Conion CRC-H58F

arkay - 2008-02-29 07:26

A while back, Ned209 wrote in a thread about a less-common Conion: maybe Peppin has seen one of those h83's? Arkay you might be so lucky? honestly i think the grills are... bad... but its got that rarity factor i crave

Well, Ned209, I still haven’t been lucky enough to land an H83, but finally was lucky enough to bring home a Conion / Coney Onkyo CRC-H58F, among today’s boxes. Big Grin I think it is about as rare(?).

I haven’t got a picture of mine yet, but here is one of the exact same box, blatantly stolen from the boombox museum site at http://www.pocketcalculatorshow.com/boombox/golden13.html

Looked the model up here, and found it mentioned in only two threads. One –from which Ned’s comment above was taken-- was about cool ashtray pics of rare Conion models, but the pic links have disappeared, so I’m not sure how closely this one may (or may not) resemble one of the pictured ashtray ones.

The other thread was about Retro Addict’s efforts to repair someone’s clumsily bodged-in antenna job on one of these (branded as a Wren). In that thread, we learn that RADIOHIER also has that Wren.

Here are the thread links:

http://stereo2go.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8596027254/m/94...281045694#9281045694

The list of rebadges/variations that TPR shows in one thread is:

aka:
audiosonic-tbs7050 IBBN 7-11203
audiosonic-tbs8900 IBBN 7-07092

trident-cx447 IBBN 7-08136
trident-cx449 IBBN 7-05353
universum-unkn47 IBBN 7-03746

So after reading both those threads, I have a bunch of questions:

1. What does the H83 look like?

2. What are the differences between an H83 and an H58?

3. When were these made?

4. It is a safe assumption that all the rebadges were made by Coney Onkyo (Conion), or by another manufacturer?

5. What happened to the pics of cool Conions on Ashtrays? Any chance of restoring them, or else re-posting them here?

6. The full ID on the one I have, branded in front as a Conion, is "Coney Onkyo CRC-H58F. Anyone know what the "F" suffix designates on a Conion?

7. At the end of one thread, Retro Addict was thinking of trying to take out every screw in an attempt to get the box apart for repairs, but the thread is now closed, so we don’t know what happened. So Retro, did you get the box apart? Did it get fixed? Curious to know the end of the saga that "left us hanging..."

Sorry, I can’t comment yet on how this box sounds, nor say how it comes apart. I just brought it home today, and the one I have is cosmetically just fair: it has some minor spots of surface corrosion on the chrome, and some brown dust in the battery compartment which may be just old foam stuff, but it had a faint musty smell, so I decided I'm going to clean it inside and out before even testing it. I don't usually do that; it's just a decision based on gut instinct in this instance, in case I "fry" something by turning it on before it's ready.

Who else has any versions of the H83 and/or H58? Can you please tell us what you have, and post pics/comments, etc…? I’m hoping that maybe we can collectively get some good information together here on the different rebadges and variations of this model. It seems like a pretty good/cool box to me, from first impressions. Of course it is smaller than the C-100F, but build quality is at least as good, probably better.

Arkay posted a picture! YEEEEEHHAAAA!!!! Laugh Out Loud Wait, it isn't his. Laugh Out Loud

Very nice Coney-Onkyo score there! You know the more I see these the more I am turning.... Big Grin

I've always wondered about the lesser Conions since they are completely overshadowed by the C-100F. How many different models did Conion actually make? Are any of them any good?

Arkay the CRC-H58F looks good regardless. I'm looking forward to hearing your comments on it once you spend some time with it. Smile

I did not know Onkyo was involved with the making of Conions...

You learn something new on this forum every day!

mafiagato - 2008-03-01 01:24

ops, just yesterday i was thinking the same, thanks to the Ira post, how many conions are out?.

the conion crc-h83 was the winner of the ashtrays, looks strong, thanks jens for the bbdb pic.

and the conion unkn4 looks a superjumbo by elta Eek

Jens comes through again. Wow, I didn't know there were so many cool-looking Conions! That CRC-H83 looks very cool, with the slanted grills! A number of others look good, too.

One thing I'll say for collecting boomboxes: the more you see and learn and get, the more models you discover out there that seem worth collecting; models you never even suspected existed. When I started, I thought I'd find maybe 10 or 20 or (maximum) 50 "really good" models worth having, but it seems like there is no end, if you include some seldom-seen models like half these Conions. It never ends!

[Of course, there are also the irresistible duplicates. Tonight someone offered me BOTH another M70 and a Disco Robo... I get paid some cash tomorrow, so I think I'll bring them both home on Tuesday. Big Grin ]

So does anyone else have the H58, or H83, or (expanding the thread here) any other of these less-discussed Conions? Seems we always focus on the mighty C-100F, but there are others out there, sometimes, somewhere. I've seen some smaller radios with the Conion name on them, too ... but none of the other big ones in those pics.

Another question: Was Coney Onkyo actually part of the Onkyo group that made gear under the Onkyo name, or is it just a coincidence that the names "overlap"? Onkyo made some very good regular stereo gear!

I had the H-58f a while back.Pretty common model in this neck of the wood compared to a c-100 or c-126.

Appeared with 2 or 3 different labels if i remember right.( such as "AudioSonic" and "Sound 4008")

Had a solid feeling to it and a nice look.like some other conions it had this cool tape-storage-door benath the tapedeck/LED-Indicator.

sound was fine for a mid-sized boomer.

An old pic of mine:

transamguy1977 - 2008-03-01 07:01

WOW, lotsa different ones out there.
I had no idea there were so many models.

I am also very humbled to see my restored C-100 made the database. Nod Yes

I'm impressed with those pics, too. Your C-100 SHOULD be in the databse like that, because it was such an amazingly well-done "epic" restoration job!

What is with the GOLD C-100? Never seen one of those... I think I want one of them, too! Big Grin

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-01 08:19

I had no idea there were that many Conion models. Seems after the C-100F there isn't a whole lot of interest in Conion or else they just didn't make very many of the other models. Smile
