Lot of work needed on this beauty

fuzzyduck - 2008-03-13 14:55

Found this poor babe at the dump, one of the best looking BBXs IMO. Eek Eek

Cosmetically not too bad apart from a scrape on one side and some small dents under the deck buttons which I'll fill in and repaint. The radio works fine except FM due to the missing aerial and the other controls are all good including the DSL function, it sounds excellent. Smile

Mechanically it's a wreck, I actually left it at the dump but decided to go back for it later only to be told that an exporter had took it. Luckily it was the guy I know from this thread here so I went and picked it up from his house this morning. Cool
It's going to be a major project with which I'll need some help especially regarding repairing the back where the aerial goes in as there's nothing there to fix it to. Why would some idiot want to cut this away? Confused Confused

Issues found so far...
Belts melt away when touched.
Deck motor dead.
Aerial and wire missing with plastic surround cut away.
Cord on soft eject broken and missing.
Four screws missing from the back and one screw post broken.
One screw missing from the handle.

I stripped and cleaned the front this afternoon,(looks really cool with the grills off) and will paint it tomorrow as I need to get some paint plus some newspapers to cover the wall of my bathroom which I use as a makeshift spray booth lol! Big Grin

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-13 15:08

skippy1969 - 2008-03-13 15:12

Great find Fuzzy !!!!!! The CS660 is one of my favorites. I fact I just bought a minty fresh on from Redbenjoe. Let me know if you need a deck motor. I my have one,I'm not sure which one it takes. I have a few motors taken off from junkers, and a couple are from older Aiwas.Big Grin

Congrats Fuzzyduck the 660 is a great boombox IMO. Nod Yes

jlf - 2008-03-13 18:00

yeah congrats! I really like that box, especially the blue color.

arkay - 2008-03-13 19:49

Congratulations on a beautiful (if somewhat abused) box. Have to admire the way you went back and chased it down after the other guy got it first, and then taking on the challenge of fixing it back up again - wow! You'll enjoy it twice as much after it's all fixed up, because you'll have "earned it". Plus you are doing a good thing to keep one more of these old beauties alive. Well done!

WOW thanks Skippy, that'll be a great help to me! Here's a pic of the motor.
Cool Cool

Thanks guys!
Arkay, I kept thinking about it when I left it there the first time and just had to go back for it. The exporter guy actually said he'd picked it up just for me, what a sweetie! Big Grin

I started work on fixing the damage to the front casing today, filling in the dents and giving it a coat of primer ready for painting tomorrow. More pics to follow soon. Smile

mafiagato - 2008-03-14 13:02

skippy1969 - 2008-03-14 16:17

Hey Fuzzy,I think I found a motor that will work for you. it has a 12 volt rating and the size similar to yours. It's the closest type I have to yours. You can have it for free, just pay the postage if you are interested.[URL= ]

appleknocker - 2008-03-16 18:42

So far - so great! Excellent work again

kittmaster - 2008-03-16 18:45

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-16 19:47

Wow, I had no idea how bad the Aiwa belts melted. This is good information to hang onto, I have several Aiwa's to repair.

By the way nice work so far. Nod Yes

Thanks again folks. Smile
Skippy, that disgusting stuff went everywhere but luckily some babywipes got it off my hands. I wonder what ingredient in those belts made them go like that. It must have sent thousands of these beauties to an early grave. Mad Mad

Thanks Kittmaster, I've never heard of Windex, I guess it's an American product.

I bought the flat main belt today, I already have the other two in my spares box.

skippy1969 - 2008-03-18 05:22

Aiwa belts are the worse. They all seem to turn to tar with age,YUKKIE!!!!! Mad Red Face

isolator42 - 2008-03-19 03:34

I somehow feel Daiwa will be along at some point.
Great work, as ever Fuzzy. It'll be great when it's finished - all worth it Smile

skippy1969 - 2008-03-19 05:27

Looks great Fuzzy! What color and brand of paint did you use?

daiwa - 2008-03-19 06:00

Rightchoo are there Iso, just finishing up my last week of the term, have to proctor all my finals and complete all requirements for my two masters classes. Sunday, I collapse!! (plus the gones is playing in Colo. Springs tonight with the all girl band, Rocket, fresh off their appearance at SXSW) I'm one busy puppy.

BUT, not too busy to give Fuzzy her props! Another great save Amanda, and certainly, a box I would someday love to have! There are so many great restos' going on right now, with Franks new Rising project, this 660, damn, keep'em coming folks! We will SAVE THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! Big Grin

Thanks, I'm sure I can find something very similar to that. Cool

Skippy,
I used this stuff, as you can see it's a bit sparkly but not too bad.

Just waiting for the motor kindly offered by Skippy then I'll put this babe back together and (hopefully) fix the aerial.

skippy1969 - 2008-03-19 16:45

Thanks Fuzzy!!!! Big Grin

ronster - 2008-03-20 13:24

Awesome work so far Fuzzy - many would not have attempted it! looking forward to seeing this one finished off! Is the cassette mechanism easy to work on - I have a fear of these Aiwas since I looked inside my 990...

skippy1969 - 2008-03-20 18:46

I don't blame you Ronster, those Aiwa TPR'S are some of the worst units to work on from Aiwa. Frown

Thanks Ronster, the 660 deck isn't too bad to work on as the metal back cover over the belts is screwed on. Smile

happy - 2008-03-21 15:19

A great find fuzzyduck, now thats what i call a proper restoration job cummin along nice i like the look without the grills on.
Lookin forward to more pics when finished.
Happy Smile

fuzzyduck - 2008-03-31 14:18

OK, update time!
The replacement motor from Skippy arrived this morning, it's now been put in and works fine. He also sent me an original aerial post, thanks Skippy! Big Grin Cool Cool

The pause function doesn't work. I checked the microswitch and its wiring but it's all intact so I've no idea what's wrong.
All that's needed now is to paint the badly scratched tuning knob and fix the plastic around the aerial post, I've no idea how I'm going to do that though!

skippy1969 - 2008-03-31 14:32

Sounds like you might need to buy some kind of plastic filler like JB weld or something like it. Then re drill the hole to the size if the stud. When you engage the pause on you deck,do the linkages attached to the pause button move? I'll take a look at my CS880 deck as it is easy to look at right now,and see if I might know what might be wrong with yours. I'm glad the motor and stud made it to you ok,and the motor works. Wink

fuzzyduck - 2008-03-31 14:53

Skippy, I might try using some of my Plastex, it stinks to high heaven though Eek.

I cannot see anything moving at all when I press the pause button other than a tiny square peg pushing on the microswitch. Frown

fuzzyduck - 2008-04-03 12:18

Well damn, just finished repairing the aerial surround, fitted the antenna and connected it up to the tuner board (pics soon) but the FM band is dead, all the others work fine. I assumed at the beginning this was due to the missing aerial.
This thing has more faults than any BBX I've ever worked on before! Mad

I would follow Skips suggestion and use the JB Weld if they sell it over there. This is what we use over here to repair engine blocks so you know it's almost bulletproof. Big Grin

skippy1969 - 2008-04-03 16:42

Maybe you could try cleaning the tuner band selector switch. It's worth try. Roll Eyes

fuzzyduck - 2008-04-04 12:44

The volume control had a load of static so I cleaned everything previously, I'll give the band switch another go though. It's one of those crappy long things with practically no access to get any cleaner into.

The deck is actually jammed in pause mode but RW and FF work fine so I'll have a look at it again tomorrow. Looks like I'll have to take it apart, something I'm really not looking forward to! Frown

For the pic-hungry folks. Smile

Repair to aerial surround using a piece of card as a base...

With the Plastex added and left to fully harden for a day

All done. I used some model paint but couldn't get an exact match with the surrounding plastic but it's fairly close.

oldskool69 - 2008-04-04 14:01

Nice work! That's the fun part of this hobby is meeting challenges. And I'm sure only your mother would know the difference in the colors where the repair is. Smile

skippy1969 - 2008-04-04 14:59

Looking great Fuzzy! Keep up the good work! Eek Big Grin

fuzzyduck - 2008-04-05 12:18

Oldskool69,
I wish my mother lived near enough to see it, she's never seen any of my BBXs let alone the repairs lol! Eek

I fixed the jammed pause mechanism after dismantling the deck. The yellow lever (bottom left of pic) had somehow become dislodged and popped out when I took the cover off.

Deck with covers removed.

The FM band is still dead despite more cleaning, I'm guessing it's something to do with why the aerial was removed. SW works well with the new aerial but not without it so it could be a fault on the tuner board somewhere affecting the FM only.
