I`m online again after brutal rootkit attack...

tpr - 2008-09-30 13:11

After a couple of days I`m online again.
I cought a rootkit virus which distroyed the whole content of my two hard disks.
Fortunately I saved several important files before.

Nevertheless : a real desaster.
I lost all passwords
all e-mail contacts
a bunch software

.....+

An AV (antivir-pop up window was opened and said :I found a virus!-please update;I clicked on the update button -and got The dilemma!
That was an AV-Fake -pop up window!

I know exactly how that feels to lose so much data. It sucks big time! Did the BBDB survive?? Confused

tpr - 2008-09-30 13:14

yes it survived... Wink

enskanker - 2008-09-30 13:15

If I can offer any help in any way...please advise.

Sorry to hear of you problems....I hate those kind of hits on one's PC. Its been several years but I know what you went through.

kid.sensation - 2008-09-30 13:18

I had a similar virus 2 years ago.

I went to download a anti-vir software that turned out to be a virus on it's own.

Lost everything too back then.

Hope you can recover most of your data/personal data soon!

redbenjoe - 2008-09-30 13:25

since 2 days ago -- have not been able to open the bbdb -

I'm sorry to hear this Jens, and glad to have you back online. Thankful too that the BBDB wasn't a victim, though I'm sure you develop that on a different PC than you browse the web with.

I'm curious, what OS, web browser and AV program did you have installed at the time?

For you Windows users, it's a good time to remind you to *not* run your OS logged in as administrator. And, having recently cleaned up my sisters Mac laptop after a destructive virus experience, I can tell you for a fact that they are not immune. Perhaps someday when the Mac OS actually has some market share the script kiddies will start paying attention and trying to ruin your day too Wink

i 3rd that. i live dangerous and dont even have a virus program Nod Yes

jaredscottfla - 2008-09-30 21:20

Eek That is Dangerous
I use Mcafee it's pretty good

oldskool69 - 2008-10-01 02:11

I run Vista on my laptop with a purchased, never No No downloaded, all around protection suite. I am leery of "all" software downloads. Microsoft Update is about it for me other than auto updates I allow. If there is something I want I can actually scan it as it dumps to a non executable folder and if my firewalls or suite doesn't like it, I chunk it. I also keep everything updated because no matter what you do, there is always some homer who's trying to ruin you day.

I recommend that you NEVER No No download a protection program of any kind. Even AVG Anti-Virus, which is good, has been a victim of someone using their likeness to fool people into downloading bad stuff.

Your best bet is to go to a reputable retailer, buy a good protection suite (Norton, McAfee, and Trend-Micro are good ones.) and install it. Allow it to handle it's updates and all should be well. It's also good to have a hard firewall active as well.

I'm really sorry you had to go through this Jens. Frown It an ongoing battle for al of us.

gluecifer - 2008-10-01 02:21

Welcome back Jens. I hope you never have to suffer that pain again.

Rock On.

retro.addict - 2008-10-01 05:30

Sorry to hear you fell victim to one of those viruses, Jens. Frown Glad to hear you managed to save a lot of your important stuff. Smile

carey - 2008-10-01 05:43

I'm able to recover any and all data from multiple deleted partions, up to six layer format across different OS.

I once tasked recovery a partion and data from a drive that had been fdisked, then installed with XP, then another virus took this partion thus a second fresh install.
I was able to recover most if not all emails, contacts, and files from the first original installation.

tpr - 2008-10-01 05:45

thanks guys.

I did not loose important files.
what a luck. Wink

..............sometimes it`s good to throw away old stuff and to start new projects!°

yep,great!

once I had a defective hitachi hard disk (note book)and sent it to our member docP(from Delhi!),his friend rescued all my files and I got a bunch of dvds from India two weeks later... ... Smile

carey - 2008-10-01 06:02

av-comparatives.org
An independent comparative of
Antivirus products.
At one time only two products, AVIRA and NOD32
had passed with suitable high scores.
If you had used Symantec or Norton products, you might as well have no protection,
same with McAfee and a few others.
They've since gotten their act together although not great enough for me.
AVIRA
free-av.com
NOD32
eset.com
Using Avira, free home version for my virus protection five years without a problem.
Their full purchase product provides many more features worth the purchase price, although this free version provides a level of straight virus protection as high as this full priced product.

chilinvilin - 2008-10-01 12:38

Sorry to hear Jens...
Same thing happened to me a while back and not only did it wipe all my data I had to pay $150 for a new windows disk. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tpr - 2008-10-02 17:30

- 2008-10-02 18:49
