Conion C-100 vs JVC RCM-90 review

transamguy1977 - 2008-03-18 18:26

Disclaimer,
This comparison is purely for entertainment purposes.
My personal perspective has been used to analyze both of these boxes.
Everyone perceives sound differently so judge for your self to be safe Smile I have tried to be as thorough in comparing the two by using different genres of music
and comparing deck and tuner quality.

After the battle I decided I love them both.
If I could only keep one though Id have to say it would be the Conion C-100.

Conion C-100 IS THE Winner !!!!

kittmaster - 2008-03-18 18:37

If the conion didn't have the tweeters covered by all that plastic, there would be a lot more clarity. I think the M90 is a bit more balanced since it can extend out to 18Khz.

Both boxes are must haves.....great comparison!

What deck did you use while testing the CF-100, or both decks shields the same performance. I don't know the unit ...
Test was only about sound quality, or it included others like functionality, design, control layout, rated output power, built quality ... and so on ...

I've never seen an M90 also. Both looks excelent products.

transamguy1977 - 2008-03-18 18:54

I used the lower deck on the Conion for the comparison as I feel it was the better sounding of the two decks
I like the layout of the Conion better than the M 90
I think it is simpler even though it has two decks.
build quality is about the same on both.
Internally I think the JVC seems kind of over built compared to the Conion . the boards are bigger and alot more complex. especially the tuner board.
Sorry I didnt cover a whole lot on the videos I am limited to a 5 minute video upload and they take forever to upload.
about 40 minutes approximately.
It took a great deal of time to put this together but if anyone else has any questions just shoot em out and I will try my best to answer them

i think basically these two are the kings of the one piece boxes ,i dont think in general that one is better than the other just different its like alien vs predetor you just have to choose one or both cos its hard to lose either way.altho there are some pretty scary 3 piece boxes that could teach both the m90 and the conion some repect.ive made this comparison many times my best advice is to just get both boxes.

8 bands of shortwave tuning plus AM/FM will do that...... Wink

Yeah, CF100 layout looks more clear.
The M90 looks complex and full of controls ... Anyway a prefer the M90 overall look ... advanced by the year it was released ...

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-18 19:19

What??? Transamguy has lost it, ban him now!!! Laugh Out Loud

Only kidding, Wink that was a great and very informative comparison. They really do sound quite a bit different. I actually liked the thicker sound of the Conion, I guess I'm going to have to get one and do my own comparison now. Thanks transamguy for making me spend more money!

Is there such a thing as a boombox patch to ween me off this habit?

both are at the very top of the mountain. if you don't have at least one or both of these models your collection is never going to be complete No No

appleknocker - 2008-03-18 19:36

Very nicely done, TA - this is another great contribution to the group. I really enjoyed your videos all the way through. I have both of those also and I thought all your tests and comments were right on point. As you said, it comes down to a personal preference in the end and I can certainly see how anyone could go either way between these two. For me, it would be the m90 as my winner.

kittmaster - 2008-03-18 19:40

Also keep in mind that camera microphones will severely affect the appearance of sound even though clearly there is a discernable difference between the two boxes.......both a A1 in my book from first hand experience.......

gee i had no idea that if you click the pic that a movie would play ....

redbenjoe - 2008-03-18 21:37

you are one good hard worker TA --thanks for the nice demo.

a few times you mentioned how well they both sound together --
and wondering if other members also do play various box combos - just to hear a more balanced sound ?

since its late at night - and no one is reading this --let me admit that i often hide my kaboom under a table -- turn the base to the max. at low volume --

and then add a nice mini or medium box ---

and then i go -- WOW Smile

Your not getting off that easy Ira, I'm still here but not for long. Big Grin

So we need an Uber hybrid box and we'll call it a JVConion M190F. Nod Yes

weylandyutani - 2008-03-18 21:54

Yep D man I hear YA!!!!! still great comparison dre4aming over owning either!!!! Still way down in New zealand Im hoping theres a lot of untapped garage workshop boomboxes waiting to be passed on!!!! Number 3 box on the way!!! Nod Yes

thafuzz - 2008-03-18 22:04

Great job Frank! I, like many others, have never been fortunate enough to hear both/either one live. I wish I had both. I DO like the richer, deeper sound of the Conion. Well done- and great songs too Wink

arkay - 2008-03-19 08:14

I have tended to like the M90 better, but that's probably because my (best) M90 is in much better shape than my (slightly damaged) C100F. The Conion does grow on one, though, and it sure is a BEAST of a boombox! Haven't done a direct A/B sound comparison yet; it wouldn't be fair anyway, until the Conion is fixed up, so your video was interesting/helpful. Guess the conclusion others have reached is right: have to have/keep BOTH! Big Grin

skippy1969 - 2008-03-19 08:52

Great Video Frank. I really love seing both grail doing battle. Awesome!!!!! Big Grin

beatbox - 2008-03-19 09:30

Great videos!!

Thanks for making and sharing.

ford93 - 2008-03-19 09:45

Very good comparison on both C100 and M-90, I wish JVC would have done something more with the casing of the M-90. I believe the M-90 has good bass if you hear on the rear side of the M-90 you'll really get the feel of it. The C100 has good sound but I Agree if the tweeter section would have better it would have been a well built boombox. They are both still a must have in a collection.

retro.addict - 2008-03-19 10:07

I love the first video transamguy! Cool You compare boxes like I do, keep adjusting the bass and turning the volume down on one and up on the other and vice versa! Nod Yes I put the boxes side by side, not one on top of the other like you do. Great idea! ...I just wish I had an M90. The Conion seems to be lacking tweeter grilles, whereas the M90's are very prominent. For looks, I've got to say I like the M90 much more. It looks better thought out and perfectly balanced. That's a great review. Thanks for sharing. Cool
