Power source for my boombox

icedragon - 2010-12-02 14:43

Hey guys,

So I'm attempting to make my first boombox. Now this will probably seem like a silly question to those in the know, but I need advice. I don't have a spare car battery anywhere, so I was wondering if I could use a car battery CHARGER to power the amp? Assuming I could set it to fast charge (5A, the same as my amp), would it be possible to use it to give a continuous current?

Cheers!

um.... probably not the best idea. You will burn up your charger and I doubt the power will be clean enough to use anyway. Plus it will no longer be "portable" no way

agree -- VERY bad plan no way

just buy a small ( 4 or 7 AH ) 12 volt gel cell
battery --
then you are portable and rechargeable

Yea the battery is best, its portable, the charger will not work, trust me. I also use a 12 volt power source meant for portable refrigerators and it will give out some 5 amps and it works very well with car radios for example. And its cheap, cost around 15-20 euros.

OK thanks, thought this would be the case. Just worrying about the fact that if I get a 7AH battery its only gonna last me a bit more than an hour (5A amplifier).

Cheers

go for the fridge power source if you dont need portability, just make sure it will give you enough amps. I dont think the idle power consumption is that high...
