Rising 20/20

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 10:12

Drove seven hours round trip to pick this up yesterday, It needs few things but I'm pretty excited about it. The tuner lens is cracked, one aerial is broken off completely while the other is missing the tip, the tuner knob has some deep gouges, it's not getting any sound out of the deck and it's got an issue with the volume pots but after a good cleaning inside and out I think it will be killer box Smile

LMK what you guys think ?

retro.addict - 2008-04-08 10:17

Those 20/20's look cheaply made to me, but they're a nice shape. Despite those scratches on the tuning knob and above the RISING logo, your's looks like it will clean up okay. Good luck with the fix!

sinister - 2008-04-08 10:18

looks like it will clean up real nice man. thats a long trip. i have 2 of these rising and international

What do you think of the build quality, sinister? They looks solid, but a cheap, one piece mould with painted on chrome and no removable 'added on bits'.

sinister - 2008-04-08 10:25

looks wise i think there kool. inside very simple but a snap to work on. sound wise not a bad box

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 10:26

I have an international and rising.......they are the same box......just different plate and different color woofers.....

The build quality is NOT cheap, pretty rugged, but not superior either.....but I'd say top 80% of build quality

fatdog - 2008-04-08 10:40

Smokin' Endo, definitely bleach those woofers!! Search the Tech Talk section for my post on that. Also, you might want to consider upgrading the dial light to LEDs like myself and Kittmaster have done.

The Rising (and it's clones) are really underrated boxes. Mine gets used every single day while my other boxes just sit and stare with envy. Wink

oldskool69 - 2008-04-08 10:58

Seven hours! Eek Yep, clean her up real nice. I bet it's a peach and sure you got a whale of a deal on it. Congrats! Big Grin

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 11:00

Thanks guys I've been cleaning it for the better part of the day and it's coming along nice but I'm thinking of taking it apart for a GOOD CLEANING....It really needs it and if I plan to bleach the speakers I'll have to take it apart anyway LOL

I'll take some pics when I'm finished and maybe start a wanted thread. Are there a lot of these floating around where I may be able to local the missing/broken parts ? I guess I'm wondering if it's a common box ?

Thanks Again guys

Thanks Wink

would it come off as boasting if I told the story ?

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 11:03

Well, I'll just say follow the leader if you really mean you want give it a "good" cleaning......Wink

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 11:12

Is that submerged or just sitting in the tub and is there a chemical you guys bath the boards in to clean them (probably a stupid question)

Nope! We all find stuff at ridiculously low prices and it's always interesting to hear how each of us did it. Smile

sinister - 2008-04-08 11:21

i found a helix c 100 for 40 bux Big Grin

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 11:55

OK then here goes Wink

I'll start this weekend cause it plays a part.

Saturday and Sunday I usually do my thing without the kids and wife in the morning be it a flea-market, yard sales, or some early morning BMX bike riding but this weekend was our 13 year anniversary (from the day we got together not our wedding) and I was planning to devote myself to my wife and kids for the whole weekend. Take a brake from the normal activity and tend to there every need LOL

Anyway when Monday came around I was thinking that it had been a while since I checked out what's up on Craig's list. I checked out Philly (nothing) Checked out Jersey (nothing) Delaware (nothing) I was about to give up when I decided to check DC for some reason ? I really don't check out CL in areas I can't drive to, it just seems like a scam to people when you ask them to ship an item that will cost more to ship then they actually want for it.

Anyway I see an ad on DC Craig's list that reads "80's Boombox Ghetto Blaster Rising 20/20" and it was listed on Saturday when we were celebrating our anniversary and I was no where near a computer. I kind of giggled and thought "OK that's LONG gone". I would've probably forgotten all about it if the guys # wasn't listed in the sale thread but I said what the heck and called him anyway.

No Answer ! Oh Whelp it's gone

2 hours later the guy calls me back. Now in his ad it said $30 or "Best OFFER" so I figured at this point it was a collector who was fishing for prices or seeing what he could get without using eBay. I said... So I see you asking $30 or best offer ? I'm sure you've got a bunch of offers on your lap, what am I looking at to get on the list ? He laughs and says List ?... 2 guys emailed me and offered $20 for it, if you want it come get it and it's yours.

This was at around 1:00pm and I was exchanging PM's with the Fuzz so I told him I might be scoring one. I wanted to leave then because it was going to be a 3 hour drive each way and I would have to drive passed/through 4 major cities including our nations capital DC. The guy with the 20/20 wouldn't be available till after 6 pm and he had to pick the radio up at his mom's place 30 minutes away ! This meant I couldn't leave my house till 3:00pm and I wouldn't be home till at least 10:00pm if everything worked out OK on the road.

After a grueling 3 and half hour drive I meet him at 7:00pm. I talked to him for a few minutes and told him that the box was worth way more then what he was asking and that I wanted to give him at least $50 or $75 and he refused. He said that he was happy to see it go to someone who will love it like he did for all those years and only accepted the $30 asking price

I was ecstatic Smile and I don't think I hurt his financial situation as he drove off in a brand new BMW

sorry it was so long but for the story to be interesting I had to tell you every detail LOL

Thanks Guys

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 12:12

completely submerged

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 12:15

What's it in Kitt ? and don't say "the Tub" LOL

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 12:57

"the tub"

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 12:58

1/4 tub full of water, 1 full bottle of ISO.

masterblaster84 - 2008-04-08 13:02

Nice box S/E, you must have really wanted one to drive 7 hours. That tops my longest trip by about an hour. They are a good box but not the best as far as quality but definitely a keeper. Nod Yes

smokinendo - 2008-04-08 13:36

OK I deserve that Kitt Razz but what is ISO and where do I get me some Big Grin

MB I love it more every time I look at it and we (the wife and I) just listened to it for the first time and we love the bass, nice clean sound when it catches a signal but I need to get some new aerials. The deck cleaned up well but I need to test it with a cassette. Oh and I'll be keepin as many as she'll let me LOL

fatdog - 2008-04-08 13:52

That's a fantastic story, Endo! I wish I could get that lucky on Craigslist. Roll Eyes

ISO is isoproply alcohol.

If you need new belts for the Rising, here's some info:

FBS9.0 Flat Belt - Small $0.99 ea.
SBO5.0 Square Belt - Other $0.79 ea.

I ordered my belts from Studio Sound Electronics.

You could actually go just a tad smaller for a slightly tighter fit.

redbenjoe - 2008-04-08 14:17

GREAT story endo -- love the part that the seller knew it was worth alot more -- thats cool --

if youre lucky -- that dial glass may be replaced with a $5.00 piece of plexi from home depot --

jaredscottfla - 2008-04-08 17:00

awesome story,i am green with envy! Congrats def worth the grinding drive! Cool

Wow I did'nt know you could actually dip the boards in water and ISO, but won't the water corrode the metals on the boards?

By the way congrats on your 20/20 Smokin_Endo long drive, but you are a true boombox fan! Nod Yes

transamguy1977 - 2008-04-08 20:00

Nice score!!!
Mine is in a million pieces awaiting restoration Wink

kittmaster - 2008-04-08 20:25

that is what the ISO does, its displaces water for faster dry time......and 30 minutes won't corrode anything, mostly for dirt and grime seperation.....it takes the elements and time to corrode metal, remember that most components have conformal coating on the metal to keep this from happening.

arkay - 2008-04-08 21:06

Great find with an enjoyable story. Way to go! Seven hours is a long drive for a box, but for one that special, it's worth it. You "earned" the box, and it will repay you with years of pleasure. Enjoy it, and thanks for sharing it.

ash25 - 2008-04-08 22:27

Long drive Endo, but I would have done the same. Not like these come along everyday. I have 1 also, and its a nice box. I think you will like it. Congratulations.

charlesdickens - 2008-04-09 08:31

Nice Rising! They are solid and tough as nails! No cheapness there at all!

hey kitt how big is the bottle you mix in with.

smokinendo - 2008-04-09 11:23

Thanks for all the great comments guys Smile I took some of your advice and here it is

I still need to get the tuner lens out but I may just leave it for now ?

Fatdog thanks for hooking me up with all the links and info, any idea where I can get some ISO ?

So Kitt, does this mean I'm down by Law or do I have to get it back together and working before you'll show me the secret hand shake LOL

Frank did you ever end up getting your tuner lens out ? How did you do it ?

Thanks Again guys

kittmaster - 2008-04-09 11:27

the size you'd get from CVS or any drug store > size of hydrogen peroxide

fatdog - 2008-04-09 11:37

Endo, go out and get you some PlastX plastic polish at any auto parts store. It's made by Meguiars. It'll polish up the dial lens and cassette door quite nicely - although it won't fix the crack. Wink

smokinendo - 2008-04-09 11:57

Thanks Again Fatdog, I usually just use car wax but I need to get a plastic polish I never even thought about it. Believe it or not that's not a crack just a deep gouge and I was considering removing it and sanding out the gouge then polishing the lens back but it's pretty deep. Would you leave it alone or try to do something with it ?

The bleach is working but I think I'm going to have to take a Q-tip and do the backs. They are coming up white but with orange showing through from the back. again what do you think ? LOL

fatdog - 2008-04-09 13:07

There are orange stains on the backs of the woofers? Confused

I'd probably leave the dial lens just where it is and polish it as well as I could. Trying to get it out might do more damage - not only to the dial lens, but to the box casing.

After you get it all back together, give it a good wipe all over with some OrangeGlo. Not a lot. Just light mist a clean rag and wipe. You'll be surprised at the grime OrangeGlo can take off that soap and water can't. Nod Yes

Oh, and we'll need lots of pictures!! Big Grin

smokinendo - 2008-04-09 13:40

ha ha I know that will help out when it comes to the back of the cabinet and all the brown (nicotine) stains

Yup orange stains everywhere Frown

Here is where I'm at with the speakers

I've only started on the one but I did it front and back and it needs to dry before I can hit it with round two. Will that orange stains ever go away or should find a happy medium ?

Fatdog I can't thank you enough all this help is greatly appreciated

transamguy1977 - 2008-04-09 15:17

Maybe give it a shot with some white shoe dye.
Bleaching is not going to get all of the staining off.
Be careful not to go over it too much as the bleach could potentially weaken the paper.
I did my clairtone 20/20 speakers with the bleach and they came out decent but they werent as stained as yours.
Luckily my Rising speakers are in nice shape
