anyone enjoy music ??

redbenjoe - 2008-03-10 12:33

then you might like this story -

after the great bose 901s - i had thought that every bose product was an overpriced yuppee thingy-

but- about a year ago - our third most distinguished member tried to 'peer pressure' me into getting a bose model AW-1 --
its a 20 year old cassette job with bass and treble controls -

anyway - i figured i would hate it and continued to blow him off - for months-

then - after he gave me some other incredible great lead (Pioneer CK-5) - i determined that he was one of the few members that KNOWS his sh-t around here Smile

so finally - a few weeks ago - i won an AW-1 -

its came in dead mint - and sounded and worked - like NOTHING ELSE -- superb awesome quality-

but i thought it 'didnt count' -
because much to my surprise - i could not find the handle ! or even the battery box !

in the listing photos - you really could not tell about those 2 serious ommissions

so i sent my thanks and 'complaint' pm to our member --and he said - no problem ---
just jump back on ebay and get the 'power bag' that was a bose option -- then i would have a legit portable BOOMBOX

today , the perfect fitting bag arrived WITH the handle , a strap and a compact case for the TEN
D cells

-this box is a 15v / 80 watt little monster--
its only about 17 x 11 inches
but pumps like a kaboom and sounds soooo much better -

the happy ending - is that i loaded up the battery case , today, and went stomping around 'the hood' with some of the loudest , cleanest sound ever heard here

the bottom line is : if you like MUSIC - get these!!!

well i still prefer to lug around my JVC RC 550 if I am gonna be blasting to the street ...

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-10 12:50

Ira,

I have one and for a psuedo portable it's kick butt. If they had put a handle on it and a built in battery box it would be one hard to beat boombox. It wouldn't win in the looks department as a boombox but it would on sound.

redbenjoe - 2008-03-10 12:59

I Agree

vladi123456 - 2008-03-10 13:24

Ya, and if my Onkyo rack system came with a handle and a built in battery box - it would kick yall's Bose butt any day Wink

Well my car has a handle and a battery, does it qualify as a boombox?

I much prefer 45 ACP or 9mm over 22s anyday. Big Grin

Seriously though, I totally agree that the Bose radio is one stunning piece of electronics. The sound is unbelievable - and that's coming from hearing one years ago. I can't imagine how much nicer they are today.

I've got a broken soundesign box, two shoe boxes, some baling wire, and paper towel tubes, three rubber bands, a paper clip and the infamous You Tube penny speakers, and an old hande from a plunger that once together will spank your Bose and scramble your eggs Ira! Laugh Out Loud

"Hello. MacGyver, yeah, about that boombox. I've got the material you requested. Yes it should stop Ira's Bose and Honduran drug rebels too...." Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud

I went to the park last summer with my JVC RC550 on my shoulder ready to please the swarms with some nice dub tunes when I heard something which simply filled the park with an effortless ease and great sound. I immediately looked around trying to spot the source of the sound and spotted a man on the other side of the park lying down next to one of these bose units, in the bag of course.

I couldn't believe my ears, and having been to the park with many radios, hearing this bose thing literally fill the area with sound had me salivating.

I have seen one in person and know where it is, but am afraid my money woes will mean I won't get to taste the sheer power of this beast...

...yet.

redbenjoe - 2008-03-11 15:17

thanks alot for backing me up with that great story, beatbox -

this AW1 is one of the only stereos that doesnt even need a room or any walls to sound great --so its the best 'outdoor box'

in fact - all it really needs is to be ON Smile
__________

still - your 550 is much cooler looking , and the AW-1 with the 10 D cells is MUCH heavier than the 550

I had a pair of Bose 601s in the '80s and I ended up hating them!Though they had a nice spacious sound, the highs were very flat.I don't feel I could ever buy another one of their products. As people who like oldschool boxes, your reviews of the AW-1 surprise me.How does the AW-1 compare to the same updated model currently offered in the Bose lineup? If it's sound is the same,I just may visit a Bose store to see what all the fuss is about.

redbenjoe - 2008-03-12 21:37

jovie - its been about 30 years - but if i remebmer right -- those 601s were the cheap shots compared to the legendary 901s -
so dont let that pair turn you off from bose

as for the modern AW1 replacements -- i never have heard any -- but i think they may now be 3 or 4 times $$$ this old model --so i cant get all worked up over the newest bose stuff

all i can tell you is that the old AW1 sound is thrilling !!!

vitalxs - 2008-03-14 01:41

Hey Ira - I am 100% with you on the AW1. Nod Yes
Personally, I think that there are no other boombox in that size range that sounds better than AW1. I absolutely love the sound of it and it sounds great everywhere you put it.

It does look like a protable AC unit and that coloring scheme (beige with brown/red buttons) does not help its visual image either.

However, it is that alien looking design that produces that incredible sound and as for me, sound takes priority over looks.

I have many "good looking" boomboxes that sound like crap, so they are as good as paper weights... - on the shelf and never to be turned on...

This one is different - you grow up quickly to accept its looks and enjoy the sound.

Congrats on finally getting one!
