Sony shipping weight wtf?!?!?

dkd - 2008-04-29 05:56

I'm currently tracking the shipment of a Sony CFD-G700CP boombox that I bought new from Amazon.
Sonystyle.com and other websites list the weight of the boombox as 17 pounds, 10 ounces or 17.6 pounds. UPS tracking says that the package weighs 41 Eek pounds . Does anyone know how this is even possible? Could there be 23 pounds of packing material? Thank the maker for free shipping!

No way, that thing is packed in a couple of pieces of styrofoam, last time I checked that stuff was light. They better check there scales. Roll Eyes

It arrived safe and sound today. The main box (22 pounds total) was packed in a bigger box with some wadded up brown paper. 41 pounds? Whatever. This thing (Xplod CFD-G700CP) is much bigger than it looks in the pic. It's nearly as deep as it is wide. The sound is phenomenal and has exceeded all of my expectations. A great leap ahead of last years CFD-G505. It's still kind of ugly though but I like the red. Well done Sony!

Shipping usually is charged on the weight OR the size of the box. If the box is big, but the weight is small they charge according to the size. 41 Lbs might be equiv shipping to the size of the larger box. I am having what is an almost empty box shipped to me from Canada and shipping is $60.... the same as if there was something actually IN the box...

Interesting... I guess that makes sense. For example I couldn't ship a 10 foot diameter bag of helium and expect to pay by weight. By shere volume I'd keep other freight off the truck, costing the shipper more. It really does make sense.
