Future Grails

joe.cool - 2008-09-12 07:23

The 70's, 80's and 90's are long gone. And, we're already well into the 2000's. Of course, times have changed, so too, have the shape (and quality) of things in general. What then, will future generations of boombox collectors hoard (since we've already scooped up about 99% of any boxes, eggs and squeggs worthy of collecting world wide)? Alas, that doesn't leave too much for the up and coming wave of new age portable audio aficionados does it? Imagine, if you will, the prospect of indepth reviews, side by side comparisons, heated forum discussions, and even collector reunions, with the likes of...

Eek...but wait, this is no laughing matter. I know of at least one member here who's quietly accumulating a large quantity of these boomboxes um, things! I'll bet there's even more "closet types" here, doing the same! Big Grin Laugh Out Loud

gluecifer - 2008-09-12 07:37

My bets would be hedged on the radio's used in High School Musical and all those Bring It movies as being investments.

That's if Breakin' has taught us anything.

Rock On.

I'm sure I'm not the member you're thinking of, but I do have a modest collection of these sorts of boomboxes... not necessarily because I think they'll be valuable or collectible someday (although that would be nice!), but just because I like 'em! The designs may take some getting used to, especially for '80's-boombox-lovers, but to me they're distinctive and creative nonetheless. I can think of a few reasons why buying boxes like these isn't as dumb as it may seem at first:

1. You have the market pretty much to yourself. Prices are good. Competition is non-existent. And you'll have no worries that you're collecting them "just because everybody else does."
2. They're often colorful.
3. They're plentiful. The selection is endless.
4. They may not always sound like the classics, but they're full of fun gizmos, some of which actually enhance the sound.
5. A collection of these fits nicely in your house.

Two of my favorites are a blue and a white "Slendy" from about five or six years ago. The blue one is a Victor for the Japanese market, and the white one is a JVC for the rest of the world. Notice that, as usual, the Japanese one is the only one that gets the whimsical name. The other version just gets a model number.

There are some here that think it's all about power and high performance.Personally I think that's only part of it.I have a few egg that I personally think are unique. They are not high end models either.Though I relish the old and powerful classics, styling ,controls, etc. are equally important to me and I have an open mind.Though some of the offerings of today have the build quality of Hollywood break-away furniture, they are still boomboxes. Some are unique in their own way. That often times is a highly personal assessment.Besides,I feel anything that becomes dated will eventually be collectible.Personally I welcome collectors of stuff from recent years here in the forum.

Hahahaha...no no no nelsongf9696! I don't need to come out of the closet. My appreciation of highend Panasonic and JVC "eggs" is a matter of public record here. I still have the bumps 'n bruises and battle scars to prove it! Big Grin I'll continue to defend 'em cuz just as a book can't be judged by it's cover, neither can the performance of certain modern era bbxs (or squeggs, if you will). There are some outstanding products out there, made by only a very few reputable manufacturers whose only crime was to produce superb gear, packaged in the shape of what the world currently dictates as "in".

My collection continues to grow, most recently with sophisticated offerings from the likes of Panasonic and JVC...and I'm lovin' it! Big Grin

The whole Coby thing was meant as a joke (with no offense to anyone intended). But while we're on the subject of "coming out of the closet", I'll let you in on a little secret...I, Joe-(analog)-Cool, have discovered the joy of downloading music, making my own cd's with said downloaded music, and loving the whole mp3 experience...so much so, that I'm seriously considering the purchase of my very own ipod! There, I've said it...it feels so good to be out! Laugh Out Loud

i finally have to 'come clean' to admit that i have never even had or heard ONE coby -- !!! Frown

however -that kaboomy looking coby in your post --is the only one that looks as though it has some semi-serious potential --

will respond to your
'how it sounds' question--

we see them for about $50 NIB on ebay --and they MIGHT be ok Smile

General s2g consensus: There is yet to be a copycat Kaboom that can hold a candle to the real thing from JVC. You get what you pay for...

jovie - 2008-09-16 07:07

JC,
If your getting a Ipod Touch you might consider this accessory.

http://www.sendstation.com/us/products/pocketdock/lineout-usb.html

It allows you to get a true line-out signal from Ipods (excepting the Shuffle) to feed into a boxes line-in.This way you don't have to worry about the Ipods volume control or EQ settings.I'm also downloading to fill up my first generation Touch 16 gig. It's my player of choice for getting MP3s into my boomboxes and out the speakers. For headphone listening,I'm happy that Apple decided to equip the new Touch with a side mounted rocker switch for volume control.Too bad mine doesn't have one of those.

joe.cool - 2008-09-16 07:14

Jovie,

Thank you for the heads up. A very wothwhile accessory. Much appreciated. Smile

If memory serves me correctly, I believe that Jens did a side by side comparison of one of the early Kabooms and an Elta knock off a while back. Naturally, the results were predictable. I would suspect more of the same here too.

In a way, it must be flattering to a manufacturer when others copy (but rearly duplicate) well known models.

Funny, I own the same monitor speakers they show on this page. They are cheap m-audio´s and are not the best example for "great sound". I just use them for my dj-set but wouldn´t trust them for producing and for HiFi a bad choice =)

transwave5000 - 2008-09-16 19:52

Collectable...maybe.

They look good 10 feet away but dont get any closer.

Many are going MP3 dock and radio only.

Now this is a very good idea.
The headphone output from an iPod is significantly worse quality than the line-out, even with the EQ switched off.
My car stereo has a 1/4" Aux In in addition to proper iPod connectivity (though the dock connector - controlled from the car stereo head-unit), so I was able to directly compare the two. I set the volume on the headphone output to the same level as the line out.
The line out was... "clearer" is the best way I can describe it. The headphone output sounded good enough, but the line out was simply a bit better.
Might be worth mentioning here that my car stereo is good enough to tell the diffreence - it isn't some stock gear from Ford (although their stuff isn't too shabby these days). I do most of my music listening in the car, so I installed a grand's worth of Kenwood & Kicker kit in there... I didn't pay that much for it, however Smile

Anyway, I had a look at that website & I really like these:

I guess I'm confused here. Don't most people use the headphone port to connect their iPod or MP3 player to their bbx? I do, and yeah it is kind of a pain to have to match the volume between both devices, but otherwise it sounds fine. When you say "true" line-in signal what do you mean?

Yes.
The iPod's headphone output is good, however, the line out is a bit better.

quote:
Originally posted by Reli:

This is a line level signal.
In home stereo it's what a audio component, such as a CD or DVD player, etc. will output to an amplifier. The audio signal is at a fixed level.
On an iPod, a line level audio output is available via the iPod dock connection (not the headphone socket).
This line level audio output hasn't been through the headphone stage of the iPod (which is not the iPod's best feature). So, if you switch the iPod EQ off, the line level audio output from your iPod will be as pure as it can be (without major iPod surgery).

It is a fixed level, so the iPod's volume control will not affect it & it's arguably better for a b-box's line in.

...hope this helps Smile

jovie - 2008-09-22 07:21

In another post,it was mentioned the Creative Zen line was available with a similar docking piece to get video out.If this also works with audio only,it might be a preferable player. This is because I believe the Creative player supports "drag and drop" if I'm not mistaken.

I Agree
I was recently explaining to my brother that i lose volume and quality when running an mp3 player through line-in so he brought his ipod around with this accessory and it made a huge difference. I didnt realsie just how much i had been missing out on. Definately well worth getting.
Unfortunately my cheap mp3 player does not have this option, only headphone out.
