What boxes are you sick of seeing?

ao - 2010-12-11 10:46

I'm curious, I know we all spend hours pouring over eBay looking for poorly listed gems but tell me, what boxes are you bored with seeing so many of. In the UK we had a glut of GF-555's, Hitachi TRK-9012's and GF-9191's and for me, it made a nice box dull, if you know what I mean.

So, tell us, what box would you pass on in a flea market or on eBay just because there are just so damn many of them?

skippy1969 - 2010-12-11 11:07

That Lasonic 931i pod box.............. Bleh head bash

bendycat - 2010-12-11 12:29

777 on ebay all coming out the woodwork Roll Eyes

i would love one but never gonna buy one from the bay

im.out.of.hear - 2010-12-11 13:47

Good Thread Cris..A refreshing change..
Yes you see loads of GF555,777,8989,575,hitachi 8190,3d woofers..i actually passed on a few 3d woofers, few eggs and a sharp vz a while ago..

just got shut of my 777 bendy, and i sold a few over the past few months, alot more are for the chop soon, they'll be going on ripbay..i think the time has come to get out of it and just keep a handfull, getting boring and i'm getting too old,i think 20 years of hard core collecting is long enough..

matrixambience - 2010-12-11 16:31

I agree with Bendycat.....sharp gf-777. Cannot get around to ever liking them, and they are all over epay!!

retro - 2010-12-11 16:37

Those mini colored Kabooms with the glowing dustcaps make me nauseous.

l.lopez - 2010-12-11 17:00

LeavingI'm sick of seeing those yellow Sny CFD-980 boomboxes, I have one and I can't bare to see it anymore so I put it in the closet.

reli - 2010-12-11 19:10

Those black eggs with the "covert spy camera" which they are trying to get $300-400 for......ridiculous.

And all those Kaboom replicas on Ebay Germany, I think they are called AEG or something like that.

redbenjoe - 2010-12-11 19:22

im.out.of.hear - 2010-12-12 05:44

you know..ira,i actually kind of understand what your saying,i just looked at a pic of one,i dont mind the front of it,i actually quite like it,but as for the back of it,thats quite the opposite,it just reminds me of a bigg old ass tv,really deep and old fashioned, kinda odd looking, not sure i could live with that..thats my only gripe with it really..

docs - 2010-12-12 05:59

Not bored of seeing any 80's boomers. more recent ones is a different story. All the replicas and little egg styles do my head in.

redbenjoe - 2010-12-12 06:24

yup gman --the back and side views are the worst parts --

anyway , you must know the age old saying...

im.out.of.hear - 2010-12-13 09:19

Neither the M70 or the M90 have ever done anything for me,Just not my style i guess,i just think they look abit bland and boring..

Dave,Good Pick of the Eploding Ka-boOOM.. jumpy

Talking of kabooms, although i'm not a fan of them myself,my friend has got one and i have to admit, they do sound good, but i still would'nt have one,i'm just showing my respect for there good sound..

And i reckon we all club together and buy Ira 2 Big Bens laugh about

reli - 2010-12-13 10:14

Ebay must really love making profit off collectors, because some boxes seem to re-appear on Ebay only a couple weeks after being sold. Certain Sanyos and Hitachis come to mind.

jt - 2010-12-14 10:57

I can't stand any of the plastic fantastic boxes like some the lasonics or discolite boxes. The ones that look heavy, but when you pick them up they feel light and sound really hollow when you turn up the bass.

Eggs are only good for breakfast or making cake.

Any box with stickers or with fake buttons like non-working EQs make me want to puke. Tape window clings are cool, though.

I never could get into the units with off-center tape decks. Like that Magnavox or Aiwa 880, although that Aiwa sounds superb!

The twin deck Sharp GF-555,666 or 777 type boxes never did it for me aesthetically, but I do appreciate their features sets and build quality. Especially the ones that let you fade from one deck to another. How cool is that?

But, classic look boxes like the GF-9191, M70 or M9990 never get old. To me those are what got me into this. If I ever get sick of those then It will be time for me to quit this hobby.

im.out.of.hear - 2010-12-14 11:38

The worst thing about the big empty boxes are the cheap and nasty tape decks, ther made out of a motor and a belt..the lasonics are not that bad, they feel quite solid, the j1 is cool, they dont have any false or fake stuff, and it feels solid and sounds nice..the jc2000 looks more cheap and nasty because of the sticker with the fake spectrum analyzer, now that is tacky, but they have a fowllowing because one sold on german ebay the other day for 435 euro..the most dodgy emtpty box is the crown sz5100/unisef sz5000,when you pick one of them up,it feels propper dodgy, creeky plastic noises and ropey handle, but even if the handle broke,i cant see much damage happening because it does'nt weigh anything, and there is nothing to break because theres hardly anything inside it..still look good though and sound is'nt that bad either..

The egg box's to me remind's of that robot's head that Rocky bought for Paulie that image is quite funny though. Big Grin

isolator42 - 2010-12-18 07:42

I was almost with Walkgirl here (I assume she meant the M90), but they're a rare sight on eBay, so I thought on...

For me it's deffo those knock-off Kabooms. The thing that made a Kaboom worth having was the sound, esp. the bass. Remove that & all you've got is a silly looking AND poor sounding boomer, that's hanging on the coat-tails of something worthwhile...

walkgirl - 2010-12-18 08:52

Jup, that m90 thing Red Face

ao - 2010-12-18 09:32

Apart from the usual suspects, the one that really gets my donkey is that vile yellow philips with the strap. Can't recall the model number but it looks like it was sold in Toys R Us

fuzzyduck - 2010-12-18 12:21

All those damned eggs and things resembling black puddings... HATE THEM ALL!!!! explode head bash head bash

I can't get enough of all the sexy 777's and their relatives on ebay, I save pics of all the best ones! Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

im.out.of.hear - 2010-12-18 12:23

LOL, he relisted it due to non-paying bidder. No surprise there. I also love the $55 shipping even though he lives in the same state as me.

Yeh, the D8300. Philips lost their way big-style in the later 80s. They went from making elegant looking stuff to over-styled, ugly-as-sin, primary-coloured, kooky rubbish IMHO. The sound was still good for the money (ask Daiwa about the D8300), but the looks... ugh.

wowminister - 2011-05-13 08:21

Well coming from a part of the world that see's very few boomboxes, as long as they are pre 86 its all gold to me.

I have a mint one andy....both decks don't work though....If i were you I wouldn't bother thpugh.....as there not all that....no bass for a kick off

ghettoman - 2011-05-17 03:28

i agree, the GF555 is a strange one,on the upside, its a solid, heavy, top quality constructed box, and its very loud,on the downside they have those stupid tyres on the capstan shaft, but the tyres are hard to find, most people have to make there own, so deck failure is quite common and a bit of a pain to repair on these, also i agree on sound,i liked it,its really loud and has good quality solid sound,it does have bass, but its just not quite deep enough for my liking,i still loved mine when i had one,i think i only sold it for £10 to a friend.

I offered mine free to a couple of friends...They diddn't want it they thought it was loud...but basically they thought it sounded poo like I do...hence it's in my shed...
