Craptastic Boomboxes

oldskool69 - 2008-02-20 02:55

Did you ever have a box that was so crappy or a POS quality and sound wise that you needed medicine to keep you from throwing up? Was it so bad that they even included a TV so you would not focus on how crappy it was and check out Knight Rider in black and white instead? Tell us about it and post a pic if you got it. I'll start the festivities! Laugh Out Loud

This Yorx made me want to "YOOORRRRXXXX" my lunch when I got it in high school. It even has the removable cassette! This is actually on eBay with a BIN of $179.00! Laugh Out Loud

I don't remember the model number, but I had a crappy little black Montgomery Ward Airline box that only had one full range speaker per channel and kind of a semi-rounded frontside.

Yea, it had a tape deck, radio, handle and ran on batteries, but its sound was downright embarassing and I never really took it out of the house because all my friends had Sharps, Sanyo's and JVCs that totally blew it away.

I don't even really count it as my "first" box. Instead, I give that honor to the GF-9292 I got from Dad back in 1980~81-ish. That sucker was the real deal for sure.

The crappiest box I have had was the Blaunkton Turbo-1. It's a black box as big as a GF-777 but only weighs about 4 lbs. because it's basically empty. The plastic itself was so brittle that it would break if you looked at it the wrong way. It was so suck-tacular that I traded it off and deleted all pictures of it so I'd never have to look at it again.

I remeber that my second taperecorder was a "nippon america".
It was a nasty cheap recorder. I remeber that the first time I recorded with it (2 days after I had bougth it) that mecha keeps enganged, even while pressing stop key, it was jammed.
I was firious, so I took a screwdriver and put it againt the head trough the door to relieve the function.
I damaged the head, but this piece of scrap contiune working (I wish I had destroyed it). After 2 month mecha started to make noises. I went to the service and changed the whole mecha (it was a cheap one, that you found in chinesse 90's recorders).
It last 2 month before get broken again.
I changed it again, it get broken again a third time. What a piece of scrap !!!.
Sound was as worst as you can imagine .., didn't have any input, even microphone !!!, turner was awfull. And output power weak enough to fall asleep even at high volume.
I hated it since I had bought it. Definitely a piece of scrap. It cost me u$$50, new in box.

I have the Emerson XLC-555 T.V. box which is similar in appearance to the ctr-949.Mine has the T.V. in place of the 949s top tape deck.It is basically a small black and white T.V. in a unit pretending to double as a boombox. If you took the T.V. out of it,it would probably weigh nothing. The detachable speakers weigh nothing. If you look close through the tweeter grills, you can see out the back of the speakers as there's nothing in there. The working full range drivers seem as though they could also fit into a slimline/mini design.Mine has dead sound so I can't comment on that.As for the Yorx,I'll bet the tweeters are fake also.Having to include a second deck,I can only imagine how bad the build and sound are on it.It was all about having as many features as possible at the cheapest price point by that time. You're really just paying for a T.V..

i think the ratio of garbage boxes to nice ones is somewhere in the 20:1 range...haha

i still grab them when they are cheap though!
