Yeah...... I have been meaning to get one of those for a while.

So, good?

walkgirl - 2008-09-08 03:05

I think I will think about getting one Smile

These have been tempting me for a while too.. but my FM Transmitter deally happened and I pretty much forgot about them.

The big question I have is if the Play and FFWD(skip) functions on the players work if the belts in a tape deck are screwed. So if I put one in my radio with no belts but has a Play mechanism that locks in place will it work? And same for the FFWD(skip) function.

If they do these could be a nice place holder until I can afford to get the decks I'm not skilled enough to fix (cough, TPR-950, cough) done by a professional.

I prefer the look of the Duo-DX one, definitely looks sturdier.

Rock On.

Yap... at 100.99995%!!!!!!!!!!! Your best bet, whilst waiting to get the Bbox fixed, is to unplug your motor(s) to the tape deck (if mechanical) or un-solder/un-fasten the positive wire to the motor(s).... This will allow you to push play, have the heads align... and listen to your tunes using a good 50% lest power, thus having a HELL of a longer listening time whilst using batteries!!!!!!! Nod Yes

So basically these work just like any other MP3 player, you can carry it around and use headphones with it, or you can put it into your tape player and press play. But then of course you would have to listen to your songs in the same order every time, you couldn't skip tracks unless you had some kind of remote control?

I have one.It tends to be finicky playing on some boxes. On some it will not work at all. When it works though,it sounds really good.I'd recommend it to keep your options open for playing mp3s in case a box doesn't have a decent line-in.I'm not fond of transmitters.

If the deck will close with one in a good tape adapter works well. The only worry is if with the wire sticking out of the deck the deck won't close.

jovie - 2008-09-11 08:40

I had a lot of problems with boxes trying to run a cassette adapters wire out of the tape door. Many boxes would autostop the tape mechanism after only a few seconds. At least one only played back sound in one channel. The ones that played OK had a loud clicking with every rotation of the tape wheels.Fearing overstressing things or damage to the motor I decided that wasn't a good way to go.In fact I tried numerous ways of rerouting the wire without success on numerous boxes-short of taking the box apart to run it internally.Perhaps there is a trick to it.

928gts - 2008-09-11 11:58

Actually when I use mine I just hit the pause button on the deck so the motors don't need to run thus saving battery power and preventing any possible damage/excessive wear to the drive mechanism. The worst problem I have is the fact that since the heads aren't quite lined up 100% with each other one channel is ever so slightly louder than the other.

Well..... That would be ideal, but having the pause button pushed does not stop the motor in basically all Bboxes. But it will reduce drag thus using up less power because the motor runs/turns freely..... now, if you simply unplug or unsolder the motor, like mentioned before... NOW we are talking about saving power and having less wear and tear to the motor and mechanical parts.... Nod Yes

Well, actually... these kind of adapters don't have a cable sticking out. The music is stored on an SD card and the device plays the music.

I have the Digisette Duo. The FF/REW function works on some boxes, not on others. However, most of what I listen to with the Digisette are long DJ Mixes anyway... so the FF/REW function is not "that" important to me.

The Digisette Battery is its downfall. I'd go for one of these other units chargeable via USB instead... I may have to get one just because.

As for painting it, maybe we should petition Fatdog to make some stickers for us that look like reel tapes??? He's awesome with that kind of thing...

That's a shame - which one do you have?
I've used my Digisette on loads of different b-boxes without any trouble - no clicking, ffwd & rew work fine, equal sound in both channels, etc. Agreed about the battery, but these are still available new on eBay & from online retailers.
Also the strong metal casework on the Digisette, no screen to break & it's tough carry-case make it ideal for taking to a gig or somewhere where you might not want to risk your iPod (etc.). The comparitively high build quality is no surprise when you think the Digisette retailed at over US$200...
More pics of the Digisette here.

One other unexpected "bonus": the weight of the Digisette makes the horizontal tape doors on many Hitachi 3Ds nice and slow damped again...
