Kaboom: last chance to see?

isolator42 - 2009-01-13 06:29

In answering another post I had trouble locating any new Kabooms for sale any more.
I can't see any info on the Kabooms on jvc.com anymore either.

Is that it for the Kaboom?

transwave5000 - 2009-01-13 09:55

Im not that familliar with Kabooms
but a local department store has 3 or 4
of them, maybe cd only.

Someone else is selling one over here too.

isolator42 - 2009-01-15 09:44

So long as they're not being phased out yet - without a replacement.
Maybe a retro-looking one? with tweeters?

...we can but dream Smile

baby.boomer - 2009-01-15 10:33

JVC seems to phase them out for a while and then bring them back (with changes). I just picked up an RV-NB10 at a local Meijer store, but it was the last one. The Kaboom may well be out of production again, but, as before, it could come back. And, like Transwave and I have discovered, some stores still seem to have a few unsold ones on hand. But, how to find those stores...?

redbenjoe - 2009-01-15 11:18

any guesses as to the great success of these ??

my old wild guess is that the kabooms were , by far, the most popular boxes ever made --

as for JVC --how about 10 times the sales of their famous M70 ???

so --lets just assume that JVC is on a short re-design time-out.
and then -- its .........

kabooms forever Big Grin

isolator42 - 2009-01-15 14:48

If this is the case, lets hope someone at JVC has an idea of how lucrative the retro market is & does an old skool case design...

vladi123456 - 2009-01-15 18:10

Ya, I'm surprised nobody followed Lasonic with retro-design. They could call it an Ipod dock or something - and sell a bunch

The more upscale department stores might have them.
eg. not Walmart.

i think the success of the kaboom is much higher than that even. its pretty much the only solution for a busker under three hundred bucks thats halfway good.
so yeah they are still on the website i checked.
with the slogan back by popular demand under the web page banner.
there also seems to more kboom models than i have seen in past years being offered.
i think jvc tho overall is in a bit of trouble with thier line as it is. i think the kaboom is one of the few winners they still have.

Actually, I didn't "just" pick one up. Turns out this photo (from the "What car do you drive?" thread) is from May of last year. (Time flies when you're having fun.) Clearance price: $149.00.

Anyone see a Kaboom in a store recently?

(Pay no attention to the Teletubby between the front seats!)

They are all about the same price.... how can I tell which one is better? Laugh Out Loud

redbenjoe - 2009-01-19 07:28

spud --they are identical --sound/power wise--
but the older versions like NB10 thats in the BB chariot -- has a tape deck --the newer ones dont.

baby.boomer - 2009-01-19 08:26

Funny that JVC shows all three versions together, as if they came out at the same time (and are still out). They didn't (and they aren't). They were released in the order shown: NB1, NB10, NB20. I haven't looked at the power outputs, so I'll take red-ben-jammin's word that they're all about the same.

The other thing I know is that the NB1 came in grey (like the original), while the 10 and 20 came in black or white. And the 20 doesn't have a cassette deck.

When I want to know if an item really exists in the real world, I go to Amazon. Amazon shows no Kaboom currently in stock. That to me says they're all out of production right now. It'll be interesting to see what JVC does next (if anything).

In the meantime, if anyone reading this finds any Kaboom lying around, collecting dust on some store shelf, new-in-the-box (or even an open demo), give a holler, OK?

71spud - 2009-01-19 08:28

I wonder if Circuit City is closing any Kabooms out now that they are closing all their stores...

Might be worth checking it out...

Yeah. Might be worth a trip to the local CC... especially if they're actually clearing out their back rooms down to the bare walls.

71spud - 2009-01-19 09:29

CC.com is shut down, but a Google cache search shows that they did cary them... I will take a trip to CC tomorrow and see... it is about a 90 min round trip.

its actually a clean looking design --and they might even sound ok -

but , of course, NONE of us cool, elite, advanced, hoy-poloy, hot sh1t collector types will ever find out Big Grin

isolator42 - 2009-01-19 15:12

didn't someone buy one of those Cobys & find that one of the woofers in the end was false? Or was that another copycat Kaboom?

About power:
all the full size kabooms had the same power output, from the first RV-B90 through to the iPod reissue RV-NB20:
2 x 5W (full range L & R) plus 2 x 15W (superwoofers).
The RV-DP100 & 200 (drumpad Kabooms) had 2 x 5W plus 2 x 16W
All these figs are "proper" power output (@ 10% thd), not max or PMPO, & they're from the JVC manuals.
By way of comparision, measured the same way a JVC M70 has 2 x 7W ouput

baby.boomer - 2009-01-19 17:45

Thanks, Isolator, for the facts on power output. Actually, I'm glad to hear they're all the same. That should mean they're all about equal in value (unless the lack of a cassette deck on the NB20 changes things).

Just got back from Circuit City to see if any old stuff might be out, and the answer is a resounding "No!" In fact, walking through the store made me realize why I haven't been near one in at least five years. Boring, boredom, bored. The closet under my basement stairs has more interesting stuff than they do. Going there also helped me realize why they're going out of business... but not why they waited this long to do it.

Nothing old brought out from the back room (not sure there even IS a back room), nothing new and exciting, and nothing worth buying at the crummy 10% off they're giving on most stuff right now. Man, if this is what they've got in stock during the early days of their liquidation, I hate to think what the place will look like during those last, 50%, 60%, 70% days. There will probably be tumbleweeds drifting through aisles of the portable audio department! Bleak!

Thinking of checking out Circuit City for some last-minute bargains? Forget it. Stay home and browse on eBay. Or take a nap. It'll be more fun.

baby.boomer - 2009-01-19 17:52

My LTD Kaboom and a small, look-alike friend. Yes, there are worse imitators than Coby!

isolator42 - 2009-01-20 06:29

ah, it's you that has the tiny Kaboom Smile
Never found one anywhere...

Looks like I've got a bit lucky in the Kaboom department.
Here I posted about a friends RV-DP200 that needed repair. I've got it to work with AC again, but the CD player won't work. That's all it was used for, so it's previous owner has said I can keep it Smile

One day soon I'll have another crack at that CD player...

those ones get sold in germany under the brand AEG, they just look on the pics like a kaboom, but in reality they're much smaller and sound like crap !
