Couple Noob question

smokinendo - 2008-03-12 06:39

OK like you guys don't already know I'm new to the site and I have a few boxes but I want to ask a few questions that I had about them ?

Maybe you guys can help ?

1st ? On my GF777 should my tuner bar illuminate when powered up ? When I press the VU Meter/light switch down it turns the VU meters to a battier gauge and illuminates. I was wondering if it should light up all the time ? IF when I push it down if it should turn the lights on till I shut them off or if they are working properly and only come on when you are looking at the battery strength ?

2nd ? On my Lloyds unit there seems to be a problem with the decks ? Both of them work to an extent. When I press play they will play in either deck but at a high rate of speed ? Almost like it's on music search ? Maybe you know exactly what's up with it I'm lost ?

3rd ? Voltage selection ? I have a few boxes with this feature ? I'm guessing it's for other countries that have a similar style plug but use 220 instead of 110 ? I know when we use that kind of current we need a different style plug. If they do use 220 in another country do they use the same plug that we are familiar with ?

4th ? and this is just a basic consensus... How many boxes do the majority of the members here have ? There aren't too many pics (a lot more discussion which is all good) and I'm curious if most have 1-5 boxes, 5-20 boxes, 20-50 boxes, 50-100+ boxes

I know this one will be all over the place but I still want to know more about you guys & where I fit in ? Probably no where LOL

It's just that I have over 40 BMX bikes and I'm a pretty big collector in that respect but want to know if this is going to get very addicting like the bikes and old Chevy's were LOL

Thanks in advance guys Smile Just looking for some good conversation

plugs are different. theres 110v in north and south America, 220v in Europe, 100v in Aisa.

two pin plugs on America, in Ireland and England 3 pin, and 2 pin in Europe to the best of my knowledge.

on the box thing, speaking for myself, i had upwards of 20, but as time goes by ive whittled it down to 8, and thatll go down to 4 by this summer, because A. i only love certain ones, and B. im not settled yet so 20 is unrealistic. im sure settled people will view it differently, though i dont see the point of having that many boxes. ive given most of my midsized ones away to friends who will use them, rather than them sitting in a cubbard collecting dust, neglected, which is what happened to mine. those units are much happier now.

on the other hand it is nice to see and feel the boxes youve only ever seen in photos, so i feel enriched that way, id say.

smokinendo - 2008-03-12 08:14

Thanks for replying Ned Smile I figured that the plugs would have to be different but was unsure

As for the size of peeps collections I get that too. I have way too many bikes and you can only ride them one at a time but I still want all the ones I could never have as a kid and I guess the same can be said about the BBX's

I also don't like to be viewed as a hoard, I just like to have the things that I love and there is a lot of it LOL

With the boxes I only plan to collect the ones I already long for but don't want to let it get out of hand.

My wife and I are starting a home addition in a few weeks and I will have a room for all my vintage craziness LOL BBX's, BMX, Records, Transformers, G.I. Joe's, Metal Lunch boxes and all my other timeless collectables. Once this is complete I will have an area to host all this stuff and I will be able to really pick what will fit in the room and what will get sold (I hate selling stuff Frown ) LMAO

SE I can't answer #1 directly because I don't have a 777 but if it's like other boxes then the light behaves differently according to the power source. First when it's running off of AC the dial lights are on all the time and secondly when it's on batteries the dial light is only on when the light button is depressed. Now keep in mind I'm relating this behavior to other boxes and not the 777.

Can't help with #2

Ned has already covered #2.

I have between 30 and 40 boxes and yes it is to much in my opinion. For my first 20 or so I bought whatever I could find locally and picked up a few on ebay. Since then I've been narrowing my purchasing to just what I really want. I kind of figure at some point I'll get rid of maybe 20 or more boxes and just keep the ones I really want, be it sentimental reasons or just the cool factor.

The major problem is once I got started it was addicting and I couldn't pass up a local deal. Fortunately that fire is waning a little bit and I'm able to pass on boxes I would have bought just 1 year ago. I think most of us go through that phase no matter what we are collecting.
Have fun with it but don't let it take over your life or your house! Wink

jvc.floyd - 2008-03-12 09:22

hi the tuner on the gf777 only lights up when you hold the button for the tuner light down

smokinendo - 2008-03-12 10:13

Thanks Floyd

OK so I'm relieved and let down at the same time

I glad my 777 is in working order but I really wish it was built to stay lit. oh whelp Smile

I also wanted to ask about the quality of the Lloyds box I grabbed over the weekend. Is Lloyd's a reputable electronics manufacture ? I'm really not familiar with them at all (hence the What is this thread LOL) I didn't have much time to play with it but it is LOUD ! I think my 777 sounds better but the Lloyd's was really loud

I'll have to hook it up to the turn table and see what a record sounds like coming through it

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-12 10:31

Lloyds sold a lower quality boombox, some cool ones for sure but quality was really in the neighborhood of Lasonic, Tisonic, etc...

smokinendo - 2008-03-12 12:05

What a shame LOL Some of those are the nicest looking boxes imho

Thanks for the info guys

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-12 13:35

Yea Endo looks and quality don't always go together, their are lot's of great examples including some Lloyds, Tisonic's, Prosonic's, etc...

- 2008-03-12 14:06

welcome to the forum. to answer one of your questions this IS a very addicting hobby. if you decide to purchase most of your boxes on ebay it will most likely become a very expensive hobby as well. so have fun on your boombox hunts

transamguy1977 - 2008-03-12 14:39

I have upwards of 10 boxes.
Soon to be widdled down to about five choice ones.
To answer your tape deck problem if it has high speed dubbing the switch inside may be stuck in the on position . If it does have the high speed dubbing you may want to open it up and look for it and see.
That's where I would start.

petey.awol - 2008-03-12 14:46

I gotta admit that owning a box I seen as a kid is a thrill. Especially beign that I found these radios on my garbage routes. (I work for NY Dept Of Sanitation) People threw them away and here I come and BAM! I got a Sharp GF-777. It was royally ****** up, but with some wishful loving and the help of these guys here i got it working again. You can check out what I did on mine here. S2G Thread Link

You can the work that has to be done still. (Finding tape deck doors, and attaching the tuner glass JVC sent me, and gettign the decks to function.)

Since then i found a Lasonic 975, and the Aiwa 770. These are all radios i remeber f*ckign around with when i was a kid at an Electronic store on 14th Street in NYC. I gotta admit that this is a definate expensive hooby, but its worth it if you seek what you want and dont go bananas and get like 300+ radios. Before it all said and done, i want to keep the three i found and go for a Conion C-100. That thing is a sweet looking radio. That one i will have to shell out serious loot for. Being that i see them going for some serious chedder on here. The other three boxes i have are just straight up projects to keep me sane in this nutty city.

(P.S. I had a old GT Performer, Haro, Diamond Back BMX bike stolen from me in the mid 80's) I'm way too tall to riding them now but i still wanna rip it now and again.

appleknocker - 2008-03-12 19:19

I have around 40(lost track). I want to reduce 15 or so and there is about 10 more that I still want to buy. I don't want to ever have my collection be complete. I enjoy hunting for them and opening up a newly arrived boomer too much. It is a very addictive hobby and it's easy to get crazy when you first start collecting. I bought a few boomboxes right away thinking I had better get this one now or I won't find another, but that is the wrong way to start. You can take your time and most of the great boomboxes still show up for sale.
One of the best pieces of advice for my collecting was to find a good local repair person who can fix them. I have bought several boomboxes that were not fully functional for a good price and then had them repaired. It's kind of like buying the box all over again when you get it back all working great. Or if you are good mechanically, you can fix them yourself with help from the experts here.

Just to clarify a little: 100V is used in Japan ONLY.

Taiwan uses 110V, like the US.

Otherwise, most of East and Southeast Asia, including Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia and even Cambodia (Kampuchea), etc... is 220V just like Europe.
Exceptions: Singapore uses 230V and Malaysia uses 240V.

In South Asia, Pakistan uses 230V and India uses 240V. Burma (Myanmar) also uses 230V. (In my experience, actual current in those countries sometimes falls well short of the rated voltage, however.)

There is a whole range of different plug types (pin sizes and arrangements) used across the different countries, though, even though they are mostly using the same 220V.

smokinendo - 2008-03-14 17:14

WOW ! Been pretty busy over the last few days

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try my best to address all the comments. Sorry if I miss anyone Smile & I don't know many of your names

OK Masterblaster you seem very knowledgeable and willing to help out a new guy... Thanks Wink I appreciate it and hope I can some how return the favor some day

Autobot I was pretty sure that would be a common response about getting addicted and being expensive LOL AWWHHHHH The Hunt Big Grin Isn't that the best part ? I found some stuff in places I'd never think to look when I wasn't even expecting it & the feeling you get when you catch that first glimpse of your newly scored treasure...priceless

TAguy... yeah I've seen your stuff and it'd be pretty difficult to pick which ones to get rid of

sounds logical (pretty much what I was thinking too) I really didn't want to open it up but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. What can I clean the switches with ? Thanks Again

Peter thanks for the link Smile It was cool to see the 777 opened up, how does it sound with the Pyle's ? Did the two way speakers still sound right ? (Probably better) I know the box still needs a bunch of stuff but it cool you found one and it looks like a great start, especially for the price.

You'll have to hook up with us when we ride Central Park in the summer. Threes nothing better then seeing a group of middle aged men riding 20 inch bikes that are 25+ years old. We'll have to get you an old Redline RL20II, they're like 4X4's LOL

Appleknocker... 40 ? Dude your as crazy as me LMAO ! I got like 40 bikes and want to cut back a bit (need to is more like it) finding the deals is what it's all about Smile Patience is a virtue and I got nothing but time

Arkay... you have to work in the electrical field. You totally broke it down, much respect thanks for the little lesson. I appreciate it

Anyway thanks again for all the cool welcomes and answering some questions that probably get asked over and over again

sorry for the ling wind LOL
Brian

ned.209 - 2008-03-14 17:22

hey thanks for the info Arkay. they were rough guesses by me. im actually unsure about south America, Australia or NZ? i think the last two use 220..

petey.awol - 2008-03-14 17:26

If you supply the bike ...i'll be in Central Park with ya. My line of business doesnt really allow me to take a fall and go to work, but i can always drag my ass into work broken and claim i fell off the truck. (Not that i would do such a thing) wink wink ( I should really change my name here.)

BTW whats in Central Park that I miss out on? men riding BMX bikes?? Where have i been?

Peter my boy Guav works in the city and he sets up a ride in CP once a year. We also get together in North Jersey a few times a year

There are a bunch of us from 3 different websites. We have get togethers all over the place and basically hang and ride a bit. Some of us ride flatland some street and even some vert. The coolest part about it is that the old pros come to some of the events. Barrowing a bike won't be a problem Big Grin

DM4Y

I'm in NJ USA with a standard 2 prong 110 plug Smile You are a sick man... I saw your little video clip Big Grin That's some collection I'd be in there for 5 minutes before the cops got there (BOOM$*@@@ BOOM BOOM BOOM ***) LOL You must have some serious fun playin with all those toys

Say, what do I need to clean my switches and boards with ? Also where do I buy what I need ? Last one LOL Do I need to remove everything when I'm cleaning it or just open the box and clean the components while they're still installed ? (Probably depends on where they're located)

Thanks again in advance guys. I'm going to post a thread with my BMX stuff this week so I can show you guys that I too am a sick man LOL
