Blaster Ammo! A Mixtape exchange...

jt - 2009-04-05 06:24

Ok, you know you wanna have something good to vibe out with on your blaster! And you probably have already heard YOUR favorite songs and tracks over and over again. You may even be getting a bit anxious just to hear something else for a change, eh?

Here's what I'm thinking... How about some mixtape exchanges? I would love to swap tapes with some of you, so here is what I propose...

Anyone who sends me a decent quality mixtape, will get one in return. Send two, you will get two... But there are some minor stipulations.

Not to be too picky, but I would prefer to do this with decent quality tapes. Something along the lines of a TDK SA or a Maxell XLII, Denon HD series, etc... Simply because those are generally reliable tapes for good sound and they have good case designs and the older ones are still awesome. I'm not talking about top-shelf metals tapes here.. (but if anyone wants to trade some of those, I can accomodate that, too). Again, it does not have to be a new tape, maybe just record over an old one you have laying around that you don't care so much about anymore. If you don't have any tapes, buy and handful of somebody's used ones off of ebay or hit some second-hand shops. I can tell you that the inexpensive Fuji DRII tapes available on eBay are very, very good sounding tapes. The point is, I would prefer not to spend postage money sending TDK D's or Maxell UR's back and forth.

Also, the music can be whatever you wish to present, but it has to be meaningful to you. Either a compilation of your favorite songs, or a representative of what you like to DJ. Either is fine with me. I just ask that you put some time and effort into making sure the recording levels are good and the tape is not distorted. And if you only have your blaster to record on, but feel it does a good job... you're more than welcome.

What you will get from me in return is a C-90 or C-100, equivalent in quality to what you are sending me. My recording will be made on a Nakamichi 582 or Denon DRM-700, both of which make fine recordings. My levels will be sent pretty strong and the sound will be clean. I will not send out any distorted tapes. You have your choice of a "big room" club-style DJ mix of seamlessly mixed house music, or a compilation of some of my favorite downtempo (ambient, chill) tunes.

So, who's in???

LOL! Yea.... isnt that the truth! We've probably swapped several juke-boxes worth of music so far! Smile

thafuzz - 2009-04-06 08:32

I'd love to hear some of your mixes JT, but my downloaded mixes are on my iPod. I've been trying to get new mixes on tape. I have several brand new, sealed blank Maxell IIs, TDKs ans SONYs(High Bias)I'd like to fill with mixes Frown

ford93 - 2009-04-06 08:41

Fuzz it's ok if you want PM me your address and I'll send you a mixed Tape of House music.

No exchange needed just for you, I've got one sealed Maxell that I don't mind sending out to a member here.

Peace,
Juan.

Thanks a bunch Juan. Will do Wink

jt - 2009-04-07 12:17

Right on... You'll like Juan's tape. He has great taste in music.

Not that I wouldn't mind sending out tapes to those of you who ask, its just that I am also interested in hearing what you guys enjoy! Sharing music works both ways...

That's why I'm wanting to trade tapes... And if someone out there has blasters, but not a lot of tapes to listen to, wants a tape from me anyway, let me know. I'd also appreciate a homeburned CD compilation of their favorites.

I have plenty of tapes I can use. And I guess, even though this is a boombox/walkman forum, not everyone will necessarily be set up to do tape recordings easily...

jt - 2009-05-07 12:16

All the tapes for James, Glucifer, Driptip & ThaFuzz have been shipped out...

Enjoy guys! Looking forward to hearing some of your tunes as well!

cantbearsed - 2009-05-07 12:42

whollybastard - 2009-05-07 13:54

I'd be interested in this. Shipping's a bit extra to/from Sweden of course. But I used to Dj and generally love to compile sets for other people and discover new favourites. Got a lot Basf Type II and some old TDK tapes that have nice design to them if anyone's interessed.

jameswp67 - 2009-05-08 01:01

kballenger53 - 2009-05-19 13:44

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A BET TO ME JT. I'M AN OLD SKOOL DJ FROM THE BOOGIE DOWN BRONX, NYC!!! BEEN SPINNIN' SINCE '76. AND I STILL HAVE TWO MILK CRATES FULL OF ORIGINAL STUFF THAT I'VE MADE, ALONG WITH SOME VINTAGE TAPES THAT I'VE RECORDED FROM DISCO 92 WKTU, WBLS & 98.7 KISS FM MASTERMIXES FEATURING DJ'S SHEP PETTIBONE, AND TONY HUMPHRIES!!!

I DON'T THROW AWAY NOTHIN'!!! THE ONLY PROBLEM THAT I'VE EVER HAD WAS LOANING OUT TAPES TO PEOPLE, AND NEVER HAVE THEM RETURNED!!! BUT, I STILL HAVE ENOUGH IN MY ARSENAL TO MAKE ME A WORTHY CONTENDER!!!

HIT ME UP WITH A PM, SO WE CAN TALK FURTHER!!!

ford93 - 2009-05-19 21:51

Wow KBallenger53 you still have Mastermixes of 92 WKTU that would nice to hear!

I would break night every Saturday just to record 92 WKTU Mastermixes. I was a crazed young teen for the love of music back then.

I hope my buddy JT reads this and hope you could send a copy.

I regret Frown throwing out a set of tapes that New York famous DJ Junior Vasquez made for me. He recorded them when he used to spin at the original Sound Factory. I gave him ten tapes which covered the whole night.

kballenger53 - 2009-05-20 08:33

FORD93, YOU'VE GOT ME FEELIN' LIKE FRED SANFORD NOW: "OH THIS IS THE BIG ONE!!! YOU HEAR THAT ELIZABETH, I'M COMING TO JOIN YOU HONEY, LOOKING THROUGH SOMEBODY'S GARBAGE CAN"!!!

FORD, JUST IMAGINE TRANSFERRING THOSE TAPES TO CD'S??? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

IF YOUR BOY JT WANTS ME TO HOOK HIM UP, I WOULDN'T MIND MAKING A COPY OF IT, AND SENDING IT TO HIM. I'LL EVEN TRANSFER IT ONTO A CD FOR BOTH OF YOU GUYS IF YOU'D LIKE!!!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I RECORDED IT ON ONE OF THOSE COMPACT CASSETTES THAT YOU USED TO BUY AT WOOLWORTH, THAT WERE 3 FOR A DOLLAR!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THEY WERE 90 MINUTE TAPES, AND THE SOUND QUALITY ISN'T BAD EITHER.

EVERY NOW AND THEN I'LL PLAY IT, AND TAKE A TRIP BACK INTO YESTERYEAR WHILE HEARING PACO'S VOICE ANNOUNCE "KEEP YOUR BODY WORKIN'" BY KLEER!!! I RECORDED IT BACK IN '79, DURING MY FIRST YEAR IN THE NAVY!!!

ford93 - 2009-05-21 06:59

Yeah KBallenger53 it too breaks my heart for getting rid of those tapes it was by accident. I was in the process of moving to Miami Florida and alot was in my mine at the moment!

Believe me I know Junior would be pissed off at me if he knew. I hope one day I'll meet him again.

Did you ever record from WNYU in the early 90's?

They used to jam all the unreleased House, Tech House, Techno, Progressive House etc....

I used to love that station they would even send out recordings of their sessions to callers.

jt - 2009-05-21 07:20

Thanks for the phone call and heads-up, Juan!

PM has been sent to you, KB53!

Looking forward to it!

I've received some good stuff so far!

jt - 2009-05-27 08:26

Okay.... 19 mixtapes, 10 packages and $39.47 worth of postage later and I've finally completed my magnetic obligations! I've got tapes going to Sweden, New Zealand, Hungary, the UK, and all over the US.

Between this site and www.tapeheads.net I ended up with a hellova response. This past three weeks I've been crankin' out tapes like mad!

So, if you were expecting a tape or two from me, check your mail soon.

I've already received some of the exchanges and have had some great stuff to listen to! Thanks to all of you who participated!!!

kballenger53 - 2009-05-27 11:06

JT, don't worry man, I've got 2 people ahead of you. One of them being The Man Himself: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND FIRST LADY MICHELLE.

I had wrote them a letter telling them how much I appreciate the good work that they are doing, and enclosed a Mixed CD with it. It has some Old Skool R&B, along with some Gospel, and Jazz!!!

Since he's such a Cool Brother, it took me a long time to come up with some Cool Music for him to listen to. I'm sure he'll like it.

I got one sister who lives close by who wants to pay me to make a House CD for her. $$$ You know what I'm saying???

But what I've got for you and Ford93 is a DISCO 92 WKTU mixed tape, featuring DJ PACO from 1979, and a 98.7 KISS MASTERMIX tape from 1982, featuring DJ SHEP PETTIBONE. Along with one of my 90 Minute Master Mixes. I'm known as DJ KB CHILL!!!

When you receive it, dub a copy for Ford93. I shall not be long!!!

Right On!!!

See!!!! This is why I do these things!!!!

As Danny Tenaglia would say "Music is the answer, to your problems!"

I'll be looking out for that tape, Kevin! Enjoy the tapes coming your way! I'm really looking forward to the Shep Pettibone tape! And I'm curious to hear what was killing the airwaves in 1979. Should be some great blaster ammo for sure!

Later,

JT

kballenger53 - 2009-05-27 12:29

Now I must warn you that the WKTU tape is a bit faded after all these years. It was recorded on those Compact Cassettes that used to come 3 for a Dollar at Woolworth's.

But believe it or not, the Sound Quality really isn't that bad!!! When I transfer it onto High Bias Tape, it should improve it a bit!!!

It's also a 90 minute tape. Unfortunately the Shep Pettibone Mix from '82 is only a 60, but it's got a lot of Classics on it.

My tape is a 90 minute House Mix from 1997. It's some of my best work when I was still playing at Clubs!!!

Cool! Send 'em!

I've got hours over hours of live sets of me playing records at the Lobby in St.Pete. I used to bring my little portable MD recorder in and record 3 1/2 hours at a time of me and the guest playing records. There are some I haven't even listened to yet. I'll never delete them... The recordings on the MD's sound pretty good, but they are not recorded at the MD's highest quality setting. To get the duration out of them, I was recording them at the lowest quality stereo setting.

However, the mixes I've been sending out for trades lately were mastered here at home and originally recorded onto a HiFi VHS, which is IMHO the best possible recording tool I have here in the house (despite my reel to reel or CD-recorder). The specs on this VHS recorder are phenomenal! Think of analog warmth, but at CD-recorder type dynamic range and harmonic distortion levels. There is virtually no tape hiss! The recordings are really, really clean, rich and detailed. And when the signal gets a bit hot ('cause DJs do tend to get carried away with volume levels) the VHS doesn't clip like the CD recorder does.

So... I play back the original VHS masters through my mixer/preamp and record onto tape via my two Nakamichi tape decks. I can do two tapes at once and both sound good.

KB, I believe I sent you two vintage 1995 version Maxell XLII tapes, each with one of these VHS mastered mixes on them. One tape is newer MP3s, but oldschool turntable mixed via the Rane Serato SL1 interface. The other tape should be all turntable mixed tracks that I have on vinyl, ranging from 1996 to 2006 and count as some of my favorites. I did both mixes in one pass (no "rehearsal") and I don't do any scratching or turntable tricks. The mixes are anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes long... As such, some are a bit obvious, but others sneak up on you. I try to make it all about seamless blending and layering. It's not an "in your face" dj style at all. Its more like turning the pages of a book while you're reading. If that makes any sense at all....

Anyway, enjoy!!!

I've got to say that I'm really pleased with the range of music I've gotten from some of you. I got a great set of tracks from Ewen, a nice "retro disko" collection from Hugo and am listening to a tape from Gluecifer in Australia right now!

The internet is a fabulous thing and the ultimate enabler for like-minded people such as us to get in touch and do these kinds of things. The world has gotten really small, hasn't it???

Later!

jt - 2009-06-15 13:52

Any other takers?

I'm still waiting on a couple of tapes from some folks, so I've got more coming... but I'm always down with mixtape trades.

Consider this an open ended thread/offer!
