hi all, im new to this forum and new to collecting ghetto blasters, got given one by someone at work which was broken but i got it workin, it was a sharp gf-4747 after this i was hooked, i was not around in the early 80's but i just love the cool styling and amazing clarity of the sound, since then i have bought a hitachi trk 8600 which i think is cool dunno how it ranks with the likes of conion though but it sounds good, it has a problem with the line in though it is 2 way phono/line but when set on line the sound is very quite and distorted that is the only fault, also own a hitachi trk 3d80e this one is not 80s though i think early 90s but i like the 4 speakers along the front shame they dont reflect the sound quality, and last a modern one that is probably the only one i have seen that rivals the quality of sound of the 80s stuff is the jvc rv-nb1 aka the boom blaster (kaaboom) this has bass that rivals my hi-fi but lacks the ability to play really loud even though it has 2x20w woofers 6.5" and 2x fullrange at about 4" are 10w so a totall 60w also has 4 way bi-amp with distortion prevention system so its clear full on but with less bass.

anyway i am enjoying reading about your collections there is some really cool stuff here.

masterblaster84 - 2008-04-10 09:23

Welcome to the forum X9moto and thanks for sharing your collection.

How are you feeding the line in on your 8600? Does the same setup work OK on the line in of your other boxes?

geoffhartwell - 2008-04-10 09:40

welcome x9moto this is a great place if you need advice on fixing bbox's, can we see some pics of your bbox's, great another collector in east anglia Wink

oldskool69 - 2008-04-10 10:52

Welcome aboard x9moto and to this crazy hobby. Since I would guess you are not into robbing banks, I suggest you choose carfully, invest wisely, and be sure to get those you really want. You can go broke fast if you get every cheap one, even a quality box cheap, and find yourself short when your ready to get "THE ONE". Big Grin

Welcome to the site!

x9moto - 2008-04-10 11:37

thanks, for the replies, in reply to master blaster yes the setup works on my other bbx, not sure what to think if i drop the levels a lot it works on phono but the bass is to high but thats normal when misusing phonos but then back to line and it very dead i would think it may be a drop resister faulting or possibly a cap that is directly linked to that area of the board as nothing else is effected but there is a ground terminal near the line in perhaps that could be it, did old line in gear have a separate ground? also hi to the others, i want to expand my collection so if you are in east anglia and have any cheapies doesnt have to work as long as its not a blown amp or something as i can repair most other faults, i may be interested, its mainly the middle to large stuff that i am most interested in expecially the one with the slot-in tape deck!

anyway heres some pics of what i have so far...

this is my hitachi twin drive (trk 3d80e)

this is my sharp gf4747 left and hitchi trk8600 right

a stack of my collection

this is my hitachi trk 8600

this is my kaboom still boxed

this is my sharp gf 4747

this is my sharp and hitachi happy together!

well thats the lot apart from my hi fi which is just a regular one nothing special so no point really bothering with a pic for that!

masterblaster84 - 2008-04-10 11:43

Sounds like you have a pretty good grasp of your problem With the 8600. With my fair but not great repair knowledge my first thought would agree with your bad cap assesment.

geoffhartwell - 2008-04-10 12:22

hi, geoffhartwell, are any of your bbxs big ones like the hitachi? im particularly wanting a crown jumbo, a sharp gf777, conion the one with the slide in tape deck (portable not hi-fi version) and maybe i will see some others i like but finding the ££££ is the tough bit as is the space to keep them, just been using the trk 8600 on battery hell does that eat em bout 20 mins on tape at quart volume!

i like the hitachi and the toshiba, but what is wrong with that jvc looks like a section missing from below the tape deck?

do you have a price in mind for each of them, if i new how much each one was i would have a better idea how many i would buy, thanks

x9moto - 2008-04-15 15:51

got 2 new boxes another of the 3d series, its one i have never come across before and is mint, its a trk 3d52e, and yet another hitachi trk 8300e.

i remember once at school there was a 3d series by hitachi that had the usuall front speakers but also had one on each end and it was twin tape deck, can anyone shed light on which one it was, and if anyone has one for sale in the uk let me know
