Undecided on Philips box...

retro.addict - 2009-02-23 06:37

Hi, I've seen for sale a very nice late '80s (87-88) boombox for sale, it's a Philips D8478. It has an early '90s look, and I like it very much. The box is in amazingly good condition, is square and has lots of shiny black plastic and green graphics on show. It has square speaker grilles with '2 way speakers' written on them. It's a 3-piece, with twin cassette decks and 5 band equalizer. But I'm undecided on whether to buy it or not. It's cheap, so the price isn't the issue. The issue is space at home. I will have to dispose of one or more of my current boxes to accommodate it. What shall I do?? Eek By the way, can anyone post a picture of this model?

Hey RA,i bought one from a boot sale last year, its not a very good box, cheaply made, sound is below average, but it was loud as i remember. But as i only paid £1.50 for it i wasnt too fussed.

Well, I like Philips stuff but I'd leave this one.
IMHO, it looks like 1000s of other black plastic, cheaply made "decline & fall" era boomboxes. It's a shame, because features-wise it's similar to some really good boomboxes. The quoted "32W PMPO" power output translates to about 4 watts per channel, tops.

If you've got a use for it, then why not, but if you add it to a collection , I'll wager this won't be one you dust off to play with much, if at all.

Sorry to be all "glass-half-empty" about it... Smile

Thanks for your information everyone. Nellie I guess if it doesn't sound too good I'll leave it. I love good sounding boxes! Cool It's still available (for sale in a local shop) and I still like the look of it. Plus it has condition very much on it's side. Anyway I'm thinking at the moment that I'll leave it. If it's still there in a few weeks I'll probably get it.
