The best boombox / dockingstation of those days?

hifitom - 2010-11-09 08:57

Hello

I'm looking for a boombox or dockingstation with a built in fm-radio. I tested a few, but didn't find the right one till now.

I was disapointed of the sound of the B&W Zeppelin (for that much money I expected more) and sweetly surprised of the sound of the JBL on stage 200/400.

I saw on ebay a Altec Lansing IMT 800, which look almost as a real boombox - how does this thing sound???

Thanks for informations
TOM

Regarding the Altec 800, there was one at the last Sunshine meet and we all got to hear it.

No joke..., EVERYBODY was impressed.

I do think it will meet your high standards, hifitom. Smile

I dropped by a Future Shop today (Canadian electronics store) for some printer ink. Turns out they had the Altec Lansing IMT800, as well as the Sony G-Tank and the Beatbox (Monster Beats) by Dr. Dre. All are, in some way, interpretations of the boombox, although only the Altec can be run on batteries.

Initial impressions: The Altec seems to be the best bang for the buck. It's smaller than I thought it would be, but heavy and well made. Loud and bassy for its size, but hard to really judge volume in a big open store. The Sony's LED-lit woofers look cool, and this is a pretty big unit. Looks better in person than in pics. Doesn't sound as big as its looks, though. The Beatbox (2X the cost of the Altec) has good sound, too. I think it's louder than the Altec, but would need to do more comparisons. Not much to look at (IMHO) - plain, bordering on ugly.

I'll be doing some more testing later this week when I have time - it's nice to have these units in the same store.

Thinking about getting the Altec, as it's on sale for $229. But may just wait for the new TDK to show up - looks like that may trump everything else.

Never seen that Sony before.

Looks like the latest trend is for transportable rather than fully portable. I can see why: Back in the 80s, if at all possible I plugged in to save the batteries (in the youth club, etc.).

ok, i got to get a demo test drive in the store of the altec lansing imt800...they allowed me to put my ipod in it to test it....i was impressed with the sound of the unit...very good bass...nice controls...the only thing i wish altech payed more attention is was in the actual ipod dock area...though it is secure with the bar around it...but if your carrying or swaying it the ipod tends to rock "a bit" back and forth and depending how you lean it as well...though im sure you can put some spacers of some kind to keep it from moving but other than that...good sounding box...but the innovative technologies box thats where they payed attention in securing the ipod in the booth they have...it is held with to strong clamps that releases with button latch...so the IT wins for that area of feature plus other unique features it has...now on the lasonic i931 i had no querks just only if they worked on the bass a tad would of been a perfect ipod box....just my mini reviews on them... Smile Wink

Hmm, that Sony is ugly IMO.......Same goes for almost every Sony product these days. They seem like they are styled for teenagers. All bark, no bite.
