My mutant box!*UPDATE*

kid.sensation - 2008-03-15 10:18

Well i was thinking about selling boomers to be ready for my move in may.One of the ones i wanted to give away was my Stereo Sonic ( the boltbox-aka ).
Well, looking at it made me sad.Allways hard to part with a boombox!

It had some issues. After i fixed one speaker the other one went mad and played tricks on me.And the list continues.

Well as i have a beater Pana A2 around too i thought:
"Heck, why not!"

So i stripped down the Sonic completely, customized the case and put that damn big and strong Pana-speakers in it.
After some adjustment they and the tweeters were a perfect match and i was happy Smile

having done this it was clear that the rest of the inner parts would never fit again..Well most of them barely even worked before so i cut them also to get small pieces for the important parts like knob-attachments or the switches.( I know a bad thing to do..but not that bad on dead parts Big Grin )

I contacted NED for some expertise on which amp to use..He hooked me up with some information and is now on to contact the guy who is able to build small and good amps.

Well i sat down, looking at it and the next thought came to my mind.

If i put in the speakers of a Pana A2, why not connect them to the old main-unit?

So i connected everything and started it.( main-unit of the pana covered behind some stuff to hide the real deal haha!)

And oh my god!these speakers do not even look mad in the Stereo Sonic they also sound like that!

Im now on my way thinking about some other modifications in this one, like some LED's and maybe analog VU's ( oh and did i mentioned my beater Pana..It will play a major role now! ).

I also thought about placing a little screen instead of the tape-door.But i think that's a job i couldn't do and would be too much for the first project.

so in the end, once finished, it will be a nice and powerful MP3-unit.

The first shots of the beast..after i put in the speakers:

I will insert the Mp3-Player here so that you can hide it but to be also able to navigate it easily ( i will modify the old part or may build a new with grill/s:

the empty body:

Writing this im listening to LL Cool J - I need Love ( and yes!I still like that song ) and the mutant box plays it like NO OTHER.

That said i know that it is running over the bass/treble-controls from the pana..and it may not have them after im done. That's why im thinking to maybe insert some inner parts of the A2 to keep that sound or iÄll see what to do.

I hope i can update this whole thread with some new stats on the project soon!hope i'll find some time for this baby.
I have the feeling that this one will be one of my biggest favourites after im done Smile

Just wanted to share this Wink

I was really surprised about the nice and mad look after changing the woofers.

I will contact a mate who knows nearly everything about car-electronics..And i hope he can help with some small extras for my boomer or simply can assist in general when it comes to custom LED's or connecting this and that Cool

P.S. I don't generally swear on this forum so apologies. It's the radios fault. It's really intimidating and I can hear it's crazed voice in my head...

Laugh Out Loud me laughed too Laugh Out Loud

but indeed, them A2 speakers make it really look mad!In reality its kinda more evil.

A small Update by the way:

I just got a reply to my question about the amp.The guy will build me one like brian used for his 20/20.I do not have any time-pressure on this so it may take a while until i can hook it up with the amp and crossover.

Since this will take some time im now thinking about some other cool mods Big Grin

here are two pictures of the amp, stolen from NED's thread about his modded 20/20:

Im glad that i have the oppurtunity to get such a small amp as there is not much space left due to the big ass speakers Big Grin

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-17 10:17

thats wicked kid ,let us know how it turns out ,

retro.addict - 2008-03-17 11:24

Those RX-A2 speakers look MEEAAANN, KS! Eek

You may need to fit some dynamat to the final product when it's finished to stop cabinet vibration! Big Grin

kid.sensation - 2008-03-20 10:09

Ok..the guy from the netherlands ned lead me in contact with is absolutely fast! Eek

here is a first quick pic of my upcomming amp:

he bought some good input caps ( the red ones ) to improve the sound a little bit Smile

I guess if he continues in this speed i'll have it soon Big Grin

ned.209 - 2008-03-20 10:35

where are you getting the crossovers Kid?

kid.sensation - 2008-03-20 13:02

Ned, i thought about ebay in the first moment.

But after looking up and seeing all them different kinds and me beeing a noob on this i considered i will go to my local profi-electronic store.

the guys there do have a own big area just for speakers and other parts.

I may ask there which one to use for the best results and maybe they can come up with a good one.

Beside that, maybe you got the experience to help me finding the perfect crossovers?Smile

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-20 13:11

hey kid could you use the filter parts from the rx a2 speaker boxes in the mutant box it would save you alot of work.

kid.sensation - 2008-03-20 13:15

hey floyd.sorry but i do not really understand you?

which "filter-parts" do you mean?

Are you in the thought of using one of the circuit-boards that controls bass and treble?

If so..the whole main-unit is a mess to take apart..It took me hours and finally i recognized that it would never work out to use one of these parts Frown

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-20 13:21

yeah kid i meant that mess of wires inside the speaker cabinets that the woofers and tweeters are connected to ,usually there are passive crossover parts installed on the speakers already you could transfer that to the other box ,i never looked inside the cabinets on the rx 6400 i had so i have no clue if the passive crossover parts are in there ,just thought i would make the suggetion.ma bad,lol

kid.sensation - 2008-03-20 13:26

ok i do understand now floyd!

Until now i did the exact same what you told.

I simply opened the A2-cabinets, took out the speaker and tweeter with all wires and placed into the mutant box.

Like placing human brain or a heart into Dr. Frankensteins monster Smile

anyway..i do not know if there are passive crossovers in there..The wires just lead from the speakers to the single chinch-output to connect to the main-unit.

I guess I'll have a try once the amp arrives.

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-20 13:32

great work kid! Wink

kid.sensation - 2008-03-21 09:46

ok..i did not counted how many times i opened it up, put everything together to see that i did something wrong or missed something.

Anyway..we are getting some process to the look.

VU and Tuner-scale added again.

Oh and i thought i need some protection to the speakers.Do not want to damage them accidently or in use later.

straight horizontal bars were too common in my eyes..so see the pics what i put on this sucker jam!:

closeup of the VU and tuner-scale

the beast spitting out the wires

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-21 09:48

that looks great kid ,may the funk be with you .!

beatbox - 2008-03-21 11:26

Holy Shamoly!!!!

kid.sensation - 2008-03-26 09:47

well well..I was surfing through the net and searched for Disco-attachments.
Like nice LED's or things that might give it a nice kick when played in the night.

I sold my discolight-box long ago and regret it ( as allways when you sell a boomer )..So i want a good sounding discobox again Big Grin

Besides one plan for the bars i decided to add a mirror-tunnel instead of the tapedeck.
I wont cut anything to be able to add the deck later if i want.
I guess this will be pretty kick ass in the night if you look to your radio and actually look into an endless tunnel of lights in the centre which actually moves too Big Grin

Similar to this:

Link

There is a small video on the right which explains my thoughts roughly.( Flash Player needed )
Of course no cam can take the real "lenght" of the tunnel..It's an impressive thing in real-life.

Let's see Wink

appleknocker - 2008-03-26 14:12

way to go - KS - this is a cool thread

thafuzz - 2008-03-26 15:50

http://www.party-lichteffekte.de/product_info.php?products_id=1319 I'm digging your whole concept KS. It'll look and sound wicked. Keep it going.

jlf - 2008-03-26 20:04

Im late to the party...

I think it looks great!

As any casual walk through the BBDB will show, weird is wonderful!

Great project! Great thread!

eghost - 2008-04-03 12:41

any more news on this box kid?

I like the look of this project.

kid.sensation - 2008-05-09 06:18

I just got the amp some days ago in the mail.

Simply an amazing thing.

Now i need to buy some batteries/akku to deliver the power to it.

In the moment im thinking of buying a whole new set of speakers.I got problems with the ones installed now..And after some running one of the tweeters died too.

I may stick with some nice and kickass looking things ayeah Cool Big Grin

Here is the amp:

Now i have enough room for ideas with this extremely small amp!Cool

Can't wait to finally test it!

charlesdickens - 2008-05-09 07:28

WOW! AMAZING! I may have to try something like this myself. Great job.

smokinendo - 2008-05-09 08:03

Cool Vision you have going there KS I hope it all works out and you end up with exactly what you've been planning from the beginning. Sorry to hear about the problems with the speakers but if you made it this far I'm pretty sure you'll work it out

Can't wait to see it all buttoned up.

I say load it up with lights if at all possible, I mean if your doing a custom I'd go all out

PS I think you picked the perfect case to start with as I agree it does have an evil look to it

Good Luck with it all
