What are the top 5 Boomboxes that you own?

skippy1969 - 2008-02-14 18:35

What are the top 5 boomboxes that you have in your collection? They don't have to be your biggest or loudest, just your personal faves. Wink Right now mine are as follows. Big Grin

Looks like someone beat you to it today:

I'm not asking for the same thing,if its a big deal then just delete this post. Mad

panasonic.fan - 2008-02-14 19:28

I don't agree, but even so, no need to be offended with a well intentioned request, right?

His topic:

Your Top 5 Ghetto Blasters

Your topic, posted about 90 mins later:

What are the top 5 Boomboxes that you own?

The fact that he has disclosed that he intends to use it to base future purchases doesn't make the topic different, at least I didn't think it did.

I was just trying to prevent a conflict regarding which topic folks should respond to given the similar subject, that's all.

skippy1969 - 2008-02-14 19:34

Oh No,my post was about the top 5 boomboxes that you own. Not the top 5 boomboxes that you would like.I'm not offended......,yet. Wink

arkay - 2008-02-14 23:25

Hhhmm, top five that I own?
Off the top of my head, probably:

JVC RC-M90 [ Looks, sound, build quality - this one has it all ]
Conion C-100F [ HUGE, classic style, LEDs, a little chintzy, what's not to love? ]
Marantz PMS-8000 [ Just edges out the 7000, because of the extra tape drive ]
Marantz/Standard PMX-6000 [Wanted to include one with a turntable; a close pick between this and a VZ-2500, but I'm a Marantz nut, and the fold-out turntable is much cooler than the "slot" on a VZ. Smile ]

That's four, picked off the top of my head because they are favorites that are large, impressive, sound good, etc.. To pick just ONE fifth one is really, really hard. Among the crowd that begs to be included are the GF-9000, GF-777, GF-9696, Big Ben, M9998, the big Toshiba, or maybe even one of the smaller ones with unique features, like the JVC with the boom mike or the long red mini with four speakers or the fold-up ones, or maybe one of the really early mono ones with solid build and great sound and nostalgic looks ... a bunch of them are all "favorites" or "keepers" that I really like, each in its own way. I just can't pick a fifth one, unless maybe I flip a coin.

A few "patterns" stand out for me, though, in what I like:

I prefer one-piece boxes to 3-piece, although I make a few exceptions (notably Marantz ones, or Telefunken Studio 1 if I find one). I prefer EITHER the "classic" look, with two large woofers and a handle across the top, OR else something with an unusual or funky feature (like a boom mic, weird grill design, tuning cylinder on top instead of a dial, Big Ben's set-in woofer, etc...).

I usually have no interest in the ones that are basically mini-compo systems with a handle attached, although I appreciate that there are others who like them.

I also don't care for most rounded-off "egg" type things, even though some (notably the Cobra) are a bit interesting.

I have mixed feelings about the ones that don't really look like boomboxes, even though they meet the technical definition, like the Kaboom and the Disco Robo. I didn't care for them at first, but sometimes they seem to grow on me and I like them, then at other times I feel like I just don't need 'em. Just not sure about these.

IF a box is very rare, such as the gold-fronted GF-9494P (probably a prototype, can't find it mentioned anywhere else), that is a bonus for me. I know it is just a "hallucination" that doesn't affect what the thing really is, Rarity alone probably shouldn't affect my appreciation of it, but somehow I enjoy owning the rarer ones, when I'm lucky enough to find them.

I'm also slightly influenced by the ones that have been up on the boombox museum for a while; it's nice to look through the photos and see "How many of these cool things have I managed to find so far?" I'm keeping my eyes out for several that I still don't have, like the 990 with the keyboard, just because I like the pics of them there.

So all those things influence my "favorite" choices... but it's hard to narrow it down to just five!

ok brian -- are do-overs permitted on s2g ??--if so - i take it back --

actually - i was trying to contibute to skippys thread here about the 5 favorites --but its hard to make these selections -- because we have to leave so many good boxes out in the cold --

i know for sure that my best sounding box by far -- is the giant panny RX-6400 --it has a handle and a battery box -- but ol' panfan says it doesnt even count as a box !

to make matters more confusing -- my first ever Bose product was delivered today -- its their 20 year old model #AW-1 -

and it has incredible sound quality - more solid sounding than anything (except the 6400) -
but this one has neither a handle or a battery box !!

if skippy asked for the top 20 -- all this would be easier
