Seeking Boombox Contributors

wonderlust - 2009-04-02 14:15

I am a Boombox collector. I've had a number of them in my life since I could first afford to buy cassette tapes and D cell batteries. Some of you might have viewed samples from the images of my collection at: The Boombox Project

I've been working on this project for a few years now as a peaceful break between my commercial and journalism assignments. In the past few months since I posted the pictures on my site they have gained the attention of a wide audience of enthusiasts. This has led to a collaboration with Spike Lee on a publication about these images (he has written the forward to the book). I am however just once voice amongst many about this topic. I wish there had been more time to develop relationships with other members of this site over the past few years but due to the nature of my work, I often end up in parts of the world living off of the grid for extended periods of time. However, I am reaching out now as this is a chance to get to know some of you. I already have a friendship with jameswp67 that goes back almost 20 years (we recently reconnected through this site). I would like to include those of you are interested in this book project. That includes your voices as experts, visionaries, admirers, philosophers, participators and collectors. Your contribution could be a few words, an essay of an important memory, an old B-boy picture from your youth or even the chance for me to visit you and photograph your collection (I live in New York City and would like to meet collectors in the North East USA/Canada - as well as internationally). The point of this project is for it to be a democracy of perspectives including different point's of view and dialogues. Those of you who are interested please feel free to contact me as soon as possible through the private messaging feature of stereo2go (or through regular e-mail, via the contact link on my website).

I look forward to communicating more about this project and sharing in your thoughts and enthusiasm for something we all share a passionate interest in.

All the best Lyle (aka Wonderlust)

Nice pictures, are those HDR composites? I especially like your Crown 950F, as you can see (<_<) I own one too. I assume that's just "make up" on the box, as it really does look pretty clean.

I like your project but the only box I've got to show is already in your collection. Best of luck, and be sure to post more on the website.

Are there any collectors in the New York area? I'd like to speak with any of you about meeting to photograph you and your collection for the book I am working on. Thanks and look forward to connecting.
