your favorites... Smile

retro.addict - 2011-01-25 17:21

LAV, I'm sure the whole moderator thing is a whole lot more than deleting stuff. I hope you don't get too stressed or bogged down doing it all. You was the perfect choice to be made a moderator, as you've revived this forum if I'm honest. Nod Yes

Oh yeah Blaster, there's some boxes I have that I'll never sell or get rid of, the Sharp GF-777 being the very top one, followed by the Philips D8534, the Panasonic RX-CT900, the Sharp GF-9000, and some others.

lav.loo - 2011-01-25 18:07

ha ha lol, if i get to stressed or bogged down, il'e hand over to you RA Big Grin
i noticed the crown 850 is'nt in your top 4 Confused it would be in mine Nod Yes Wink

samsnite - 2011-01-26 05:22

I think its healthy that you realize your situation but just dont make it your greatest regret ever...

radio.raheem - 2011-01-26 05:57

Yup ra sell the not so good ones and keep the good ones like your 777 etc..don't make the same mistake i did and that was selling lots of grails like my sanyo 920 wich i doubt ill ever replace...the standard 3 peice boxes are easy to replace 10 to a penny but dont sell boxes you know you can't replace...good luck on whateaver you decide...

Hand your privileges over to me, haha. I somehow think I wouldn't be as good as you lol. Yeah the Crown 950 would be on the list also, cause it's gorgeous, but mainly due to how much I paid for it, oh and did I mention cause it looks really nice? Wink The Blockbuster would be one of the keepers too, when I finally get it fixed! Roll Eyes Tap Toes

docs - 2011-01-26 07:12

Really sorry to hear your in the blues at the moment RA. Don't jump just yet, sleep on it a while and spend some time even dusting them off a little and just enjoying having time with them.
Regarding that blockbuster, let me know via a PM what they have diagnosed so far and what they think it is, if you get nowhere I'll look at it for you for nothing if you want, obviously I can't guarantee I would fix it but I'd give it my attention and try.

R.A., I lose interest from time to time, and as we all know it is a space permitting hobby that often results in a cupboard full of amazing boxes that rarely see the light of day. You're lucky to own the quality of boxes you do though and it would surely be a shame to let a load of them go after the time and effort spent searching, fixing and cleaning.

I'm in a similar position but it's an easier decision for me. I own about 35, half of which are not that rare or special so when I eventually cut the collection down to size, it will be easy to let a few go. My plan (and this could work for you) is to sell the majority of my average boxes, and any money I make will pay for 1 or 2 grails or rare boxes. I want to get into M90/GF777/GF1000/BigBen territory (wish me luck! Laugh Out Loud ) for example, leaving me with a smaller collection of top notch machines.

There must be a couple more out there you'd give your right arm for R.A., boxes that you wouldn't mind looking at everyday.

KND
Can I start off by saying 'luck wished!' on finding the grails you want.

I found 2 of the grails I was after (GF-9000 and GF-777), but I also picked up a load of trashy boxes along the way. I have a couple of broken ones too. Even so, I vividly remember finding all those boxes and cleaning them up, I've had aching shoulders and back quite a few times from carrying the heavy ones home. It would be a shame to just let go of all that time and effort.

And what you said about having a cupboard full of amazing boxes that never see the light of day, that's exactly what I have! My GF-9000 and GF-777 are in there, as are many minty boxes including the Philips D8534, Panasonic RX-CT900, Sony CF-495 (big '70s mono box), Hitachi TRK-8080, Panasonic RX-5500 and others which I really like.

Yeah there are many grail boxes I would still love to find, and some unlikely small non-grail boxes. I'd really like to lay my hands on a nice clean Sharp GF-A2. Nod Yes

Thanks for the comment.

Nah, I'm not getting rid, I feel a bit better about it now I've slept on it. I really do need to get rid of all these crappy cheap boxes though, it will take time and a lot of effort but it has to be done.

Used once a year?! Oh dear. Do you notice any difference in the working condition of your boxes when they finally get used again, after many months? If I leave mine for ages then power them up, sometimes I find the sound balance is off, and can't be sorted without contact cleaner, and the controls can be scratchy whereas before they were perfect.

Yeah, you never see people carrying boxes now, only at special events etc if you're lucky, but that doesn't count. Boxes are just too heavy and inconvenient in comparison to newer portable audio stuff, you can see why, when people now have a beefier sound than a boombox pumping directly in their ears, and hundreds of songs at their disposal, without the faffing about with tapes. In fact, I can't really fathom why manufacturers still make radios with handles which take batteries. If they're not going to be used outside, why have a battery compartment? Every person I've seen who listens to a radio these days just plug it in and leave it where it is. It has to be said though, this era in which we live must aid in the preservation of boxes, cause I imagine they got bashed to hell when they were used outside.

l.lopez - 2011-01-26 18:29

SmileIntresting topic and thanks RA for bringing this up as there is times that I feel like I'm hordering too much as I have barely space to walk and so I just sell some to make space but before I do I shoot a video on them and pics and keep them for my records as saying that I had almost 300 boomboxes would be hard to beleave so I video and picture them to it someday and I just go through videos and sometimes I feel sad know is gone, But then I feel happy that is going to a member who would love it as much as I did. Smile

mellymelsr - 2011-01-26 22:04

I can't say I have ever gotten bored of my radios. I only keep about 30 grail quality boxes at one time so I am not overwhelmed by the number of radios I have. Also it helps that I have a large man-cave with all my radios on display and all plugged in so I can listen to any of them by just plugging in my Ipod. But most of all I grew up during the boombox era so I love all my radios and listen to at least one every day. Living in sunny California also gives me the ability to carry mine around at the park, beach, basketball court and to the gym. Hopefully you will find that fire again and start using those radios...or you could sell them to me...lol.
