There's no skool like Oldskool!

fatdog - 2008-05-26 21:34

Freddie and his wife, La-Tunya, came up this past weekend and spent a couple of days here in Smyrna, TN. My daughter's 8th birthday was yesterday at the local bowling center and Freddie showed up (late as usual) Laugh Out Loud as everybody else was leaving. So, I stayed around and we bowled a couple of games before heading to Famous Dave's with the women-folk to get a bite to eat. A great dinner and fabulous conversation ensued and afterwards, we split up and refreshed ourselves for the next day.

I had planned on taking all our boxes to the local library park with the fountain for some "family portrait" type shots, but alas, mother nature literally rained on our parade. The Jenkins kitchen table would have to do.

First off, let me just say that I've never really been a fan of three-piece boxes; they always seemed "cheap" in my opinion. After seeing, and carrying, what was in Freddie's truck - I have a new-found respect for three-piecers. I think the lightest weight box he brought was 30 pounds! Damn! Most of his small boxes weighed as much as my Sharp GF-777! Eek

There was lots of knob twisting (not Ed's), switch switching, and EQ fiddling. I loaded up the iPod with a hodge-podge of different music to try out on each box - a couple of JVCs, a National (very nice), the totally overrated Sansui CP7 Laugh Out Loud, and more - kept me busy for a while. Sadly, Murphy showed up and presented problems with most of the boxes in one way or another and even took out some of mine with him.

Other than that, we had a great time! You're welcome anytime, Freddie!!

Probably my favorite box overall:

Ira's crappy tape job on the Phillips: Laugh Out Loud

Here I am working the EQ (no, not Ed's knobs):

Nice!

Very nice!

LOL! That's one of the 40W stickers for the JVC RC-M90! Laugh Out Loud That was one of my test clings.

But... if you promise me that I can play with the siren and lights on your cruiser and beat somebody down, I'll make you anything you want! Laugh Out Loud

thafuzz - 2008-05-26 21:56

Man! I gotta hook up with you and Freddie soon. Seems lile y'all had a great time. Maybe when we go see my in-laws in Southern Indiana, can we swing by for a visit.

oldskool69 - 2008-05-26 21:57

Hey All! My wife and I had a great time! The drive back was a drag though, severe thunderstorms as soon as we got within 20 miles of Alabama and the rest of the way home. But I'd drive through a rainstorm to see Bobby again in a heartbeat. A1+ in my book and a great host! A kindred spirit if you will. I'd say more but I need to go to bed as I must drive another 120 miles south back to Montgomery for work this week. More to come.... Big Grin

What model is that?

fatdog - 2008-05-26 22:21

That's the Rising SRC-2015 modded with quad LEDs in the dial window.

reli - 2008-05-26 22:23

Rising? New one to me. Nice mod though -- how did you get the whole strip to look like it's lit up evenly?

fatdog - 2008-05-26 22:30

There are two, 1,500 mcd LEDs on each side of the dial window to help with the brightness. I've got some 18,000 mcd LEDs I might try out - super bright! Basically, there's another piece of plastic behind the dial window that acts as a carrier for the light, sort of the same concept as fiber optics. The carrier is right up against the metal with the white silkscreened numbers and letters and makes them appear to be glowing.

l.lopez - 2008-05-26 22:41

SmileGreat pics of family fun.

reli - 2008-05-26 22:48

Oh, I get it. Who is Rising, are they equivalent to another make?

I thought it was a bomb when it arrived at my door in a bag. And for all of you paying attention be on the lookout for after much weeping and counseling with Bobby...I will finally tell the story this weekend. It even affected my dog... Laugh Out Loud

But, by the time it arrived with me at Bobby's house she was ready to go and I can tell you, we both enjoy that Philips. Handle scares the crap out of us but the sound is sweet. Nod Yes

daiwa - 2008-05-27 06:39

Great stuff fellows! Yeah, that Rising is especially attractive. Eek Super photos FDog!

kid.sensation - 2008-05-27 08:30

No! Don't hide those keys! I must drive "The Bandit!" Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

redbenjoe - 2008-05-27 14:26

hey oldy --try to plan the trip so you see everybody --me and ramon are a few hundred miles away on the east coast --
but LOTS of members are over on the 'lowly' Smile west coast --
ford , JT , TA , danny , skillphil , enskanker and

WHO ELSE ? --- speak up NOW -everybody --

also --in case you still like Pan Fan --he is lost in the heat of central state near orlando.

IF you can get most of them together at one day -- we can save you the big extra trip -and meet you all over there --HUGE PARTY !!

oldskool69 - 2008-05-27 17:12

That is a great idea. Let's get something cooking...a "Southeast Convention" if you will.

Now...Bobby was totally enthralled by the Sansui's! He had no idea just how powerful they were! Overrated? Never! See he sat down in front of the 99W and was mesmerized. Confused even! Look at the photo! Laugh Out Loud

I can't even show what he started doing with the CP-7. Not suitable for the sensitive eyes here! Laugh Out Loud He requested some "time alone" with it. I knew something was afoot and had to pull him away slowly. He's still dreaming of the throw the woofers and passive radiator has. Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

fatdog - 2008-05-27 17:33

I'm still dreamin' of that CP-7. Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-05-27 18:10

oldy -- please make absolutely sure to bring that cp-7 to florida --
we are much more selective and critical down here Smile

but still vaguely interested .

jimski - 2008-05-27 18:46

Great stuff ,meeting in person like this

jlf - 2008-05-27 19:45

Great collection and good times!

I need to get me a Rising now too!

A little competition for one makes it more fun anyway... so long as we dont bid ourselves stupid! Smile

ford93 - 2008-05-27 22:59

Great fotogs guys you even had the ladies styling and profiling with some boomers. Cool

retro.addict - 2008-05-28 09:47

All those boxes are looking really nice! Cool

My favourites are the Sanyo C9, JVC PC-550, Fisher PH-480 and the Rising. Smile Oh, I just noticed that Sharp GF-9696... yummy! Big Grin

erniejade - 2008-05-29 12:09

Nice man it looks like you all had a great time!

oldskool69 - 2008-05-29 13:41

We really did. Too bad it rained though. I had 24 alkaline D batteries and some C's for the Sansui CP-55 ready to go for a trip to the park and see how much noise we could make before the cops showed up. You see, while Bobby may get arrested as a local scofflaw, I'd just be another annoying tourist from Alabama and get sent home! Laugh Out Loud

fatdog - 2008-05-29 14:20

When boomboxes are outlawed, only outlaws will have boomboxes. Wink

oldskool69 - 2008-05-29 16:05

Hey Bobby, tell everyone your thoughts on the the boxes. Big Grin

I really like that Rising! Nice punch and clear. And that dial window was sweet with those led's backing it up. Nod Yes

The GF-777 was another nice one. Not as punchy as I hoped but loud and clear nonetheless. And what function does this box not have?! Laugh Out Loud

The 9696 is pure classic in looks and feel. Took me a second to get used to the cassette control layout but a solid unit for sure! Nice sound but somewhat middle of theroad compared to the Rising and 777. Smile

Not seen in the Pic was this MacDonald he has. This thing is LOUD! Not as good as the others but not a dissapointment either.

The Yorx 20/20 clone let me down after hearing the Rising. How can something so alike sound so different? Like the licks to finish a Tootsie Pop I guess we'll never know.

...just to throw a spanner in the works oldskool Wink, the GF-777 doesn't have Dolby NR. Big Grin And that's weird how you said about the 777 sounding clear, mine doesn't sound as clear as I'd hoped. Frown

Well, you DO have to sit five to six feet away directly in front of it. The way the tweeters are set back in a "horn" of sorts hurts the directional output. So you are correct when just sitting around it's not clear. But if you sit as you would between the speakers with your ears level to the speakers it is clear. Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-05-30 09:24

i could never manage to get my ears that level to the speakers --so mine got sold Smile

Do you play your boxes on the floor, rbj?

redbenjoe - 2008-05-30 09:55

R.A. -- whenever i get a jones to hear some bass --i do put them on the floor --

the only box i have that sounds good in any location is bose wave aw-1 --

and the kaboom has such huge bass that i never even tried it on the floor Smile

smokinendo - 2008-05-30 10:30

What a great thread and a great right up as a well. You all look like you had such a blast even the ladies Smile All those boxes in one place at one time gives me the Goosebumps LOL (just wanna turn em all up)

so who won the game of Bowling LOL

A few other little comments I wanted to make about some of the boxes mentioned... for starters the Rising is so sweet ! I love yours with the leds and it's part of the reason mine isn't reassembled yet LOL I drove 7 hours round trip to get it and I only got to hear it for like five minutes (I miss it already)

Second is the Yorx 20/20 the one that was in Bobby's old avatar with the 22/22 clings ?

Lastly I LOVE my 777 and I think it's VERY well built & you can't beat what I paid for it but... (put away the pitch forks and torches) I think it is way heavier and nicer looking then it sounds. I have to fiddle with all the knobs for a few just to get the best sound out of it and on certain tracks with lower frequency signals it just can't keep up. Just my .02 Smile

Great little get together guys... looks like fun

Brian

oldskool69 - 2008-05-30 17:49

Well, Bobby won both games. Please note I was bowling with someone elses ball and house shoes. I didn't bring mine. Plus I jumped staright off the intersate and into the alley. After a fresh night with my own bowling ball I could take him for sure! Laugh Out Loud

That Rising is sweet, but my CP-7 is sweeter and more powerful! Laugh Out Loud

fatdog - 2008-05-30 19:11

Freddie, you know what that sounds like?

Wahhh! Wahhh! Wahhh!

Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

jameswp67 - 2008-06-06 09:25
