Crown CSC-950 question

retro.addict - 2010-12-13 05:24

Hi, I've been looking for one of these for ages, and have finally bought one. It's the best looking box ever, in my opinion. I am awaiting its arrival.

I've noticed on pictures that the woofers look smaller than the 8" grilles. Does it have proper 8" woofers?

Also, is this a good sounding box? What does it compare to?

lav.loo - 2010-12-13 09:23

congrats RA, DOCS has the 950 and it's a real sweet box, it looks real nice and sounds very good too, i love the very responsive led's on that one, defo a box id'e love to own Nod Yes Wink

Shame. Frown Wink Does it sound as good as a GF-9090/9191?

lav.loo - 2010-12-13 15:27

i honestly could'nt really say RA, i never heard it being played that loud, from what i could tell at the vol it was at, is that it sounded good, but nothing special, i would find it hard to compare with anything really, maybe ask DOCS, as he has the box and a 9090/9191 to compare it too, even if the sound was s**t it would'nt matter cos it looks real nice Nod Yes Wink

retro.addict - 2010-12-13 15:30

Hey DOCS, how does the CSC-950 sound? Have I got something to look forward to?

driptip - 2010-12-13 16:00

Retro addict, i have one and the sound is nothing special, bass shy, not that loud either, i just have it for its looks.

retro.addict - 2010-12-13 17:25

Thanks driptip, I'll just have to enjoy it for its looks then! Cool

The Panasonic RX-5500 is another box that doesn't sound that good, I showed it to my friend and he said "Turn the bass up." Frown I was embarrassed to admit it was already set at maximum. Leaving

I have that box cause I love its looks, and it's build quality is amazing.

reli - 2010-12-13 17:51

The RX5500 might be low on bass, but it has outstanding precision for classical, jazz, soul, & acoustic music.

And if you want a Crown, you need to get yourself an 850. It has more bass than any other 1-piece I've tried, although I've never tried an M90 before.

driptip - 2010-12-13 19:25

most boxes dont have much bass, the 5500 is one of them but the sound fills a room and the quality and feel when turning the knobs makes up for it specially when is in great condition, i love mine, (it came from big Lav)

I agree with you on the precision and fullness of sound from the 5500, but the depth of bass that I like is just not there.

The Crown CSC-850 is a very nice looking box, but I'm not keen on the unusual carry-strap arrangement. I'd definitely be going for one of them if it had a conventional handle.

Yes, mine is near mint, it looks great, and is fully working. But it just doesn't have that booming bass that some other similar-sized boxes (such as the Sanyo M9990 and G.E Blockbuster) have. That's something I really notice.

that is so true of the 5500, it sounds awesome with acoustic music, i can say the same for the 5250, amazing sound with acoustics, and i think it has a little more bass than the 5500, although i like the look of the 5500 a little more Wink

docs - 2010-12-14 03:27

In my opinion the 950 is as good as a 9090/9191 if not better in terms of audio quality. Mine has some decent bass, not really deep but its there and just enough. Its a middle of the road to above average sounding box overall and the VU's are responsive and its a joy to look at. I like listening to it and it is cmparable to a 9191 in my opinion. Playing 80's electro/hiphop it sounds great.

Those original '80s ones will be hard to find I think. Why not try Argos? They sell the retro black Casio digital watches, the F-91W and and the W-86. I wear a W-86 at work cause it's so lightweight I can't feel it when it's on. Both are very cheap, but have that essential '80s look! The W-86 is the more expensive of the two.

My Sanyo 9994, GE Blockbuster, and GE 6035 will all easily dust it in sound, clarity and bass. Although it is a beautiful box, looks alone weren't enough to make me keep it...here is a pic...
Cool modified one! Cool Looks may be enough to make me keep mine, we'll see. I reserve judgement on this one. I love the big knobs on top and the massive volume knob! Big Grin That top panel is just lovely, and uncluttered. Plus I love the placement of the LED meter. Nod Yes

I had a look on there a while ago, as I have a passing interest in old digital watches. I'm now a member under this name. Cool
