TRC 931

smokinendo - 2008-06-03 06:57

OK I'm looking for some info on the Lasonic TRC 931. I recently bought one but it's much different then the ones I remember as a kid. The one I bought has a much curvier cabinet and looks even more inferior then the more squared off models. What I'm wondering is what year did the 931 come out (was guessing 86), how many years did they make it for (was guessing 86-91 ?) , how many times did they change the cabinet over the production timeline and when

I know it's a little much but I figured one or some of you guys might be able to help me ?

Anyway heres a pic of my new boomer notice how rounded the cabinet is (found locally)

exerpt from old thread:

1) ALC switch
2) Mic. Sel. switch
3) Tape Sel: Normal/metal switch
4) Tape counter
5) 1 antenna (old version has dual antennae)
6) One set of line in jacks (old version has BOTH phono in, plus regular line-in)
7) Line out jacks

And for the reissue, both the microphone & headphone jacks were moved to the front of the unit, whereas on the old version, the jacks are on the side, with all the other inputs.(salavatin` army)

Ok, I just found out that there were 3 versions of these! 1986, 1990, and 2000. What one is mine?

Yours is the '86.I think there where more than 3 including all of the slight variations.

Off topic I know,but....Is that a copy of Frank Zappa- Apostrophe(') on the turntable?....8)

Hi Guys,
I am new to this site.
Just came across a Lasonic TRC-931
It's almost identical to the versions I usually see on eBay and on this site.
However, it has a "sleep function" on the left hand side.
Is this common or do I have a rare unit?
Thanks in advance!

I *believe* that's the 1990 model.

that's the same model i have. the only date reference i've found is inside the battery compartment, a paper sticker that reads "Date Code: 01". i don't know what that means, though. it can't be 2001. maybe it's 1901. Razz

Aaron:

Could be 2001, but it doesn't look like the 2000 model (rounded corners on that one)

Thanks for the pointers guys.
This thing is 80s vintage that's for sure.
I will open here up and check the date codes on the IC chips and PC boards. That should tell the whole story.
BTW, the unit is good shape as you can see in the pics, except for a missing eject button on the front loading cassette.

The bottom cassette mechanism has several "loose" piano key buttons. They appear depressed on the PIC, but they are actually not making contact. I hope this is an easy repair. I would like to make her sing again.

Regards,

Salavatin'Army:I'm willing to bet all these Lasonics pictured are the late 80s/1990 version.

Because, wasnt there a version of the trc931 with a VU meter?

I would definitely hypothesize that the VU meter version came first, and then when they re-released it, they took out the VU meter to save costs, and replaced it with the LED light instead. And then when it was re-released again in 2000, they seem to have used cheaper components, cheaper plastic, got rid of all the outputs, rounded the corners, deleted a few switches, etc.

Thanks Jens Smile

So would you say that mine is a 2000 model ? I sure hope not LOL I was guessing it was from around 90 or 91 ?

Any ideas or personal opinions

Also I know it said in your reply that they made them from 86 - 90 & 2000

so is the 2000 model the I931 ?

Also does that mean that they made the 931 from 86-2000 or did they stop from 91-99 ?

I hope I'm not asking questions no one has an answer to

Thanks again and any help is greatly appreciated

Brian

most lasonics have a date code sticker in the battery compartment or date code stamp on the inside of the case usually on the rear cover if you can find them you will have the answer.as far as i know the 2000 931 is the re issue of the original 931 but with those funky looks.
