Thinning Out --s2g style

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 04:33

anybody addicted ??
not me Smile

about a year ago --i pledged to my patient, box-hating family that i would "get rid of this sh-t"

honorable dude that i am --sold a few dozen real nice boxes (i miss them ALL)

________________________

during this exact time --i bought three dozen.

(100% true confessions story)

so --anybody else thinning out ?? Laugh Out Loud

enskanker - 2008-08-30 04:44

YES....you all know I sold off a bunch last year in anticipation of the move.

Bought only one this year...but starting to salivate again.....

and I have for the first time ever found a listing of the original mono portable that my ex-wife bought me many years ago.

I think I must bid on that.....

aza - 2008-08-30 05:34

When i feel im running out of room i start to thin out anything else i can think of to make way for more boxes Smile

For example when i first joined s2g i had around 12 complete home stereo units from the 70's and 80's era, now i have 4 !!

Only problem is those 4 are staying so now i have to work out whats next to go Frown

And without chairs who needs a table Wink

I can picture the extra space already.

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 05:50

well - yup -
there's space for 15 more grails Smile

(except tables often come in handy --to put boxes on or under)

asdexander - 2008-08-30 06:26

No need for thinning out for me. My collection is thin as it is.

What are you guys waiting for? Ship them boxes over here! Big Grin

walkgirl - 2008-08-30 06:31

Or collect walkmans, they do not use much space Big Grin

transamguy1977 - 2008-08-30 06:37

The hardest part is picking which ones to go when you want a new one!!
as of now I have only have 8 but would kick myself for getting rid of any one of them.
I see now how collections get so big. Nod Yes

oldskool69 - 2008-08-30 06:51

I've actually given away a few (of the lesser ones of course). Traded as well. Haven't done nothing since Ira worked me over in Florida so he could tell his family "See, I told you I get rid of one! Laugh Out Loud

My tastes are changing to smaller and one piece units. I have some heavy duty component sets so it would have to be a special one for me to go after another. Smile

gluecifer - 2008-08-30 06:59

All my mates are convinced that one day they'll turn up and have to sit on ghettoblasters as all the chairs will have been dispensed with.

I tell them it's good they're prepared for that to happen already.

Rock On.

baby.boomer - 2008-08-30 07:09

I still have never thinned out. (Boomboxes or personally!) The "hobby area" of our basement looks like DM4U's house on steroids.

My plan is for my wife (she doesn't know it yet) to have one, big, open house when I die, post a notice here on S2G, and then let whoever gets here grab whatever they want. That'll thin things out in a hurry! It won't leave much of an inheritance for my family, but they're hard-working, young whippersnappers, so they'll survive. I think.

jaredscottfla - 2008-08-30 07:32

Big Grin keep thinking and saying will thin out,but haven't yet! Big Grin

sinister - 2008-08-30 07:43

ive been toying with the idea as of late. no room or time. dealing with other items on my plate right now. Wink

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 08:22

this weekend --there are 2 florida hurricanes on the way --
hoping that the ten of usdown here --wont have the

'automatic thin-out' Smile

joe.cool - 2008-08-30 08:28

Well, for me, not really thinning out...more like learning creative storage skills Big Grin While I have in the past, released some back to whence they came (Goodwill), I have more than made up for those...now, I just find ways to store the um..."extras" in the basement and garage. Of course, there will be a serious space crisis, when I finally get around to actually finishing the basement...then my creativity will really be put to the test! Laugh Out Loud

ahardb0dy - 2008-08-30 08:48

Ira, wouldn't like to hear any hurricanes hitting near where you and ramon live, but if I see any boomboxes flying thru the air or landing in my yard at least I'll know where they came from!!

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 09:00

tony --as soon as YOU are ready to thin-out ---
------DIBS!! Smile

jlf - 2008-08-30 09:29

I thin out certain types of boxes from time to time... like all this year I was about the 24 x 13 or there about size.

The boxes I was buying all had to be about that same dimension....

Got tired of stepping from one small square of carpet left in my office to the other to get to my desk... so I started selling / swapping.

Now Ive discovered Marantz boxes, and the only good thing about that is that they rarely come up for sale!!! Smile

So I have a built in safety for running out of room, unless I ever join Arkay in Hong Kong on an electronics spree!!! Then I'll end up with nearly every model number ever just like him!

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 10:01

jlf --our skippy has his home all FULL of marantz Smile

themightyrepairer - 2008-08-30 11:18

well i have about 8 boxes left.. had close to 50 at one point.. and they soon will be gone.. just keeping my Kaboom since it gives me what i want in a portable.. all others will go the way of the trash or modest sales on Ebay.. just not a big fan of shipping them.. some are quite large.. i most likely wont be buying anymore.. since all they do is sit there.. i'm afraid to take the nice ones out in fear of damaging them.. so there they sit.. whats the point then? i still love em.. but just dont want to store em..

jt - 2008-08-30 11:36

Where are you located and what do you have left? Maybe a local member will be interested and pick them up...

redbenjoe - 2008-08-30 11:40

mightyrepairer --do you have a few that just sit --
but you like looking at so much --that you would miss --when they are gone --?

ie - i have 2 non-working boxes that are keepers -just for the great looks.

retro.addict - 2008-09-01 09:35

Lately, I've been giving one crap box away when I buy a new one, but now I'm running out of crap boxes. Soon I will have a huge collection (I don't want a HUGE collection) and all of my boxes will be too good to give away. Then I find myself in a rut.

- 2008-09-01 09:48

I know the feeling ra i have about 30 boxes i dont even look at anymore there stuffed away in the coboards.

retro.addict - 2008-09-01 09:59

Rimmer, I too have about 30 which don't get looked at, but I haven't yet got the heart to give them away. I have numerous Sharps which I never use because I now have my GF-9000 & GF-777. I don't even use my 9000 very often. All of my boxes are working and most are in great physical condition, but too many of them just don't 'do it' for me anymore - especially the ones with only a tone control. I have a JVC RC-656 which saw solid service until my RC-838 arrived. Now it's just 'hanging around' with all the other 'replaced' boxes.

- 2008-09-01 10:02

Just think youre self lucky ra youre 9000 blows my c100 away Smile

masterblaster84 - 2008-09-01 10:15

Seems 30 is a common number for boxes stored out of site. Nod Yes I to have about 30 boxes that are stored out of site and about 30 that are stored in a room and toyed with occasionally. If I ever get the courage to thin out I feel 30 nice boxes is a number I can manage, but how do I decide which half of the collection to let go of? Confused

l.lopez - 2008-09-01 11:40

Smile Evertime I need room cause I have to many boomers but everytime I sell 3 or 4 I buy 1 boombox for every3 or 4 I sell I need help I'm addicted to boombox that I don't know what else to buy but wait I know what I can buy now a Honda 250cc scooter to zip around to work cause with these gas prices forget about it but also the scooter will help me thin down my habbits of buying boomboxes evertime I go to the fleamarket since I can only carry 1 boombox not 3 or 4 when I take my car Laugh Out Loud.

Yeah, most of my 3Ds are stored. I must get around to sorting the last couple out so I can show the complete collection...

On the subject of 3D's, how far are you now off having ALL of the models? Smile

isolator42 - 2008-09-02 09:45

Well, when I sort out my CX-200 & the 3D75, the collection will be complete.
19 in total (I think).
I've collected all the different styles, rather than every possible variant. If it has a different shaped case, I've got it.
For example the 3D40 was also available as the 3D45 which had a digital tuner, but otherwise they're identical. If I tried to collect every variant I'd be broke & out of space Smile

...of course there's an exception. If the case was the same but a CD player was added, I've got it (for example, the 3D95 & the CXW700).

Anyway, I'll take loads of pics & bore you all silly sometime soon. Lovers of silver, classic shaped b-boxes might want to talk amongst themselves... Smile

If you're thinking of this one Tim, it's very similar to look at, but it has 2 tape decks & no CD player. That one you sent me is next in line for the TLC treatment. Works 100% bu there's so much dirt inside it the woofer makes some funny noises. It's Dettox & Bounty time... Smile

HITACHI 3D8 it has to be a HITACHI 3D-(8) it has to have the number 8 after the (D) in the model designation... that is the one to get ... Wink

fuzzyduck - 2008-09-04 12:57

I will be thinning down my collection soon as
I don't use them and they are just sitting in the spare room under a blanket. They need to go to a good home and be used so that they don't deteriorate.
I will however be keeping my GF-777, 555, one 575 and my 9000. Smile

Agreed. The 3D8 is one of the best.
- 1st generation had better build quality.
- squared off looks will appeal to more S2Gers
- 6½" woofer has a long throw - plenty of thump.
- *Proper* Aux-In
- 3 band EQ
- A seperate motor for each deck is a nice touch

The only other 3D to out-do it would be the CXW800...

1. is the single woofer better than the double woofer
2. or is the singel woofer better because of its simplicity, or sound or ... ?

I had a 3d8 great box the bass is warmer too than the latter 3d's.

peter.griffin - 2008-09-23 07:20

Yup, I'll be doing that soon. My wife is fed up with them sitting on the floor. Probably throw away or donate the less desirable ones.

nelsongf9696 - 2008-09-23 10:10

I don't have to thin out as I only have 3 and one of those is in Puerto Rico.My collection consists of The Sharp GF508 Black edition,JVC RCM70C and JVC RC656 which I keep because the antennas are direct replacement for the RCM70 and are mint. The most I've had at any given time has been 3.Although I love 80 boomboxes I control myself quite well Big Grin
