Saved box from the waste-monster!

viennasound - 2008-10-09 06:37

What yesterday happened, would nobody believe!

Prolog:
Last weeks i was searching for an medium-size blaster for holidays and so.
Most of my boxes are too big to carry with me in other countrys. The searching was more difficoult, as i thought.

Yesterday:
This week i am ill, a result of the bad weather the last weeks. Half vienna lies in the bed this days...
In the morning i went down the stairs to buy something at the grocery.
This moment the dump-truck came.

short break:
In austria the trucks are not so big than american´s. Most are MAN or ÖAF lorrys.
Like this:

The mascot of the MA48 ist the "waste-monster".
It should help the people stop making so much waste. Here it says "please don´t feed, i´m sooo fat"! :-)

Let´s go on...

At the back of the truck was hanging dominik, a friend of me. He is a great railroadfan. So every time he see me, he asked what´s new at our station.
I talked with him, while rolling out the container of our house. (There over 30residences in our house).
While talking the container was connected with the truck, the shredder inside started and the container went up.
Then it turnded to the openig of the dumper.
While the trash flushed into the car, i saw a little silver thing.
Could this be...
And there is no time to think longer.
I hit fast at the emergency-stopper, so the crushing machine of the truck stopped working in the next second.
Dominik asked, what´s wrong?
Wait a moment i said, jumped on the back of the truck and pulled out this one: Eek

This nice PHILIPS compact-line was wrapped in clear plastic, so it wasn´t dirty.
I fell dominik around the neck, gave him 5euros for the coffeeshop and told him, he should visit me the next days when i tested the box. Wink

At home i plugged it in - nothing.
Ok, i thought maybe i can repair it.
I own the same one, but it is a wreck of the dump. Regulators missing, electronic burned,...

So i took it in an other room and tested it a second time. And look, it works!
There i have used an other cable.
Result: Only the cable was broken, the box is fully ok!
It looks better than new.
Out of the cassettedeck, you can eat.
No scratches. Everything clean!

Yes, that´s storys of real live.
Remember: Fast reaction is important.
A few seconds later it would be shreddered! Frown

Here a few pics of my new baby: Cool

And the sound is much better than the CONIC in the back: Wink

On the top the "new" one, on bottom the wreck.
On photo it looks better, than it is.
Real doubledecker: Big Grin

When i bought my SOUNDMASTER i always had this box in my head. But it was´nt affordable. The double price than the master.

The reason?
Never give the waste-monster boomboxes to eat! Big Grin
Playing music saves our nature!

That's amazing, Roman!! Eek

Nice little box too! Cool Is that a D8132? I think isolator42 will be interested to read this. Nod Yes

I've dreamed of finding and rescuing a boombox from a skip or on it's way to the dump!

gluecifer - 2008-10-09 06:59

I love these stories of yours Roman, always entertaining. Thanks very much for them.

Congratulations on the new radio too, I'm sure she's gone to a very appreciative home.

Rock On.

I'm so predictable...
It's a D8117 or D8118. I have one.
These have a nice, warm sound for such a cheapie.

Congrats on your scoop, Roman Smile

devoltoni - 2008-10-09 07:46

Hey Roman, I'm coming in Austria right now to check all container for such boxes like that what you find. Laugh Out Loud

Nice score man. Nod Yes

fatdog - 2008-10-09 09:11

Roman should be heralded as a true hero and given a medal! That's awesome. Cool

viennasound - 2008-10-09 09:35

Thanks, boys! Smile

It´s a D8118 !
I love that Spatial Stereo´s! Cool

Sure, if we were not blaster-freaks, we did´nt care about such things. It was great luck, that my friend was at the truck. So it was´nt a problem to stop the wrecker.

@Toni: Normally you won´t find electronics in the normal waste container! It´s forbidden!
You have to bring electronic scrap to the waste collecting centers. Every district has one.
This owner was probably too lazy...
But he packed it into plastic, fortunately in clear! So i saw it an it´s clean.

Electronics at the collecting, you cannot get it! Forbidden to take it! It MUST be dumped! Eek
Crazy, but it is so. Prevent pre-selling!
With a little luck it goes first to the waste-fleamarket... Wink

The dead Philips will go to the dump next time - after parting out. If anybody needs parts, let me know.
I must reduce my "wreck-collection", but therefore i start a new thread. Wink

viennasound - 2008-10-09 10:11

Hey, just seen!
Both are 8118´s.
But there is a little different. Eek
Anybody see it? Wink

isolator42 - 2008-10-09 10:15

Headphone socket Smile

When you're junking the old one I could use the volume/tone/spatial sliders & circuit board. two of mine are broken...
Let me know if you can help me here & I'll PM you.

cheers,
Paul

Right! Big Grin
Amazing. The same radio, but the "old" one has the headphone jack. Roll Eyes

Both volumeregulator caps are missing at the wreck. You see it at the last pic with the Soundmaster (the left is it).
But i will part it out totally, make pics and send it to you! If any part will help you, no problem! Nod Yes

eddy - 2008-10-09 11:01

Wow Roman , there should be a reward for saving the poor thing. Cool

fuzzyduck - 2008-10-09 11:09

Roman you're a star, great save there!!! Cool Cool Nod Yes

ao - 2008-10-09 11:12

masterblaster84 - 2008-10-09 15:10

If a few of you are able to salvage a few nice boxes from the rubble heap I can only imagine how many boxes are being destroyed everyday all over the world. Frown

Then you must tell me the reason! Confused
If i had pulled out a wreck, dusty and dead, i would agree with you.
But this box is in perfect condition!
And i was searching for such box ( the stored wreck says it!).
The Soundmaster was my only small stereo.
If you don´t like this type, sorry. Leaving

@masterblaster: you are right! Too many were dumped every day.
Some people would be happy to get it.
Not only collectors, poor people too! Nod Yes
And i wrote it above: at viennas dumps you cannot get it - forbidden.
Wen i found boxes at dump, than outside in the smaller villages, there are other laws! Wink
But you must be faster than the hungarian waste-collectors... Big Grin

moncheeto - 2008-10-10 02:50

great story roman Nod Yes i think the senate should pass a bill on this one that any boombox should be give to the right people before they are extint Nod Yes boombox security a part of homeland security.. Big Grin

isolator42 - 2008-10-13 02:46

These 3wpc small Philips stereos are not exactly collectors items, so many wouldn't bother with them.

Even so, they have good points:
They give a nice warm sound - better than you'd think considering the plasticy build & Philips' spatial stereo is the best "stereo-wide" I've ever heard.
These only take 4 D cells & the low power consumption means they last for ages.
There are some other nice little features, like good AFC on FM & a full auto-stop deck. I made lots of off-air recordings of one of these onto TDK ADs & they still sound good today - very crisp.

The D8132 (same chassis as the D8118) is a personal grail of mine - it was my first ever stereo boombox - so despite it's lack of overall appeal I absolutely love it...
