What's the best sounding box on the today market?

hifitom - 2008-05-15 04:09

Hello

I just sold a Telefunken HP 800 hifi at ebay - this guy mailed me that he just lost his job and can't pay the limit of 400,- Euros (!) he bit on this boombox. I wrote him that this is a great ghettoblaster, but I think 400,- Euros are to much money for this (like the most of the HP 800 the tape needed a new belt). He bought such a Radio 25 years ago, now it's broken, and he wanted the same model again ...

I wrote him that there are a lot of great radios (with CD-players) are out there, and he should buy a new model.

So what do you think what is the best box at the moment on the market? The JVC boomblaster? ...

Thanks and best wishes
TOM

In just 2 words " Jvc Kaboom"..... Nod Yes Eek

tpr - 2008-05-15 05:26

I agree.

BUT:

fm reception very weak,
cassette drive very unsolid built.
ffd and rwd very slow.

I agree with Jens. If he needs a CD then you have to go back a bit because there are no good high quality boxes on the market now. I've heard the i931 (no cd anayway) and nope, not impressed.

I would say the closest he'll get is the Panasonic RX-DT series from the 93-97. They're fairly easy to find and sound incredible. Nod Yes

I will third that recommendation, I don't know of another boombox being made right now that performs nearly as well.

jcyellocar - 2008-05-15 08:06

Kaboom would be my first choice.

then this:

There is not much else out there.

Hands down the kaboom i agree with jens comments about it though.

What about Sony boomboxes? Are they not as good as kaboom? There are two models at my local electronics store that are in the $100-130 range - half of what kaboom costs, but I don't know how they sound....

bredgeo - 2008-05-15 09:27

Yap, yap yap.... KABOOM, for sure!!!!

Or if not, if you want some sweet sound.... that would be an egg making crackling sound whilst burning!

Big Grin Cool

The Kaboom models make a lot of noise, but not good overall sound. They are also overpriced.

This Sony Xplod model is much more reasonable on the wallet, and makes good overall sound.

Link to Best Buy.

They also make a slightly improved model with a larger woofer and one add'l sound preset, the CFD-G700CP.

vladi123456 - 2008-05-15 10:57

Ya, I was talking about the Xplod model by Sony - so it sounds about the the same as Kaboom?

No. I own both the original Kaboom with Cd and cassette and the Sony Xplod cfd-g700cp. I've had the Kaboom for 6+ years and it is my workout room sound system. I have a soft spot for it and thought it was perfect until I got the new Xplod a couple of weeks ago. The Kaboom has more bass than the Xplod but the sound is nowhere near as balanced. I was highly impressed with the new Xplod. Miles ahead of the previous version (the cfdg505). Beefy base, strong midrange and wonderfully clear tweeters. The speakers also seem to be perfectlly matched with the amplification. You can crank this sucker up all the way and you get no rattles or distortion on most kinds of music. I would never give up either of these new age boomers even though they get little to no positive play here at stereo2go. JVC, you've got a great design with the Kaboom but it could be improved with some dedicated tweeters. Sony, you've won me over with the new Xplod. So much so that I'm considering buying a second. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this product line in the future. For those of you wondering, I also have the new Lasonic i931. A neat box/ipod docking station. If you've gotta have one than why not get the i931? I've discovered that it can deliver some bass if you really crank it up and it is well balanced as well so there is little distortion but don't EVER think that it's in the same league (audio quality) as the Xplod or Kaboom.

Xplod CFD-G700CP

It's much bigger than it looks. Check out more pics on Amazon.

I've never heard one. I may be off base but you're not talking about a Panasonic rx-ED707 are you? Do you have a picture? ...and please, everyone, I'm not hip to anything unless it's in front of my face. Laugh Out Loud No experts here.

What a new egg, any info or picks on the rx ds707 would be great, as i cant find any info on the net.

redbenjoe - 2008-05-15 20:01

sorry -- my first error - ever Smile
it rx DT 707 --from the 90s

l.lopez - 2008-05-15 20:08

Smile That Sony is a nice one red Hmmm Razz

vladi123456 - 2008-05-15 20:28

DKD - thank you for your review! I have not heard either JVC nor Sony, but I was leaning towards Sony simply because it's half the price of JVC. And now I might actually get me one of those - in my opinion, the modern hi-end boxes sound pretty good - they just don't have the cool classic looks.....Big Grin

vladi, my sentiments exactlly. I Agree If you pick one of these up, let us know what you think. Smile

jcyellocar - 2008-05-15 21:01

Is the Kaboom being phased out? They are nowhere ot be found in my area anymore.

hifitom - 2008-05-15 23:29

Hello

Thanks for the infos - I also own a JVC Kaboom, the first one which was on the market. I was at my local electronic store just to pick up some speaker kable, when the saleman unpack it and turn it on the very first time. Than all the salemans came over and stand infront of this bbox. Me also. I ask him if there is a extern subwoofer on this thing, because I never heard such a great bumping bass and so loud & clear. Well, what should I say, I go out of the market with my cable and a JVC Kaboom. I'm a fan of the old JVC's PC, the black ones with the 3D-active bass, but they are not that loud (the bass is still on of the best I think).

I didn't hear about the Sony X-plode series, but I give them a "testdrive" the next time when I'm at my local electronic store ...

Thanks!
TOM

retro.addict - 2008-05-16 10:45

JVC Kaboom. No other portable can match that thumping bass. It's tremendous.

skippy1969 - 2008-05-17 12:19

I have the Sony Explode CFD G505 in my kitchen, and it sounds ok but the bass distorts easily (IMHO). But if you want BASS,get the Kaboom....... Nod Yes

Hello everyone,

I don'tknow if it's the best sounding actual boombox, but this is a great sounding unit:
http://www.sangean.com/product.php?model=WR-3&prod_id=43
aka Roberts:
http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/Products/DAB_radios/SOUND_23/index.htm
If you have the opportunity of listen it, I recomended Bass -1, Treble +4, 3D On

Not too much bass, but the sound is very clean, detailed and realistic.

And it's much pretty in real life that in the photos!

Best regards.
