Today's catch: Kings Point

big.beat - 2008-03-30 08:44

Kings Point PS-410, made in Japan. Has some issues, both tapes don't work and one screw broken on the bottom corner. But otherwise clean, loaded with features (4 band shortwave, line-in, wide stereo, LED's, metal tape switch, etc.) and the radio sounds pretty good. Looks like a fairly good quality box. Even came with a period shoulder strap attached. Not bad for a garage sale find.

Questions: how old is this thing, and what exactly is "Kings Point"? Never heard of the brand, a search of this forum brings up only one passing mention. Was it perhaps also available under a better known alias? Anyone here has any other Kings Point boxes?

Nice garage sale find and not a bad box from what I understand. I've Never heard of Kings Point either however that particular box has been rebranded more times than I can count. Jens can probably give you an idea of just how many rebrands their are.

kings point is a trademark (no manufacturer)
see aka models: Wink

Wow Smile Thanks!

I figured it would be a stencil/ house brand of some kind, but while some of the others I have at least heard of (Sankei, Ken-Tech, etc.), I have never seen another Kings Point.

I notice the Toshiba variant. Was Toshiba the manufacturer of these for all the other house brands?

One more question... I'll probably end up selling this one after I play with it for a while. I usually do that as soon as I find something else, just to keep the overall number down. What would be a fair price to ask for it, considering the tape decks don't work? Is $100 too much?

Oh, and if anyone has any other Kings Point boxes, I still wanna see the pics Smile

Kings Point was a brand that was active in the early to mid 1980's.
I t was a common find in cosumers warehouse and a flea market brand as well.
The quality was hit or miss.
The importer was based in New York and sourced their products from several OEM's.
Toshiba and Sampo were the main OEM at that time.
I had a Kings point stereo console and the FCC ID showed it was sourced from Sampo.
Just google the FCC ID on the boombox and you should get the manufacturer, if not then it may be guess.
Also, if it was sourced from Toshiba does not mean that it had the same QC
Electronics like this were sourced to the lowest bidder and corners were cut to turn a profit.

Not bad for a one piece. I wonder what the soung quality is like? Smile

FCC ID is cg28ux410-83. Google doesn't find it.

The black and gold version in the top row is an amazing looking box!

Reminds me of the old John Player Special race cars and bikes....
