GOD DAMN!!Wish me luck!!

kid.sensation - 2008-10-13 14:07

Well this is the story..

Since nearly everyone of my friends knows my obsession for 80's Hi-Fi and Boomboxes a friend told me that her father had a very very big radio some years ago.She told that she still used it in her old bedroom when she was living with her parents.

Since i forgot about it , time passed.

This past weekend she was , among others, here for a small party.

We got in touch about the old radio her father had again and she told:
"Felix, it was way bigger than all of the radios you have in your flat!"

Well my knees shaked and i asked:
"Is it in one piece or can you detach it to like 3 pieces?"

She said: "No, I'm sure it was one piece! And it is from the 80's!"

I was like "OH MY GOOD GOD!"

She said that it is now in the basement and their parents do not use it anymore..but her father was not sure of giving it away.

Now..Since she could not tell any details like brand, design etc. i nearly gave up.

BUT

today she got in contact with me via internet and shared a pic.

people, im still shaking..It's a GF-777!
It may not be bigger than my others but still impressive.
( well, she certainly did not saw my 999, she maybe had recognized the style )

Ok, now maybe that's not that exciting in these days were conions are found randomly in the wild.
But let me tell you, i live in east-germany and nearly noone in the former gdr could afford a radio comming from outside the gdr or sovjet union back in the 80's before the german/german borders fell down.

so , finding a upper-series Sharp,JVC,Pana etc in the wild is nearly impossible in my area!

And now this is a 777!

I hope she reads my reply soon and asks her father if he would give it to me.
( maybe for free, maybe in a trade for a new CD-egg )

wish me luck!!

kid.sensation - 2008-10-13 14:20

well, since the commuinty-website, where she shared the pic with me does not allow "save as" and i can't do snapshots, i took a pic with my mobile-phone of the screen Roll Eyes

I've got one of those Risings, looks just like your picture too. I think it sounds pretty good too. The bass is wide and spacious. It was my first real old-skool bbox. Could use some restoration though.

Good luck Kid, I know that you will bring home the box. Nod Yes

retro.addict - 2008-10-14 02:21

Good luck, Kid. That one looks to be in good condition.

A tip: If you find a pic like that which you can't save, press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard. Then, open Paint (start menu, accessories, paint) and then edit, paste. When the image of your screen appears in the application, select the dotted square icon from the buttons on the left of the screen. Use that to cut out the picture you couldn't save. Once selected, right click, copy. File, new. 'Save changes to untitled?' No. Edit, paste. Then use the bars on the bottom and right hand side of the screen to pull the white page in to the edges of your picture. File, save as. Done. Smile

kid.sensation - 2008-10-14 07:52

Thank you all vor the nice replies and wishes!!

She is very happy that i like that old radio and said she will bring in all her charme and "Daddies girly"-status into the conversation of giving it to me.

I offered every kind of things that she could tell him as possibilities for trades.

Now, let's see how it will work out for me Smile

I'll keep ya'll updated Wink

Btw. R.A. i know the trick with the keys and paint but somehow that simply does not work on my new laptop Confused , no matter what i try..Who knows Roll Eyes

fuzzyduck - 2008-10-16 12:02

Good luck! Smile

oldskool69 - 2008-10-17 18:25

What is the status? How is it going thus far? Smile

buzz70 - 2008-10-21 12:40

I started reading this thread, and I needed a cold shower after getting to that picture.

kid.sensation - 2008-10-21 12:57

Until now , sadly, no real progress in getting it.

But i got to hear the radio's history:

Her father bought it back in the 80's when working in the libanon. He had big trouble to get it to germany and brought it "behind" the customs to the gdr.

My friend told me that it holds a lot of memories for her father - i understand that.

But i also told her that keeping this beauty in the basement , stucked beneath other things, is not the right deal either..

Hope she will get back in touch with her father soon Smile

smokinendo - 2008-10-21 13:32

DANG IT I read this when you first posted it but didn't have time to reply. I thought you would of had it by now... sounds like you have rekindled an old flame. I guess alls well that ends well ? At least it won't stay sitting below other forgotten items from there past

even if he takes it out and starts using it again

You know though sometimes people think that they want to get involved in something again for a short period of time then find out shortly after that it was better left in there past. Maybe this will be the case and you will end up with it after all ?

Hope it works out or you Felix I'd love to see you end up with it. Especially after hearing the story and feeling your excitement

My sentiments exactly well stated.

jameswp67 - 2008-10-21 18:13

I agree as well! I hope you get it, but if Dad decides to bring it back out, that's great as well, it deserves to be used!

fatdog - 2008-11-20 14:06

What happened with this, Felix? Confused

kid.sensation - 2008-11-21 05:59

Ah well bobby, long story short:

I simply can't get in contact with the girl at the moment and somehow she still thinks that this is an old radio worth nuthin'..seems like she forgets to ask her father about it everytime she's there - bummer Frown

why didn't you say to your _f r i e n d_ that those radios worth good money nowadays?

redbenjoe - 2008-11-21 08:12

very interesting post , metad --
thinking that i know what you mean -- I Agree Smile

kid.sensation - 2008-11-21 08:23

I do understand that too, especially the weight on the word friend.

I allready offered a fair amount of cash and told that this one is special to me and has good value on the free market.
Of course i did not offered cash that would bring me in a ebay-777 as this is still a rough grail in the basement.

Still, and i do admit this, i forget about it from time to time too as i do not see or read her very often.just like once or twice a month.
When i see/read her i take the chance to tell her over it again.

And in my eyes that's the only thing i can do now - be patient and wait.I do not want to call her up randomly about that radio as this particular girl is annoyed very fast Big Grin

She also told me, that this 777 has special value to her dad and that it might be not that easy to get it as i told somewhere in this topic before.

I will ask her next time i see her to get a decission - If her dad wants to keep it or get rid of it.

At the moment i do not really now what her father wants to do Frown

agreed.
a few years ago i was at a childhood friends mothers home.
the subject of my being involved in the electronic music community came up.
she went on to tell me of her experimentations with electronic music.
halfway through the convo she said you know i think i still have a unused synthesiser in the closet.
really.
she headed off to the closet and a few minutes later she returned with a boxed tb303 with the original battery from roland still in the plastic.
you want this? can you use it for your music?
well to make a long story short i painted her steps and her bedroom and got the tb303.
it was something i could have taken for free but i am just not like that.
if something is worth having then it should be something worth giving for.

redbenjoe - 2008-11-21 09:17

thats was good , kid -- that you did offer 'what you could'

was just an " old worthless cassette thing " Frown

and - to me - that's no celebration.

anyhow --still BET/hope you will end up with that box--and all will be fair and happy Smile

keep trying - keep us in the loop

71spud - 2008-11-21 09:53

Wouldn't it be better to turn her dad onto S2G and get him thinking about cleaning and fixing up his old 777? Sounds like he has quite the history with it. How many of us have gut wrenching stories of giving away a box (grail or not) with a personal history and then regretting it? Wouldn't it be nice if someone talked you out of it?

Maybe he doesn't care... and never will and the 777 is just a spring cleaning away from the dumpster. But you never know...

i am sure her dad is the reason she still has it. i mean even if someone isnt into boomboxes a lot of people still would hang on to something like a gf777. they are visually beautiful. even tho there is so many people who dont value them some regular folks do.
i am sure it will end up in kid sensations hands at the end of the day. patience waiting sucks but sometimes it works out.
